Summarize the apostle Paul’s teaching concerning thedesired relationship between spiritual fruit and spiritualgifts.It is sometimes difficult to tell the difference between realand imitation fruit. The imitation fruit can give the impressionof being real, but if you try to eat it, immediately you know thatit is not real.The same analogy may be made of Christians. On thesurface it may be difficult to distinguish between a personwho truly is like Christ and one who merely has an outwardappearance of a Christian. They may display similar behaviorssuch as a manifestation of spiritual gifts, but the true test comesas the inward character of the individual is expressed in hiseveryday life. Jesus said that true disciples of His are known bythe quality of love they express towards each other.The fruit of the Spirit is so very important in our lives! TheChristians who lived in Corinth at the time the New Testamentwas written exercised nine gifts of the Spirit—they spoke withtongues, they prophesied, they performed miracles. However,they lacked the fruit of the same Spirit—they competed withone another in their local assembly (1 Corinthians 11:17–18);they went to court and sued each other in front of non-Christians (1 Corinthians 6:1–8). Some lived in immorality(1 Corinthians 5:1–2). Some even ate of the Lord’s Supperwhile they were drunk (1 Corinthians 11:20–21). In writing tothem, the apostle Paul was very patient and loving. He wantedthem to know the empowering Spirit, who gave them gifts tobuild up the church. But more than that, he wanted them toknow the sanctifying Spirit who could change their characterand make them like Jesus.Paul encouraged the Corinthians to desire eagerly the giftsof the Spirit, but he concluded by saying, “And now I willshow you the most excellent way” (1 Corinthians 12:31). The“most excellent way” is love—God’s love as it is expressedand described in 1 Corinthians 13. There we read that the gifts
