3. GUIDELINESAnaesthetists PS03 Minimum Facilities for PreanaesthesiaConsultations)The pre-anaesthesia consultation should include:3.1 Identification and introduction of the medical practitioner responsiblefor the anaesthesia to the patient.3.2 Confirmation with the patient of the patient’s identity, procedure (andside where appropriate) and the proceduralist involved.3.3 An appropriate medical assessment of the patient including medicalhistory (which may be assisted by a questionnaire and/or review ofavailable patient notes), clinical examination, review of anymedications, the results of any relevant investigations and arrangementfor any further investigations or therapeutic measures which areconsidered necessary. This medical assessment may lead to delay,postponement or even cancellation of the planned procedure.3.4 Consultation with professional colleagues if required.3.5 A discussion with the patient (and/or guardian) of those details of theanaesthetic management which are of significance to the patient. Thiswould usually include the conduct of the anaesthesia/sedation, painmanagement (see PS45 Statement on Patient’s Rights to PainManagement), the relevant potential complications and risks, andprovide the patient with an opportunity for questions and/or provisionof educational material. This educational material may be in the formof written pamphlets, video recordings or audiotapes but given to thepatient in a timely manner.3.6 Obtaining of informed consent for anaesthesia/sedation and relatedprocedures. This should include consent regarding the type ofanaesthesia, any invasive procedures, pain management and othermedication plan and, where appropriate, informed financial consent(see PS26 Guidelines on Consent for Anaesthesia and Sedation).3.7 The ordering of any medications considered necessary.3.8 Contemporaneous written notes documenting the consultation andinformed consent which should become part of the medical record ofthe patient. (see also ANZCA Code of Professional Conduct, PS6Recommendations on the Recording of an Episode of Anaesthesia Careand also PS 26 Guidelines on Consent for Anaesthesia or Sedation).
