carriers were pooled <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>alyzed as bait with <strong>an</strong>d without c<strong>an</strong>ola oil <strong>in</strong> 5 replications<br />

with 30 grasshopper observations per replication, no signific<strong>an</strong>t differences <strong>in</strong> mortality<br />

were detected at <strong>an</strong>y post treatment <strong>in</strong>tervals. (2) When the three carriers were pooled<br />

<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>alyzed as 15 replicates with <strong>an</strong>d without c<strong>an</strong>ola oil <strong>an</strong>d 5 untreated replicates the<br />

results showed bait with oil produc<strong>in</strong>g signific<strong>an</strong>tly higher mortality th<strong>an</strong> bait without oil<br />

only at 7 DAT. However, mortality attributed <strong>to</strong> bait with oil was not signific<strong>an</strong>tly higher<br />

th<strong>an</strong> what occurred <strong>in</strong> the untreated population. Additionally, this difference was only<br />

detected at one <strong>of</strong> the 7 <strong>in</strong>tervals <strong>an</strong>alyzed, 7 DAT. (3) Aga<strong>in</strong>, when the data were pooled<br />

as 15 replicates with <strong>an</strong>d without c<strong>an</strong>ola oil <strong>an</strong>d no untreated data was <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the<br />

<strong>an</strong>alysis, a signific<strong>an</strong>t difference was detected. But as before, this occurred at only one <strong>of</strong><br />

the 7 <strong>in</strong>tervals <strong>an</strong>alyzed, 7 DAT. In a f<strong>in</strong>al <strong>an</strong>alysis where data was adjusted for the<br />

mortality that occurred <strong>in</strong> the untreated population, no signific<strong>an</strong>t difference between<br />

treatments <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> mortality, was detected. Because <strong>of</strong> the m<strong>in</strong>imal if <strong>an</strong>y <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong><br />

mortality seen <strong>in</strong> this study, <strong>an</strong>y improvement <strong>in</strong> efficacy due <strong>to</strong> the addition <strong>of</strong> c<strong>an</strong>ola oil<br />

is considered negligible.<br />

Conclusions<br />

Data from this study <strong>in</strong>dicates that the addition <strong>of</strong> c<strong>an</strong>ola oil <strong>to</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g baits (wheat br<strong>an</strong>,<br />

apple pumice or food waste) for r<strong>an</strong>gel<strong>an</strong>d grasshoppers does not improve the efficacy<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st Cordillacris occipitalis, a species considered <strong>to</strong> be “nonsusceptible” <strong>to</strong> baits.<br />

Only additional studies aga<strong>in</strong>st other “nonsusceptible” species will unquestionably<br />

confirm similar responses <strong>of</strong> other species <strong>in</strong> the group. Additional studies should also be<br />

conducted <strong>to</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>e if bait efficacy aga<strong>in</strong>st “vulnerable” or “sensitive” species c<strong>an</strong> be<br />

improved <strong>to</strong> <strong>an</strong>y signific<strong>an</strong>t extent with the addition <strong>of</strong> c<strong>an</strong>ola oil. However, until further<br />

data <strong>to</strong> the contrary is developed, it appears that improvement, if <strong>an</strong>y, <strong>in</strong> bait efficacy that<br />

c<strong>an</strong> attributed <strong>to</strong> the addition <strong>of</strong> c<strong>an</strong>ola oil is negligible aga<strong>in</strong>st r<strong>an</strong>gel<strong>an</strong>d grasshopper<br />

species.<br />
