OVERVIEWThe Ultimate GoalAs time has proven, the Moose Legion hasbecome of even greater importance to theoverall operation of the Loyal Order of Moose. We must therefore concentrate even moreeffort toward the wellness of a properfunctioning Moose Legion Committee in eachMoose Lodge of each Moose Legionjurisdiction throughout the Order. As a general rule, Moose Legion Celebrationsare held quarterly. Unless there is someprogram, activity, or social event scheduledspecifically for Moose Legionnaires within thelodge during the periods between MooseLegion Celebrations, the only contact thesemembers have with the structured MooseLegion program is some occasionalcommunications. Therefore, the purpose of the Moose LegionCommittee within the Moose Lodge is topromote and pursue a program of socialactivities and fellowship for MooseLegionnaires, their ladies, and their families. This shall be done within the Moose Lodgeduring that time between Moose LegionCelebrations stimulating membershipawareness and growth for both the MooseLodge and the Moose Legion. The target of the Moose Legion Committee isto strengthen the Moose Lodge and the entirefraternal program while the Moose LegionMission is to have fun while providing greaterservice to the Moose Fraternity.of this committee can only come from theMoose Lodge itself through new membersqualifying for advancement to the 2nd Degreeof our Order. Once the Moose Legion Degreehas been conferred at a Moose LegionCelebration, Moose Legion Committeemembership is automatic.A Moose Legionnaire now has opportunity toseek the fraternal advancements that layahead. By promoting the Moose fraternalprograms and support of the Moose Legion, aMoose Legionnaire will be striving to reach alevel of Moose service that meritsadvancement to the Fellowship Degree ofHonor and the Pilgrim Degree of Merit. An immediate goal is a 10% segment of theMoose Lodge having membership in theMoose Legion. From this achievement, thepercentage should be raised in readilyattainable increments remembering that ourultimate goal is the building of the Loyal Orderof Moose into the strongest Fraternal Order inthe world. We should have a Moose Legion ActivitiesCommittee in every Moose Lodge committedto serving our Fraternity while having fun. Thegreater the amount of enjoyment, the higherthe participation, the more fun the MooseLegionnaires will have. It’s a win-win foreverybody. The Vision of the Moose Legion is topersuade all qualified Moose Lodge membersto join the Moose Legion and do some goodthing for someone each day. acre retirement community campus in OrangePark, Florida. (A little known fact … for manyyears after the founding of Moosehaven, admission was open only to those holding theMoose Legion degree.)Traditional monetary support for Moosehavencontinued and took on an added dimension in1991, when Moose Legionnaires adopted the"Moosehaven Seniors Medical Fund", whereinanother major portion of annual dues isdiverted directly to the Moosehaven budget foroutside medical service of our seniors. Thispermanent project has provided for seniorhealth care at Moosehaven in excess of threemilliondollars.Lodges with active Moose Legion committeesoperate at a higher level in membershipbuilding and retention, profitability, andharmony among its membership. The Moosemember, once elevated to the Moose LegionDegree and with an active committee throughwhich to channel his fraternal desires, exhibitsa strong desire to give of time, talents andleadership ability, thus contributing to Lodgeprogress.Let's consider three known facts: first… ofthose Lodge members who are dropped fornon-payment of dues each year - 9 of every 10are not Moose Legionnaires. Second… ofthose Moose members who achieve Lodgenew members sponsor status each year - 8 ofevery 10 are Moose Legionnaires, and Third…ninety-eight cents of every dollar raised at theLodge level by Moose Legionnaires finds itway back into the Lodge, in the form of a newor remodeled buildings, purchase ofequipment, payment of insurance premiums orsome special project. When we have an activeMoose Legion Committee in our Lodges, wehave individuals who accept projects and getthings done in the Lodge.ranks, and then provide a schedule of activitiesand projects within the Lodge through anactive Moose Legion Committee. This will be accomplished by acquainting theMoose member with the Moose Legion, and byeducating him on the value of Moose Legionmembership, and elevating him to the Degreeof Service. At this point, we will have addedassets to our Lodge by including a memberwho will be more likely to remain a Moosemember … one who will sponsor his friends tomembership and one who will be willing todedicate his efforts through service to theLodge, community and fraternity.A Moose member who elevates hismembership to the Degree of