State principles related to biblical kindness andgoodness.Service to OthersGodliness and goodness cannot be disassociated. Thereare two divine principles involved here: 1) Personal salvation, and 2) Service to others. Goodness was God’s plan for manfrom the beginning. Man’s spiritual condition affects hissocial interactions. We see this illustrated in the two greatestcommandments (see Mark 12:29–31):RELATIONSHIP TO GODRELATIONSHIP TO OTHERS1. Love the Lord your God. 2. Love your neighbor asyourself. This principle can be further illustrated by two sets ofquestions in the Bible:RELATIONSHIP TO GODGenesis 3:9 “‘Where areyou?’”Luke 10:25 “‘What must Ido to inherit eternal life?’”RELATIONSHIP TO OTHERSGenesis 4:9 “‘Where is yourbrother?’”Luke 10:29 “‘And who is myto neighbor?’”In the examples from Genesis, God asked the first questionof Adam and Eve immediately after they had sinned bydisobeying Him. His question was one of concern about theirspiritual condition. He asked the second question of Cainimmediately after he had murdered his brother Abel. God’squestion was one of concern about the evil he had done to hisbrother. In the examples from Luke, these are the two questionswhich an expert in the law asked Jesus. The first relates tohis spiritual condition, and the second relates to his socialcondition. His personal relationship to God had to be dealtwith first: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind.” Then his relationship of service to othersfollowed: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
