<strong>Oyu</strong> <strong>Tolgoi</strong> Project<strong>Mining</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Processing</strong> <strong>EIA</strong>ground <strong>and</strong> underground water resources, soil, flora <strong>and</strong> fauna, living condition of human inhabitantsor native herder families of the area, socio-economic conditions, historical <strong>and</strong> cultural heritagespreserved in the area, provided that the proposed copper-gold mine <strong>and</strong> associated process facilitiesare developed at <strong>Oyu</strong> <strong>Tolgoi</strong>; <strong>and</strong> (ii) the optimal methods to mitigate the negative impacts thereof. Inorder for these objectives, Eco Trade XXK has performed the following studies since 2002:1. Environmental Baseline Study for the <strong>Oyu</strong> <strong>Tolgoi</strong> mining lease <strong>and</strong> the surrounding areas. Thestudy was performed by an independent study team in 2002 in the following areas:geographical <strong>and</strong> geological settings, ground <strong>and</strong> underground water resources, climate, airquality, soil, flora <strong>and</strong> fauna, population, socio-economic conditions, livestock <strong>and</strong> usage ofpasturel<strong>and</strong>. The findings of the studies were incorporated in this assessment.2. Detailed study on the damage <strong>and</strong> degradation of ground <strong>and</strong> underground water, air quality,soil <strong>and</strong> vegetation cover of the <strong>Oyu</strong> <strong>Tolgoi</strong> mining lease; <strong>and</strong> determination of rare <strong>and</strong> veryrare plant species, their distribution <strong>and</strong> possibility to relocate, soil rehabilitation, rate of dustemission <strong>and</strong> methods to mitigate dust <strong>and</strong> dust sources. The findings of the studies are usedin this assessment.3. Summer <strong>and</strong> winter camps of the herder families who live near the project, potable <strong>and</strong>household water sources <strong>and</strong> their quality, current socio-economic condition of the herderfamilies.4. Determination of the extent of impact from <strong>Oyu</strong> <strong>Tolgoi</strong> Project on the l<strong>and</strong>scape, air quality,ground <strong>and</strong> underground water sources, soil <strong>and</strong> vegetation cover <strong>and</strong> socio-economic aspectsof the local residents within the project area <strong>and</strong> the surrounding areas; indicate the impactsmitigation methods. In addition, review of applicable Mongolian <strong>and</strong> international laws,regulations, st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> procedures were also done.These studies were conducted by research teams led by Sc.D. (Geography) D. Dorjsuren, Director ofEco Trade XXK, Sc.D. (biology) <strong>and</strong> Prof. A. Bold, Member of the Academy of Sciences, Sc.D.(Geology <strong>and</strong> Minerals) <strong>and</strong> Prof. N. Batsukh, Ph.D. (History) <strong>and</strong> Prof. D. Tseveendorj, Sc.D.(Physics <strong>and</strong> Math) <strong>and</strong> Prof. R. Mijiddorj, Sc.D. (Geology <strong>and</strong> Minerals) R. Battumur, Sc.D.(Economy), Т. Narantuya <strong>and</strong> T. Enkhtulga, botanist J. Sanjid, pedologist Т. Munkhbat, geotechnicianYa. Jambaljav, geographer <strong>and</strong> IT specialist P. Janchivdorj <strong>and</strong> geographer А. Tsend-Ayush. About 60researchers <strong>and</strong> specialists, The Central Laboratory of Environmental Studies, Institute of Chemistry atthe Academy of Sciences, chemistry laboratories of the Geo-ecological Institute, <strong>and</strong> the researchlaboratories of the University of Science <strong>and</strong> Technology were involved in the assessment studies.