Service does soout of love for and dedication to the fraternity. He places the needs of his Lodge, District,State or Province, and the Fraternity ahead ofhis personal desire for recognition oradvancement… he steps forward, pays his feeand dues, and then proudly announces…"I'mpart of the future, use me to advance the causeof children and seniors!"This "Guide to Success" is intended to providea marked pathway helping MooseLegionnaires follow the provisions of theInternational Moose Legion Code of Rules andthe policy and procedures for the Degree ofService of Moose International. At the sametime, this handbook is meant to offer acomprehensive guide for organizing andoperating a successful Lodge Moose LegionCommittee in each Moose Lodge of theFraternity.Considering the positive effect on our Lodgesby Moose Legionnaires, it is imperative weplace greater emphasis on Moose Legionmembership. We must bring those qualified formembership in the Moose Legion into ourPage 5 of 32 Downloaded from www.MooseIntl.org Posted on site:10/13/2011Moose Legion Committee - GUIDE TO SUCCESS - Page 2

ORIENTATION PROGRAMFOR USE BY LODGE MOOSE LEGION COMMITTEEThis Orientation Program provides substanceand facts regarding the Degree of Service ofour Order and is to be conducted in your Lodgeby Moose Legionnaires. The program isdesigned to assist your Moose Legionnaires ininforming qualified Moose members of themerits and benefits of elevation to the "Degreeof Service" of our Order … the Moose Legion. It can, and should be, designed in a way thatwill be most effective for you and your Lodgemembership. The Moose LegionnaireOrientation Program will acquaint every Moosemember with the opportunities found in hisMoose Legion membership, and support everyeffort to elevate your Moose Brothers to the"Degree of Service".The primary thrust of this Orientation Programis to emphasize the "positive" aspects and thesense of pride a member may achieve in beingof greater service to the Order. It alsohighlights the personal satisfaction a memberrealizes from embarking upon a fraternal pathwhich will enable him to unleash his power todo good and, at the same time, have "fun"along the way.No … you don't have to be a public speaker tomake this Orientation Program effective. Youjust have to possess the "will to do it"! For thisreason, it might be a good idea to have severalinterested Moose Legionnaires take turns inpresenting the program on a regular basis, atleast once monthly. It might be a good idea toenlist Moose Legionnaires in your Lodge whohave held offices in the Moose Legion, eitherpresent or past, and of course, those of thePilgrim and Fellowship degrees. How does it work? First, duplicate and enlargethe posters in the addendum, and then placeon an easel for your presentation. A suggestedscript for each poster is also provided in theaddendum. As you will see, this is a very simple programwhen used on a regular basis by dedicatedMoose Legionnaires who have a strong desireto build our membership. Please understand, this is not an "iron clad", "cast-in-stone"program.Should you have a question, need assistanceto get started, or need help in conducting theMoose Legion Orientation Program in yourLodge, contact your Moose Legion Secretary,Ambassador, Area Manager, or theInternational Moose Legion Office.USEFUL NOTES FOR THE PREPARATIONOF A MOOSE LEGION ORIENTATIONPROGRAM[1] Obtain the eligibility list from the MooseLegion Secretary. This list is a ten-yearsnapshot only. It does not include everypossible candidate for all time. All Moosemembers eligible to advance to the MooseLegion should be contacted and invited tojoin.[2] Approach their original Lodge sponsor[providing he is a Moose Legionnaire inactive status], and if the original sponsorsare not interested, use your MembershipCommittee to begin contacting theseMoose members about 'elevation' to theMoose Legion.[3] Schedule a Moose Legion orientationprogram with your Lodge Governor'sapproval. It is vital we ensure those whoconduct the Orientation Program arecurrently knowledgeable in the MooseLegion.Page 14 of 32 Downloaded from www.MooseIntl.org Posted on site:10/13/2011Page 11 - GUIDE TO SUCCESS - Moose Legion Committee

