Heat pumps40/41Cooling with heat pumpsAlongside pleasant heating convenience and reliable DHW heating, heat pumps alsoprovide cooling for a building.No-one would turn on the central heating ona hot summer day. With a Viessmann heatpump, the situation is different, as sometypes offer an additional cooling function.Active or passive coolingCooling operates according to two differentmethods:• Passive cooling: This is where the brinemedium or the groundwater absorbsthe energy from the heating circuit via aheat exchanger and transfers it outside. This function is also called natural cooling,as it uses the natural ambient temperature.Apart from the control unit andcirculation pump, the heat pump remainsswitched off.Natural cooling – naturallyWhile the ground or groundwater is usedin winter to provide energy for heating, insummer it can be used for natural cooling. With the natural cooling function, the controlunit only starts the primary pump and heatingcircuit pump. This means the relatively hotwater from the underfloor heating systemcan transfer its heat via the heat exchanger tothe brine in the primary circuit. This extractsheat from all rooms that are connected, whichmakes natural cooling a particularly energyefficient and affordable way to cool buildings.• Active cooling: For this, the function of theheat pump is simply reversed. This methodof cooling can be described as "reverseoperation". This means that the refrigerantcircuit is reversed internally or reversal isachieved by an external changeover of theprimary and secondary circuits. As with afridge, cooling is then actively generated bythe heat pump.NC-BoxOptional equipment forViessmann heat pumps toprovide passive coolingPage 42AC-BoxOptional equipment forViessmann heat pumps toprovide active coolingPage 43
