<strong>Isaiah</strong> 40-45the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of theLORD has spoken it. 6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All fleshis grass, and all the goodness of them is as the flower of the field: 7 The grasswithers, the flower fades: because the spirit of the LORD blows on it: surely thepeople are grass. 8 The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God shallstand for ever. 9. O Zion, who brings good tidings, get you up into the highmountain; O Jerusalem, who brings good tidings, lift up your voice with strength; liftit up, be not afraid; say to the cities of Judah, Behold your God!Verse 9: Cities of Judah: Jesus is a Nazarene from Galilee. It may be argued, to fulfillthis passage, that he was first introduced as the Messiah to those in Judea at his baptismby John the Baptist not far from Jerico on the banks of the Jordan River. However mostof his teaching ministry took place in Galilee. Peter's confession of his Godhood, whichthis verse makes the center of the announcement, was in Galilee and his most importantmiracles (excluding the resurrection) were performed in Galilee. However what isspecifically pointed out here is that the cities of Judah are to receive him. Historically,in the return from Babylon, the second commonwealth of all twelve tribes was knownas the Kingdom of Judah. The state of Israel was not reconstituted. Israel was containedin the nation of Judah. In that sense all the cities of the nation to which Jesus theNazarene ministered and was announced as Messiah were, whether in Judea or Galilee,in Judah. Thus even Nazareth, Cana of Galilee and Capernaum were in Judah.10 Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule forhim: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. 11 He shall feed hisflock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in hisbosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. 12. Who has measured thewaters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, andcomprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains inscales, and the hills in a balance? 13 Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, orbeing his counselor has taught him? 14 With whom took he counsel, or whoinstructed him, or taught him in the path of judgment, or taught him knowledge, orshowed to him the way of understanding? 15 Behold, the nations are as a drop of abucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he takes up theisles as a very little thing. 16 And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts ofit sufficient for a burnt offering. 17 All nations before him are as nothing; and theyare counted to him less than nothing, and vanity. 18. To whom then will you likenGod? or what likeness will you compare to him? 19 The workman melts a gravenimage, and the goldsmith spreads it over with gold, and casts silver chains. 20 Hethat is so impoverished that he has no oblation chooses a tree that will not rot; heseeks for himself a cunning workman to prepare a graven image, that shall not bemoved. 21 Have you not known? have you not heard? has it not been told you fromthe beginning? have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22 It ishe who sits upon the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are as grasshoppers; whostretches out the heavens as a curtain, and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in:Verse 22. Circle The Hebrew word here for "circle" is "chug" and is used in only twohttp://www.ao.net/~fmoeller/40-45.htm (3 of 17)2006-08-01 11:49:29