[4] Ensure that advance publicity is given inyour Lodge bulletin, website and on theLodge and Moose Legion bulletin boardand during the Lodge Officer andMembership meetings."Preferred Members", officers and committeechairman may very well turn out to be the mostenthusiastic potential candidates for MooseLegion membership. We must not overlooktheir power to enlist the interest of otherpotential candidates for membership. You may wish to arrange snacks andbeverages, or provide a dinner or light buffet, either before or after the Orientation Program. You may wish to ask the potential candidatesfor help in setting up the Orientation room. Nomoving mountains, but something really simplelike setting out tables, chairs or snacks; pullingdrapes; making up name tags; arrangingliterature or greeting those attending. This isan ideal and painless way to develop a senseof involvement, along with a personal feelingof making a difference, for which the MooseLegion is famous.all the cooking. This would show that MooseLegionnaires are caring and create the sametype flavor we find within some of the otherunits of our Order. This can be developed intoa "fun" evening, and there is no reason whyladies should be excluded from the evening'sactivities, including the Orientation Program.Produce an activity or event very soon after theOrientation. Perhaps a dinner or sports event,or a picnic with all the candidates, theirsponsors and family members. This willmaintain a high level of interest prior toconferral. Candidates must attend a scheduledMoose Legion conferral before they cancomplete their Moose Legion membership.Sometimes the problem of waiting monthsbetween signing of the Application forMembership and conferral is alleviated whenthe Lodge Moose Legion Committee hosts amini-celebration to confer their own MooseLegionnaires. These mini-celebrations requireproper authorization from the Moose LegionPresident / Board of Directors. For furtherinformation on mini-celebrations, contact yourMoose Legion President or Secretary. We recommend the use of personal invitationletters in order to keep the interest among thesponsors and candidates alike. We haveincluded suggested text in the addendum. Ifyour Lodge has a computer, you can use themail merge capability to accomplish this task.At some point, you will want to "show off" thevarious Lodge projects made possible by theLodge Moose Legion Committees such as the"picnic pavilion", "bar-b-q pits", "children'splayground equipment", "kitchen equipment","smoke eaters", "tables and chairs", "bigscreen TV", "flagpole", etc. This allows thepotential Moose Legionnaire to actually seewhat can be accomplished when "dedicated"members work for a common cause. Finally, you may wish to transform the activityinto a potluck dinner, or something similar, towhich ladies may be included. It would be agood idea to have the Moose Legionnaires doWell-planned and organized meetings are aterrific tool to enable Moose Legionnaires tohave input into the functions of the committee. This is where we discuss problems andsolutions, examine and evaluate projects orprogram progress and consider new ideas andevents. The "FUNCTION" of the Lodge Moose LegionCommittee shall be to provide service andleadership to the Lodge, its officers andmembers. Plus it will encourage all MooseLegionnaires to become active in the affairs ofthe Lodge and provide a wholesome socialatmosphere for the Moose Legionnaire and hisfamily. The "GOALS" of the Lodge Moose LegionCommittee shall be the strengthening of ouroverall Moose fraternity and its programs—Torespond to any type of call from the LodgeBoard of Officers —To stimulate membershipPage 15 of 32 Downloaded from www.MooseIntl.org Posted on site:10/13/2011Moose Legion Committee - GUIDE TO SUCCESS - Page 12

growth in both the Lodge and Moose Legion—To provide superior leadership at the Lodgelevel —and promote harmony within all units ofthe Order.Point to remember … as the Lodge "MooseLegion Orientation" meeting is the first "handson" experience a prospective MooseLegionnaire will encounter with the "Degree ofService" … keep it simple, informative, easy, and mostly … fun!REFERENCES, HANDOUTS ANDMATERIALS AVAILABLE(From Moose International)1. Moose Legion Application Brochure forMembership2. PLANNING AN EVENTWHAT DO WE DO NEXT?It never fails. The moment your get a bunch ofMoose Legionnaires together and come upwith a workable idea for an activity, an event oran ongoing program, before you know it, it's inmotion and headed toward completion. Noticethat the key word is "workable". That's one ofthe most important functions of the LodgeMoose Legion Committee meeting; to come upwith workable ideas for Lodge level activitiesand to involve both the Moose Legionnaire andhis entire family.Moose Legionnaires everywhere have becomeexperts at generating an extensive array ofactivities, all designed to:[a] Bring Moose Legionnaires and theirfamilies together in activities catering to allage groups;[b] Attract the greatest number of people andthus create more publicity for the MooseLegion, all of which helps to swell theMoose Legion ranks;[c] Produce income for the host of causes towhich Moose Legionnaires have pledgedtheir support. The Moose Legion can use its talents toencourage and support the family concept thatwe see is working not only to expand ournumbers, but to deepen everyone in theappreciation of fraternal values. Have youever seen happier