116 A b u n d a n t L i v i n gFor this reason, since the day we heard about you,we have not stopped praying for you and askingGod to fill you with the knowledge of his willthrough all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a lifeworthy of the Lord and may please him in everyway: bearing fruit in every good work, growingin the knowledge of God, being strengthened withall power according to his glorious might so thatyou may have great endurance and patience.3. Patience, joy, and hope. In Romans 5:3–4 groupedtogether are suffering, joy, patience, and hope: “We also rejoicein our sufferings, because we know that suffering producesperseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”These verses show the progression of Christian development andmaturity through suffering and patience, leading to hope. It is nottoo difficult to wait and hope when things seem to be working out,but when nothing seems to be happening to relieve the suffering, the natural reaction is to feel despair and hopelessness. Patience,as the fruit of the Spirit, is not a gloomy and blind acceptance ofthis kind of situation—it is being filled with joy and confidence inthe Lord. Such patience makes us echo the psalmist, “You are myGod. My times are in your hands” (Psalm 31:14–15).4. Patience and wisdom. Proverbs 14:29 says, “A patientman has great understanding, but a quick-tempered mandisplays folly.” A patient person will try to understand allsides of a problem before he draws conclusions and makesjudgments. This characteristic will help parents to train theirchildren wisely; it will promote peace within the body ofChrist; and it will help each of us in our daily relationships.5. Patience and peace. Patience as spiritual fruit is a powerfulresource to calm a situation. Proverbs 15:18 describes whathappens: “A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patientman calms a quarrel.” This goes back to the idea of being apeacemaker, which we studied in the last lesson. A patient manwill not be controlled by his anger but will demonstrate the peaceof God in his actions, words, concern, and assistance.
