MATHMOD VIENNA 2012
7th Vienna International Conference on Mathematical Modelling
February 15 – 17, 2012, Vienna University of Technology
CONFERENCE PROGRAMME
Dear MATHMOD 2012 Participants,
Welcome at MATHMOD 2012. We are glad, that more than 400 participants chose
MATHMOD 2012 to present and discuss developments and trends in mathematical
modelling. MATHMOD 2012 offers two novelties. First, we have increased the number
of plenary lectures, in order to allow a better discussion between the very different
disciplines and areas of mathematical modelling. And secondly, we have changed
the publication strategy: MATHMOD 2012 Proceedings will be published at IFAC-
PapersOnLine.net, due to better availability and citation; MATHMOD 2012 Preprints
will be available at the conference. We thank all authors, and all organisers of the
very successful MATHMOD Minisymposia for their effort and co-operation.
Conferences have two souls, a scientific soul and a social soul – both are needed for
success; so we have provided a hopefully attractive Social Programme. We wish you
a fruitful MATHMOD 2012 and a pleasant stay in Vienna.
Inge Troch, Felix Breitenecker
MATHMOD Scope – Topics - IPC
The scope of MATHMOD 2012 covers theoretic and applied aspects of the various types of
mathematical modelling (equations of various types, automata, Petri nets, bond graphs, qualitative
and fuzzy models, etc.) for systems of dynamic nature (deterministic, stochastic, continuous,
discrete or hybrid with respect to time, etc.). Comparison of modelling approaches,
model simplification, modelling uncertainties, port-based modelling, and the impact of items
such as these on problem solution, numerical techniques, validation, automation of modelling
and software support for modelling, co-simulation, etc. will be discussed in special sessions as
well as applications of modelling in control, design or analysis of systems in engineering and
other fields of application. The topics to be discussed will include e.g.
• modelling theory , fractional calculus
• processes/ methods for modelling, identification, development, reduction, validation
• automation of modelling and software aids for modelling
• qualitative modelling including fuzzy and iterative approaches to modelling
• modular modelling and interdisciplinary modelling
• learning networks / uncertainties in modelling
• relationship between the modelling approach and problem solutions
• comparison of methods for modelling, model reduction and model validation
• effects of modelling errors on overall performance of an engineering system
• applications in the field of engineering systems and in natural sciences
• applications in environmental systems, biotechnology, etc.
• applications in operation research, logistics and planning
• applications in medicine, physiology, health care and health technology assessment
• recent developments like cyberphysical modelling
• modelling aspects in scientific computing

Conference Publications
MATHMOD 2012 comes with a new publication strategy. The need of Proceedings which are
listed in scientific citation systems caused us to change from electronic CD-Proceedings with
ISBN, but without DOI and without science citation index listing, towards electronic web
publication on a renowned publication server with citation features. As MATHMOD conference
series is an IFAC - sponsored conference series, the choice for web publication for the
Proceedings was IFAC-PapersOnLine.net, the web publication server of IFAC, the International
Federation of Automatic Control. All papers published on IFAC-PapersOnLine.net can
be cited using the site ISSN, the event ISBN, and the individual paper DOI (Digital Object
Identifier), and furthermore publications will be indexed in SCOPUS, etc. IFAC-
PapersOnLine.net, developed as a partnership between IFAC and Elsevier, the IFAC Publisher,
is Open Access in nature – no charge to individual for reading or downloading, up to a
limit of 25 papers per calendar month.
Nevertheless, at MATHMOD 2012 preprints will be available. MATHMOD participants have
provided Preprint Abstracts of their contributions for the printed MATHMOD 2012 Abstracts
Preprint Volume and Preprint Full Contributions for the electronic MATHMOD
2012 Full Contributions Preprint Volume (USB Stick). The full preprint contributions will
undergo a full-paper review for inclusion into MATHMOD 2012 Proceedings at the IFAC
publication server IFAC-PapersOnLine.net.
The Preprint Volumes, published as ARGESIM Report no. S38, compile the preprint abstracts
and the preprint full contributions to MATHMOD 2012. Four contribution types have
been provided. The classical contribution types are MATHMOD Contribution and MATH-
MOD Minisymposium Contribution, accepted by general peer review based on an extended
review abstracts, or by review of the minisymposium organisers. MATHMOD 2012 also continues
with a novelty introduced in MATHMOD 2009 – the type MATHMOD Work-in-
Progress Contribution. Contributions of this type are intended for presentation of recent developments
and work in progress in all areas of modelling and simulation. And last but not
least, MATHMOD Student Contributions give e.g. PhD Students a chance to present themselves
their own work.