people than the crews ofMoose Legionnaires and their ladies engagedin making an event work? So, how do Moose Legionnaires and ladies ofthe Lodge Moose Legion Committee plan a"knock-down, drag-out' event that will cover theLodge quarterly taxes?A. Establish a stated goal, and let everyoneknow about it. "This event is going to raisea thousand dollars for our Lodge GeneralFund" or "This event is going to raise twohundred dollars to help pay for the new toolshed" or "This event is going to raise fivehundred dollars for Camp Ross, and beatout every other Lodge Moose LegionCommittee in the State/Province". See howthe fun starts?B. Determine exactly what the event shallbe, based upon such considerations as:How popular will the event be? An outdoorpicnic, for example, can be set up to appealto all age groups. Also, you want toconsider what else is scheduled to takeplace in your community on the same dayas your event. On the other hand, amotorcycle poker run will admittedly attracta group of people with a narrow band ofinterest, but bikers, as we all know, areintense, and you might end up with 10,000of 'em, even in a snowstorm.C. Determine the exact date so you canavoid conflict with major District, Stateor Regional Moose events andcommunity activities. Your localChambers of Commerce issue eventscalendars at the beginning of the year; getas many as you can from the surroundingcommunities as well; so do many of thecommunity service clubs, local colleges;and of course your local newspapers. TheMoose Association should have a scheduleof their planned events, which will includethe District meetings, Leadership sessions,Supreme Governor visitations, etc. This determination has another vital aspect. What will be happening before or after at yourPage 17 of 32 Downloaded from www.MooseIntl.org Posted on site:10/13/2011Moose Legion Committee - GUIDE TO SUCCESS - Page 14

Lodge? At the District? At the Moose Legion orAssociation level? International Moose LegionConference? Moose International Convention,Association Mid-Year Conference or annualconvention? Will the Chapter members be offto a Women of the Moose function? What does the Family Activities Committeehave planned? This type of knowledge is worthits weight in gold, believe it!D. Obtain Approval because the LodgeMoose Legion Committee is a standingcommittee of the Lodge. You areresponsible to present the plan, clear thedate, and obtain approval in advance fromthe Lodge Board of Officers.E. Research and evaluation. Here's whereyour Lodge Moose Legion CommitteeSecretary's records, as well as the recordsof your Lodge and the memories ofexperienced Moose Legionnaires(especially those Past Chairman) will beinvaluable.reception honoring your Moose Legionjurisdiction President or Secretary or a fullscaleproduction of the 'Legacy of theMoose' , you will want to create a timeline.Very easy. Say, for example that your eventis 3-months away.Simply take 6-sheets of paper and title them'three months' - 'two months' - 'one month' -'one week' - 'event day' and 'the day after'. Atthe top of each sheet, print the name of theevent and the day, date and time on which itwill be taking place. Nice reminder. Then, working from the event day backward, list on each sheet the things that should beaccomplished, the order in which they shouldbe accomplished, and who should beaccomplishing them - plus the 'internaldeadline' for each item. Previousrecommendations in this section will provideyou with enough food for thought for the tasksand duties that it will take to bring off yoursuccessful event. This will help you to:While it's nice to know what worked and whatdidn't (or what made money and what didn't)you will also want to consider the times andthe timing in making an evaluation. Forexample, a giant raffle (where raffles are legal)with a big screen TV as the main prize mighthave generated a lot of interest last year, butthis year it might very well have to be a DVDplayer to get people's attention. At any rate, you can see that such research and evaluationin some form is essential to your activity'ssuccess. It is also wise to consider the periods whenpeople are disposed to spend time, effort, andmoney. This varies with the area, of course, butit's worth the effort to do some research.Incidentally, you can still apply these principlesand more to brand new, never thought ofbefore events (such as a NASCAR tirechanging speed competition), because thebasic message is to plan your event or activityas efficiently as possible.F. Timeline for your event. Whether it is a✔ Properly time Committee and LodgeOfficer's approval.✔ Set up your budget [include every item andservice].✔ Erase possible conflicts.✔ Price the event.✔ Price tickets.✔ Design, execute and distribute publicityand/or invitations.✔ Set limit on reservations and close list ontime.✔ Evaluate and pick your personnel, assignspecific tasks, make a final list ofsubstitutes and compose the 'thank you'notes.✔ Determine, select and set your musicand/or entertainment.✔ Determine and execute decorations.✔ Determine and select your menu, cooksand servers.✔ Schedule ordering perishables on day ofevent.Page 18 of 32 Downloaded from www.MooseIntl.org Posted on site:10/13/2011Page 15 - GUIDE TO SUCCESS - Moose Legion Committee

