40 Weekly Weather <strong>and</strong> Crop Bulletin October 5, 2010Beneficial rain moved into central <strong>and</strong> southeastern Brazil,likely signaling the beginning of the summer rainy season inthose parts of the country. In Sao Paulo <strong>and</strong> Minas Gerais,heavy rain (25-50 mm, locally exceeding 100 mm) broughtrelief from dryness to sugarcane <strong>and</strong> citrus <strong>and</strong> will triggerflowering of the 2010/11 coffee <strong>crop</strong>. To the north <strong>and</strong> west,the rainfall will spur planting of soybeans <strong>and</strong> other summer<strong>crop</strong>s; this is particularly true in Mato Grosso, Brazil’s largestsoybean producer, which received its first significant rain ofthe season more than a week later than usual. <strong>The</strong> rainfall alsoBRAZILhelped to bring temperatures down to more seasonable levels,with early week highs near 40 degrees C giving way to highsin the lower <strong>and</strong> middle 30s at week’s end. Farther south, dry<strong>weather</strong> returned to Rio Gr<strong>and</strong>e do Sul <strong>and</strong> Santa Catarina,following last week’s inundating rainfall, improving conditionsfor immature winter wheat. Heavier rain (25-50 mm or more)in Parana <strong>and</strong> southern Mato Grosso do Sul increased moisturefor summer <strong>crop</strong>s but was untimely for maturing wheat.
