Making a complaint about staff• If you think prison staff have broken the rules of the prison <strong>and</strong> treated you in abad way, you can complain to the governor or the area manager. In privateprisons, you should complain to the controller about complaints to do with prisoncustody officers.• Fill in a complaint form called COMP1 or you may feel happier to fill in a COMP 2form. Write the details of what you think staff did wrong on the form. For example,say what happened, where it happened <strong>and</strong> when <strong>and</strong> if anyone else saw ithappen.• A senior member of staff will look into the complaint. They will talk to you, theperson you complained about <strong>and</strong> anyone who saw what happened.If you are found to be right, the governor will• Take action with the member of staff you complained about.• Call the police if necessary.• Write to you to tell you what has been decided. This usually takes about 2 weeks.The area manager will write to you if you have complained in the more private waycalled confidential access.Changing your mind about a complaint• If you change your mind you can stop the complaint at any time.• Tell a member of staff. They will ask you to write on the form to say you want tostop your complaint.113