✔ Determine and assign cash managementstaff if necessary.✔ Determine side events like a cake lottery orraffle, and more than anything else, do yourtroubleshooting at a glance.✔ Schedule appreciation event for workers.✔ And, anything else not on this list.Document your plans and have them availablefor future reference. Don't forget to give copies[and updates] to your principle supervisors andcrew chiefs. Keep your timeline at hand so thatyou can share it with everyone else - the righthand knowing what the left hand is doing. Why not try this out on an event and see howit works? Your timelines will become moreelaborate with practice. And, think of the workyou'll save when you want to repeat this year'ssuccess next year. For bigger and betterevents and activities, don't leave any stoneunturned - success is promised, and best of all… it will be fun!G. Transportation plans if necessary. Who(and what) will need transportation? Will itbe donated? What about gas money? Carpooling?A bus? Liability and accidentinsurance coverage? Are the driversreliable? How much time will it take bothways? Will the distance affect turnout?Does the route to the event go through amajor highway beautification projectreplacing an abandoned mine field?H. Lining up your personnel. How manypeople will this activity require? Extra onesto "spell" those at work? Can they allperform satisfactorily? If you are appointinga cook is the cook familiar with the menu? What about servers? Who will they be? Arethey experienced? Who will tell everyoneexactly what is expected of them? Will it bein writing? Will there be time for a crewmeeting beforehand? What aboutdecorations? Who will make them? Willeveryone be protected from heavy lifting? Are all safety and sanitation rules clear toeveryone?Any possibility of being exposed tohazardous materials - think … because asimple thing like "white out" is a hazardousitem. Will everyone actually be available onthe date selected? This means no spur-ofthe-momentflying trips to Outer Mongolia,or suddenly remembering 4-month oceancruises. If not, who are the backuppersonnel?Do you have reliable people who will serveas crew chiefs or supervisors? Do you havea really competent person in charge in caseyou need someone to do cashmanagement? Incidentally, lining uppersonnel also means guest speaker orspecial entertainment. Are they availablefor the specific dates you desired? Will theyhave to travel; if so, who is paying theexpenses? Will they need reservations foraccommodations? Is all this in writing?I. Publicity. You can plan the very bestactivity in the world, have the greatest crewavailable, and the ideal day and weather …but it all goes to waste if you have failed toadvertise. A few common sense rules tofollow: Advertise the event and date as farin advance as possible (at least 3-months).This can be accomplished by placing aposter on the bulletin boards of your Lodge(have a Moose Legion only bulletin board -it works!), and including an article in theLodge monthly bulletin and on the web site.Make a direct mailing to the MooseLegionnaires of your Lodge (at least 60-days in advance) and be sure this noticeincludes all the details and times.Include information on your event duringyour report to the membership during eachLodge meeting. Don't just advertise onceand then forget it. Organize a telephoneteam and make personal calls to as manyMoose Legionnaires as can be reached. One last pointer … if guests are to beincluded, be sure you send them a copy ofthe program or agenda well in advance, including travel and lodging information.J. Budgeting because resource managementlies beneath almost every humanendeavor. You will want to assign a budgetPage 19 of 32 Downloaded from www.MooseIntl.org Posted on site:10/13/2011Moose Legion Committee - GUIDE TO SUCCESS - Page 16

manager (often the committee secretary) tomonitor the existence of necessary funds;their allocations; and to account for everystep in their expenditure. This meansreceipt for money received and spent, andin most cases, approval before anexpenditure is made. Then a full accountingof all monies received and expended, andof course, all of this must be in writing withfull backup receipts.K. Thank you to everyone involved.Recognition is one of the characteristics ofall great leaders. Recognition is one of thepillars of fraternalism practiced throughoutthe Moose Legion. Certificates ofappreciation, handshakes, hugs, pats onthe back, gifts, whatever. This is the partthat most becomes all of us. Because inacknowledging others we acknowledgeourselves.Page 20 of 32 Downloaded from www.MooseIntl.org Posted on site:10/13/2011Page 17 - GUIDE TO SUCCESS - Moose Legion Committee