In summary, the MATHMOD 2012 publications are:
• MATHMOD 2012 Abstracts Preprint Volume
Troch, F. Breitenecker, eds.; ARGESIM Report no. S38; printed
• MATHMOD 2012 Full Contributions Preprint Volume
Troch, F. Breitenecker, eds.; ARGESIM Report no. S38; electronically at USB stick
• MATHMOD 2012 Proceedings at IFAC-PapersOnLine.net
Troch, F. Breitenecker, eds.; web proceedings; ISBN to be announced;
each contribution with DOI and indexing
Copyright Regulations
Only contributions not published and not being considered for publication elsewhere were
allowed to be submitted to MATHMOD 2012, with electronic Full Preprint publication and
printed Abstract Preprint publication, and with Proceedings publication at IFAC publication
web server IFAC-PapersOnLine.net (based on peer review of full preprint contributions).
All contributions accepted by the preconference review based on extended review abstracts or
by special review of the minisymposia are published in Preprint Volumes (printed abstracts,
and USB stick with full contributions, published in series ARGESIM Reports), available at
begin of MATHMOD 2012. Any full preprint contribution is automatically reviewed for proceedings
publication at IFAC-PapersOnLine.net (full paper review). Copyright for accepted
contributions is transferred to IFAC (for details, see IFAC-PapersOnLine.net). For Proceedings,
as well as for Preprints, the IFC copyright regulations are valid.

MATHMOD 2012 Scientific Programme
The MATHMOD 2012 Scientific Programme consists of Invited Plenary Lectures, MATH-
MOD Contribution Sessions, MATHMOD Minisymposia, MATHMOD Work-in-Progress
Poster Session, MATHMOD Student Contribution Poster Session, and Tutorials. This programme
is a final one, but changes might be unavoidable. Changes will be announced at the
conference office, and regularly updated in the schedule at MATHMOD webpage.
MATHMOD 2012 Plenary Lectures / Invited Contributions
At previous MATHMOD conferences it turned out, that participants prefer a bigger number
of invited lectures, with impact on overview and state-of-the-art in modelling and simulation.
MATHMOD 2012 follows this idea by twelve invited lectures. These lectures cover a broad
area of mathematical modelling and simulation. Scientists from abroad and from TU Vienna
give an overview about state-of-the-art and recent developments in modelling and simulation
(for date and time, see detailed MATHMOD 2012 Schedule in this Programme):
• Optimal Control of Dynamical Systems Governed by Partial Differential Equations
A Perspective from Real-Life Applications; Hans Josef Pesch, Univ. of Bayreuth, Germany
• Utilization of Buildings: Understand, Model, Simulate! The MoreSpace Project at TU Vienna
Dietmar Wiegand, Vienna Univ. of Technology, Austria
• Structure Preserving Model Order Reduction of Linear Time-Invariant Control Systems
Peter C. Müller, Univ. of Wuppertal, Germany
• Modelling Prehistoric Mining; Kerstin Kowarik, Hans Reschreiter, Natural History Museum
Opportunities; Agostino Bruzzone, Univ. of Genoa, Italy
• Recognition and Classification of Human Motion Patterns;
Arnold Baca, Univ. of Vienna, Austria
MATHMOD 2012 Contribution Sessions
The ‘classical’ MATHMOD contributions are arranged in sessions according to their main
thematic point. Such a grouping is by no means easy because many contributions address several
different aspects in a balanced manner, and the contributions show very strong interdisciplinarity.
So it was decided to have a first group with contributions on methods and theory,
a second group dealing with identification in theory and application, followed by comprehensive
application groups. Each group has been split in two to four sessions:
• Modelling Methods, Theory & Tools • Biology, Physiology & Medicine
• Identification, Estimation, & Calibration • Discrete Systems and Manufacturing
• Mechatronics & Electrical Engineering • Process Engineering
• Control Systems

MATHMOD 2012 Minisymposia
MATHMOD Minisymposia are devoted to a specific field within the scope of the conference.
Specialist in such specific fields have been offered the opportunity to compile a minisymposium
with 5 - 15 contributions, selecting themselves authors and taking care for a proper review.
Suggestions for minisymposia have been carefully reviewed by the conference organisers.
For proceedings publication, full contribution preprints undergo a full paper peer review.
At MATHMOD 2012 24 minisymposia are organised:
• Bond Graph Modeling: Theory and Practice
Dean Karnopp, Donald L. Margolis (Univ. California, USA)
• Classical and Quantum Circuits
Wolfgang Mathis, Peter Russer (Univ. Hannover / Technical Univ. Munich, Germany)
• Cognitive Technical Systems: Modeling and Simulation
Dirk Soeffker (University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany)
• Computational Micromagnetics; D. Praetorius, G. Hrkac, T. Schrefl, Dieter Suess (Vienna
Univ. of Technology / Univ. of Sheffield, UK / Univ. Applied Sciences, St. Pölten, Austria)
• Control and Optimization in Mechatronics
MATHMOD 2012 Work-in-Progress Contributions
MATHMOD 2012 also continues with a novelty introduced in MATHMOD 2009 – the type
MATHMOD Work-in-Progress Contribution. Contributions of this type are intended for presentation
of recent developments and work in progress in all areas of modelling and simulation.
