Fall habitat for sage-<strong>grouse</strong> can vary greatly. <strong>Sage</strong><strong>grouse</strong><br />

will cont<strong>in</strong>ue us<strong>in</strong>g wet meadows, riparian areas<br />

and irrigated fields until their food source <strong>of</strong> forbs dries<br />

up or is killed by frost. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this period their diet will<br />

change back to predom<strong>in</strong>antly sagebrush and the birds<br />

will move to areas where it is available.<br />

W<strong>in</strong>ter<br />

<strong>Sage</strong>-<strong>grouse</strong> spend the w<strong>in</strong>ter <strong>in</strong> sagebrush<br />

dom<strong>in</strong>ated landscapes where they rely almost exclusively<br />

on sagebrush for both forage and shelter. W<strong>in</strong>ter habitat<br />

characteristics are listed <strong>in</strong> Table 3. The habitat they<br />

choose is dependent on snow depth, elevation, and<br />

aspect. <strong>Sage</strong>-<strong>grouse</strong> tend to prefer south and southwest<br />

fac<strong>in</strong>g aspects and very gentle slopes. They can <strong>of</strong>ten be<br />

seen on w<strong>in</strong>dswept ridges, draws, or any location that<br />

has significant sagebrush available above the snow.<br />