EVENTS OR ACTIVITIES[Many of these 'events' and 'activities' maybe held in conjunction with the Lodge FamilyActivities Committee, and involve all Lodgeand Chapter members with their families.]MOOSE LEGION COMMITTEESUGGESTED EVENTSThey say "there's nothing new under the sun".This may be true, but is there really anyonewho knows all about the past? Almost anythingis possible within budget; and can besuccessful financially, while attracting MooseLegionnaires and their families. In planning your event, program or activity, youwill want to consider some or all of the elementslisted previously. So, here are some activitiesthat might just be missing in your Lodge MooseLegion Committee … use your imagination! The most popular events are dinners, banquets, or dinner-dances, reflecting theimportance that mankind across the ages hasattached to the ritual of breaking breadtogether. We Moose Legionnaires are nodifferent, for activities involving meal functionsseem to outnumber all other events.Music helps to make these occasions morecostly to put on, but usually is a welcomedaddition. Music can come from a 'live' band[most expensive] or a disk jockey [almost asexpensive in some places]. Of course, volunteerbands and disk jockeys save lots of money, butyour committee will have to decide, based onthe quality of the music and the professionalism. Some Lodges have resident volunteerentertainers who, of course, are a plus.Dinner-dances seem to attract lots of peoplewhen they are theme events, such as acountry western night; Alice in Wonderland;Star Wars; MASH Party; or a Sock Hop night. Those attending are encouraged to wearcostumes [remember - people like to win prizesfor best costumes]. Dinner-dances held inconjunction with an important local event, suchas the country fair, rodeo, and even electionnight, all providing an opportunity for theMoose Legionnaire and his family to celebrateat the Lodge, away from the general public. Butcaution! How big a draw is that outside event -will it draw your members away from theLodge? This is another argument in favor ofpre-sold tickets. But, for what purpose would the Lodge MooseLegion Committee be giving a dinner-dance?We can celebrate:Election of Moose Legion Officers; election ofLodge Officers; acknowledgement of awards, such as Moose Legionnaire of the Year;awards conferred by the Moose Legionjurisdiction; elevation of a qualified MooseBrother into the Moose Legion degree. But, for what purpose would the Lodge MooseLegion Committee be giving a dinner-dance?We can celebrate the election of Moose LegionOfficers, the election of Lodge Officers, acknowledgement of awards such as MooseLegionnaire of the Year or other awardsconferred by the Moose Legion jurisdiction aswell as elevation of a qualified Moose Brotherinto the Moose Legion degree. There are many other reasons to celebratewith a special dinner followed by a night ofdancing. Some of these would include yourLodge hosting one of the quarterly MooseLegion Celebrations, to kick-off or conclude aMoose Legion membership program whereindividual sponsors can be acknowledged,Legacy of the Moose or Golden BallPage 21 of 32 Downloaded from www.MooseIntl.org Posted on site:10/13/2011Moose Legion Committee - GUIDE TO SUCCESS - Page 18

Ceremony, elevation of a Fellow or Pilgrim, acknowledgement of the Lodge or Chaptercharter anniversary, or simply to celebrateMoose Legion Honor Month in January.Visitations by special dignitaries would alsowarrant a night of dining and dancing in theirhonor. The creation of in-Lodgespecial activity groups can be welcome suchas singles dance group, RV Roadburners, bridge and poker groups, trivial pursuit andboard game activities, rod and gun clubs;motorcycle touring or observed trails groups,or bicycling groups all have the potential tocreate interest among members. All of these and more help your Lodge MooseLegion become the generator of ongoingfraternity and fun for all members. If possible, provide a dependable source of support for yourLodge; and, as such remain an active participantin the International and community service goalsfor which the 'Degree of Service' is noted.Incidentally, if your Lodge Moose LegionCommittee comes up with a smashing idea, why not write it down, and send it along to theInternational Moose Legion Department atMoose International - perhaps someone elsewould like to try your idea.Page 22 of 32 Downloaded from www.MooseIntl.org Posted on site:10/13/2011Page 19 - GUIDE TO SUCCESS - Moose Legion Committee