For this type of contributions, same publication possibilities are offered as with MATH-
MOD Contributions, but these contributions have a poster presentation in the
MATHMOD Work-in-Progress Contribution Poster Session
Thursday, February 16, 2012, 3.20 pm – 4.20 pm
MATHMOD 2012 Student Contributions
MATHMOD Student Contributions are intended to present results of PhD theses or similar;
the (main) author must be a student. Publication possibilities are same as for MATHMOD
Contributions. These contributions have a poster presentation in the
MATHMOD 2012 Student Contribution Poster Presentation
Thursday, February 16, 2012, 3.20 pm – 4.20 pm
Generally, the posters of Work-in-Progress Contributions and of Student Contributions
should be on display from beginning of MATHMOD 2012 Opening Sessions, Wednesday,
During poster presentation, Thursday, February 15, 2012, 3.20 pm – 4.20 pm, all participants
are invited to walk around in the poster area and to discuss with the authors about their contribution,
and finally to vote for Best Work-in-Progress Contribution Poster and Best Student
Contribution Poster. Criteria for selecting the best poster should not only be content, but also
poster presentation and poster layout, and personal presentation. And clearly, for Student
Posters a different rating scale is appropriate.
In order to make voting easier, the Poster Presentation Session is accompanied by an extended
coffee break with tasting of the MATHMOD 2012 Conference Wine. And in order to
make voting more attractive, also prizes for voters will be drawn. Ballots may be found in the
MATHMOD 2012 Conference Box, and they are available at the conference desk. Please indicate
poster number on the ballot, and do not forget to write your name on the back side of the
ballot paper (in order to take part in the voters’ drawing). During and after Poster Session
ballots will be collected in a ballot box.
The following table gives the prizes for all voting – please note that the first prize is of considerable
Presentation of Contributions – Facilities
MATHMOD 2012 presents different types of contributions – Invited Plenary Contributions,
MATHMOD Contributions, MATHMOD Minisymposium Contributions, MATHMOD Workin-Progress
Contribution, and MATHMOD Student Contributions - with different presentation
modes – oral presentations and poster presentations.
MATHMOD Contributions - Minisymposium Contributions: Oral Presentation
MATHMOD Contributions and Minisymposium Contributions have oral presentations in parallel
sessions. Twenty minutes are reserved for each contribution. Authors have 15 minutes to
perform their ideas and results. Five minutes are reserved for discussion. A data projector and
a notebook with pdf – display facilities are available in every lecture hall. Of course, or even
better, presenters may also use their own notebook, especially, if embedded videos should be
displayed.
Authors are asked to meet with the session chair before beginning of the session in the assigned
lecture hall, and to give him the Authors’ Introduction Sheet (in conference box, and at
registration desk).
Furthermore, we ask presenters, who have submitted a full contribution for Preprints, to fill
out and sign the IFAC Copyright form, if your contributions should be published at IFAC-
PapersOnLine.net after successful full paper review.
In every lecture hall an assistant is present in order to help with data projector, notebook connection,
etc. We strictly ask to keep the presentation schedule; in case of a missing presenter,
a break of twenty minutes should be made!
MATHMOD Work-in-Progress Contribution / Student Contribution: – Poster Presentation
MATHMOD Work-in-Progress Contributions and MATHMOD Student Contributions are presented
with a poster of DIN A0 size, portrait format. We ask authors to prepare posters using
the templates provided (see MATHMOD webpage) and to bring the posters with them to
MATHMOD. Posters should be on display from beginning of MATHMOD 2012 Opening Sessions,
Wednesday, February 15, 2012, 9.00 am until end of MATHMOD 2012 Closing Session,
Friday, February 17, 2012, 3.00 pm.
MATH and ARTS at MATHMOD
The MATHMOD organisers try to design appealing conference
badges, vouchers and leaflets. For this reason it was
decided to use paintings of famous Austrian artists.
MATHMOD 2003 was dedicated to a well known family of
painters, Kasimir, who painted at lot of Vienna’s buildings
round the turn of the century.
MATHMOD 2006 was dedicated to a world-famous Austrian
Painter, one of the most prominent members of Vienna Art
Nouveau (Vienna Secession) movement, Gustav Klimt.
