Teaching DevelopmentSince taking on leadership of teaching development, Professor John Alford has, with othercore faculty, pursued a dual-pronged approach to building the School’s academic capacity.One aspect is recruiting new faculty to longterm,part-time or visiting positions. A majorappointment at the start of 2012 was that ofProfessor Michael Mintrom, who has also takenon the role of Academic Director of the ExecutiveMaster of Public Administration (EMPA). Visitingprofessors this year have included Professor JeanHartley, Warwick University in the UK; ProfessorGerhard Hammerschmid, Hertie School in Berlin;and Professor Beryl Radin, Georgetown University,Washington DC.The other aim has been to further develop theteaching capacities of existing faculty. As previously,ANZSOG supported two national teachingworkshops early in 2012 for core and adjunct facultyacross Australia and New Zealand. Led by ProfessorJonathan Brock from the University of Washington,the two workshops were:• a three-day case teaching workshop sponsoredby ANZSOG and the School of Government atVictoria University of Wellington, in Wellington inFebruary 2012• a two-day master class on interactive teaching,sponsored by ANZSOG in Melbourne in February2012.Professor John Alford also runs local workshopsfocusing on interactive teaching for academicstaff in affiliated universities: Flinders University,University of New South Wales, Victoria Universityof Wellington, Monash University, The University ofSydney, Griffith University, University of Canberraand Curtin University. Already these events havesparked teaching innovations, as well as building acommunity of practice.The year aheadIn addition to offering more local teachingdevelopment events, in 2013 there will be furthernational workshops led by Professor Brock focusingon:• involving more practitioners in interactive teaching• developing a repertoire to meet the needs of therevised ANZSOG curriculum emerging from theEMPA Review.ANZSOG will continue to host visiting internationalacademics throughout 2013.22
