Abstract<br />

We evaluated five modified <strong>formulations</strong> <strong>of</strong> Tracer ® , conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the active <strong>in</strong>gredient<br />

<strong>sp<strong>in</strong>osad</strong>, <strong>to</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>e if residual activity could be extended on labora<strong>to</strong>ry-sprayed pots<br />

<strong>of</strong> r<strong>an</strong>ge grass as compared with the st<strong>an</strong>dard Tracer ® formulation. This study is a<br />

follow-up <strong>to</strong> field cage studies with the same <strong>formulations</strong> conducted <strong>in</strong> July 2007 near<br />

Edgemont, South Dakota. We conducted the labora<strong>to</strong>ry study three times over a period<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>six</strong> months, us<strong>in</strong>g four different grasshopper species. The species <strong>in</strong>cluded fieldcollected<br />

Phoetaliotes nebrascensis, Mel<strong>an</strong>oplus glads<strong>to</strong>ni, Mel<strong>an</strong>oplus lak<strong>in</strong>us <strong>an</strong>d<br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ry-reared Mel<strong>an</strong>oplus s<strong>an</strong>gu<strong>in</strong>ipes. Numbers <strong>of</strong> treatments <strong>an</strong>d species used<br />

varied due <strong>to</strong> the availability <strong>of</strong> particular grasshopper species. Unusually high mortality<br />

<strong>in</strong> the untreated population prevented us from mak<strong>in</strong>g statistically signific<strong>an</strong>t<br />

comparisons <strong>in</strong> <strong>an</strong>y <strong>of</strong> the three studies.<br />

Introduction<br />

Tracer ® is a fermentation-derived <strong>in</strong>sect control agent registered for pest control <strong>in</strong><br />

cot<strong>to</strong>n, field corn, sorghum, soybe<strong>an</strong>s, small gra<strong>in</strong>s <strong>an</strong>d <strong>to</strong>bacco. The formulation<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>s the active <strong>in</strong>gredient <strong>sp<strong>in</strong>osad</strong> (a mixture <strong>of</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>osyn A <strong>an</strong>d sp<strong>in</strong>osyn D).
