His research is concentrated on <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Roman</strong> Empire, butalso on <strong>the</strong> Hellenistic period, on <strong>the</strong> economic his<strong>to</strong>ry of antiquity, and on <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ryand archaeology of ancient Ana<strong>to</strong>lia. He has written numerous publications on<strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Roman</strong> army, for example Untersuchungen zu den DakerkriegenTrajans (1984) and Die Donaukriege Domitians (1989).James Thorne studied archaeology at University College London before joining<strong>the</strong> British army in 1995, subsequently serving with <strong>the</strong> Royal Tank Regiment. HisPh.D. <strong>the</strong>sis (Manchester 2005) was entitled Caesar and <strong>the</strong> Gauls: Imperialism andRegional Conflict. His current teaching at <strong>the</strong> University of Manchester includes acourse on “<strong>Roman</strong> Imperialism 264 bc–ad 69”; his o<strong>the</strong>r interests include warfarein classical Greece, on which he has published, ancient logistics, and a planned bookon <strong>the</strong> transformation of empires in<strong>to</strong> states.Gabriele Wesch-Klein teaches ancient his<strong>to</strong>ry at <strong>the</strong> University of Heidelberg,Germany. She is author of several articles concerning <strong>the</strong> <strong>Roman</strong> army during <strong>the</strong>principate. She has also published Soziale Aspekte des römischen Heerwesens in derKaiserzeit (1998).Everett L. Wheeler (Ph.D., Duke University) has taught his<strong>to</strong>ry and classical studiesat University of Missouri/Columbia, University of Louisville, Duke University, andNorth Carolina State University. Besides publishing numerous papers on ancientmilitary his<strong>to</strong>ry, <strong>the</strong> Hellenistic and <strong>Roman</strong> East, and <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry of military <strong>the</strong>ory,he translated (with Peter Krentz) Polyaenus’ Stratagems of War (1994). His Stratagemand <strong>the</strong> Vocabulary of Military Trickery appeared in 1988. An edited volume, TheArmies of Classical Greece, is forthcoming.
