K I N G S P O R T C I T Y S C H O O : S T U D E N T H A N D B O O KSECTION2STUDENT SERVICESCOUNSELINGEvery school has at least one school counselor whose job is to give guidance, help orassistance. Counselors also assist students with their educational, personal, and socialconcerns. The Counseling Office staff counsels individuals/groups, consults withparents/teachers, distributes educational/ occupational information, communicates withstaff/community, prepares students’ schedules, maintains student records, manages the schooltesting program, and refers students/families to community agencies. In addition, staff memberscoordinate various programs, such as Career Carnival, Study Partners, Natural Helpers, PeerMediation, <strong>Student</strong>/Parent Orientation, and Parent/Teacher conferences. When students haveproblems, concerns, or just want to talk to someone, teachers, counselors, and administratorsare always ready to listen and to help.HEALTH SERVICESThe following information outlines when students should or should not stay home from school.CHICKEN POXChildren with uncomplicated chicken pox may return after he/she is fever-free fortwenty-four (24) hours without the use of fever controlling medications and after allblisters have dry, complete scabs. This is usually seven (7) days from the beginningof the breakout with the pox.CHILDHOOD CONTAGIOUS DISEASEChildren should stay home from school (until advised by provider) if there is asuspicion of any childhood contagious disease such as measles, mumps, rubella orchicken pox.COLD (UPPER RESPIRATORY ILLNESS)(With mild symptoms such as stuffy nose with clear drainage, sneezing, and mildcough.)Your child may attend school if he or she is able to participate in school activities andfever-free for twenty-four (24) hours without the use of fever controlling medications.The fever should be less than 101 degrees unless the child is less than six (6) monthsof age and the fever should be less than 100 degrees.CONJUNCTIVITIS (PINK-EYE)<strong>Student</strong>s may return twenty-four (24) hours after treatment is started and signs andsymptoms of eye drainage are greatly reduced.18
