RADIO ON WHEELSHere is a six-tube Murad radio-frequency receiver, with the loop inside the door under the handle. The loud-speakeroperates behind the cane front. When a station has been tuned-in, the leaves can be folded and all apparatus concealedThe Aristocracy of Radio ReceiversWHILEthere are still in useplenty of unprepossessingand shy crystal receivers andmany "ham sets" composedof little more than the conventionalrubber boot and tin can, an aristocracyof receiving sets is emerging from thecommon horde of inductances and capacities, tubes and jacks, and what-not.The most casual and disinterested observerat the recent New York radio show was struckby the many fine examples of receiver designand resplendent cabinet work. Many an enthralledamateur stopped before these beautifulsets, lost in the last stages of what the newspaperreporters love to call "open-mouthedwonder."The radio manufacturers have found thatthere is a market for self-contained sets, wellbuilt and finished with all the care of a sonorouspiano. The perfection of the loop antenna andthe wide use of amplification radio and audiohave made self-contained sets possible. So, with the aid of the cabinet manufacturer, certain types of radio receivers have come to bedesigned more as pieces of fine furniture todecorate fine rooms than as rough and nottoo-efficient pieces of experimental apparatus, curiosities which had their proper place in someinconspicuous corner where a mess of wires, tools and parts was not objectionable. Many of the receivers made for "discriminatingpurchasers" require an outside antennaand ground, but generally have their operatingbatteries and tubes installed in the cabinet itself.Several sets have been built which operatefrom loop antennas attached to or withinthe cabinet.