MATHMOD 2009 started with the combination of algorithmic
models and art – algorithmic art pictures as design for
MATHMOD publications and layouts.
MATHMOD 2012 continues the at MATHMOD 2009 established
MATH & ARTS, an idea combining mathematical
modelling and fine arts, continuing and extending essentially
the previous art links:
• presenting lectures on mathematical modelling in fine
arts and ‘non-technical’ sciences,
• designing conference publications, badges and other
conference handouts with printings and paintings
especially created for MATHMOD,
• providing a small unique conference art print
for each participant,
• providing prizes for Best Poster Award,
• creating new layouts for journals e.g. SNE
– Simulation Notes Europe, etc.
MATHMOD - Algorithmic Art
MATHMOD organisers are happy, that Vlatko Ceric - expert
in discrete stochastic modelling and simulation - and expert
and designer in the field of Algorithmic Art - provides his
artwork for MATHMOD. Vlatko Ceric, professor at University
Zagreb, started with algorithmic art in mid-1970th at
early times of computer graphics, and started exhibiting in
2005. Vlatko Ceric participated at exhibitions from New
York City till Perth till Novosibirsk. Algorithmic Art - a
rough definition by V. Ceric:
• an algorithm is a procedure for solving a problem
• a computer program is an algorithm coded in certain
programming language
• algorithmic art is generated by executing specific
algorithms (computer programs)
• no image editing with software (Photoshop) is done
in any stage of image generation
The pictures at right show Vlatko Cerics’s algorithmic art
from different series.
Kasimir: TU Vienna
V. Veric: Compositions
V. Ceric: Nexus
V. Ceric: Ocean

For creating special design and layouts for MATHMOD 2009 conference handouts, Vlatko
Ceric chose the algorithmic art technique of his Nexus series:
... for developing artwork for MATHMOD, I decided to use a technique of square division into
triangles used from early 20th century in abstract geometrically oriented art. I was working
with this technique for the last few years in the Nexus Series, discovering that algorithmic
approach based on mathematical models is able to give fresh and interesting results.
..... the algorithmic approach enabled me to have much more complex definition of how should
a division of a square be made depending on the location of the square compared to traditional
handmade division. This also enables me to use the square division technique as a main visual
key for MATHMOD
The Nexus series became the general basis for MATHMOD logos – the following series
shows variations of the MATHMOD Nexus Logos – at left logo MATHMOD 2009, and at
right logo MATHMOD 2012.
For MATHMAD 2012, Vlatko Ceric has chosen designs from the series Ocean for poster and
art cards, and series Compositions for badges, preprint cover, program cover, vouchers, etc.
About MATHMOD Conference Series
The conference series Vienna International Conference on Mathematical Modelling -
MATHMOD Vienna - takes place every third year at Vienna University of Technology. The
series started in 1994, followed by conferences in 1997, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2009 and in 2012,
respectively.
At MATHMOD Vienna scientists and engineers using or developing models or interested in
the development or application of various modelling tools are offered an opportunity to present
ideas, methods and results and discuss their experiences or problems with experts of
various areas of specialisation. The scope of the MATHMOD conference series covers theoretic
and applied aspects of various types of mathematical modelling. Comparison of modelling
approaches, model simplification, modelling uncertainties, port-based modelling and the
impact of items such as these on problem solution, numerical techniques, validation, automation
of modelling and software support for modelling, co-simulation, etc. are discussed.
MATHMOD conferences 1997 – 2003 were organised under the flag of IMACS (mutual
sponsor and series responsibility), MATHMOD 2006 was organised in the responsibility of
ARGESIM, an ASIM working group at Vienna University of Technology (ASIM - German
Simulation Society). MATHMOD 2009 and MATHMOD 2012 are organised in the responsibility
of ARGESIM/ASIM under the flagship of the EUROSIM Event Series, and for
MATHMOD 2012 IFAC became one of the main sponsors.
MATHMOD 2009, February 10-13, 2009 gathered some 450 scientists from 31 countries,
showing a broad variety of the art of mathematical modelling. Theoretical investigations were
only one aspect, various kinds of applications, but also implementation and design of appropriate
software based on formal or mathematical models were among the main topics discussed
during 420 contributions to the conference.
MATHMOD 2012, February 15 – 17, 2012 comes with a change in publication structure –
from CD Proceedings to Web Proceedings at IFAC-PapersOnLine.net – in order to make publication
more attractive. IFAC is one of MATHMOD’s main co-sponsors and offers IFAC-
PapersOnLine.net as Conference Proceedings server with DOI, citation indexing, etc. and
follows Open Access publication strategy. MATHMOD 2012 counts before begin about 410
participant registrations. More information at → www.mathmod.at.
