K I N G S P O R T C I T Y S C H O O : S T U D E N T H A N D B O O KFOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS<strong>Kingsport</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> welcomes diversity in the student body, including the participation ofinternational exchange students in school system activities. All international exchange studentsmust comply with the following requirements 5 :Participate through an agency endorsed by the Council on Standards for InternationalEducational TravelMeet the Department of Homeland Security requirements for participationProvide health record documentationHost families must reside within <strong>Kingsport</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> zoning areaHost families are required to provide the school system with six (6) weeks advancenotice that they intend to host a student who shall be attending KCS. Registration isrequired prior to class attendance.Please contact Dobyns-Bennett High School at (423) 378.8400 for greater detail regardinginternational exchange student requirements and information regarding host families.LOST AND FOUNDPersonal items found around the school should be taken to the individual school's designatedarea. <strong>Student</strong>s who have lost personal items should check there periodically to see if theirmissing items have been turned in. Parents are advised to label all articles of clothing, lunchboxes, backpacks, purses, etc., with the student's name. After a reasonable time, unclaimeditems will be donated to charitable organizations.MAKE-UP WORKWork missed during an absence, whether excused or unexcused, may be made up in a mannerand within a time frame established by the teacher. Teachers will operate within guidelines setby the principal. The guidelines for make-up work, established by the principal, may varydepending on the type of absence.ELEMENTARY SCHOOLWhen a student is absent from school and make-up work is desired, requests should be madeto the school secretary by 8:15 a.m. The assignments should be picked up from the officebetween 3:15 p.m. and 4 p.m. on the same day. Graded work will be made up after the studentreturns to school.MIDDLE SCHOOLThe counseling office will accept requests to gather homework/assignments for absentstudents. Please follow these guidelines:Only ask for homework/assignments if the student will be absent for two or more days.Phone in your request before 9 a.m. and wait until 2:45 p.m. to pick up.Bring your child's locker number and combination so that you will be able to retrieve books andother materials.5BOE Policy 6.5028
