216 A b u n d a n t L i v i n gand widows “cannot control themselves, they should marry, for itis better to marry than to burn with passion” (vv. 8–9). The wordcontrol is translated from enkrateuomai, the same verb used forself-control as the fruit of the Spirit. People willing to remainunmarried need the “enkrateuomai” of the Holy Spirit to controlnormal sexual desires. The importance of this control is madeclear in 1 Thessalonians 4:3–7:It is God’s will that you should be sanctified:that you should avoid sexual immorality; thateach of you should learn to control his ownbody in a way that is holy and honorable, notin passionate lust like the heathen, who donot know God; and that in this matter no oneshould wrong his brother or take advantageof him. The Lord will punish men for all suchsins, as we have already told you and warnedyou. For God did not call us to be impure, butto live a holy life.Application6 According to this Scripture, the greatest danger for one wholacks self-control in sexual desire is that it is a sin againsta) God.b) his own body.c) another person.3. Moderation in daily habits. In 1 Corinthians 6:12–20the apostle Paul emphasizes the importance of honoringGod with your body. Not only is he speaking about sexualimmorality in this passage, but also about any other practicewhich would dishonor your body and thus dishonor God.Paul writes, “Everything is permissible for me”—but noteverything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me”—but I will not be mastered by anything. “Food for the stomachand the stomach for food”—but God will destroy them both”(vs. 12–13).
