The TEEB Manual for Cities: Ecosystem Services in Urban ManagementIn order to integrate ecosystem servicesinto spatial planning it is importantto develop a multi-scale approachto decision making, and ensure thatthis becomes part of socio-economicdecision making as a whole. At the localscale there are key policy issues whichwould benefit from better integration ofecosystem services into planning anddecision making:● Human health and quality of life(e.g. air pollution regulation by greeninfrastructure, “green lungs”, accessto safe drinking water and sanitation,and access to green spaces);● Water security, provision andpurification (e.g. forest designation,land restoration, land use practices,and potentially payments forecosystem services);● Climate adaptation, climate regulationand climate change mitigation (e.g.investment in green roofs , greenspaces and green road verges);● Flood control benefits (e.g. investmentsin green infrastructures,planning and zoning);● Energy security (e.g. biomass aroundcities and green infrastructures in cities);● Food security (e.g. soil quality anderosion control, genetic diversity);● Biodiversity (e.g. investment in greeninfrastructures, protected areas,wetlands and parks);● Recreation and tourism (e.g.protected areas, quality oflandscapes);● Transport and mobility (e.g.sustainable transport, and greening ofgrey infrastructure though green roadverges); and● Locational quality, competitivenessand attraction to inward investment(e.g. quality landscapes andamenities to attract business).Integrating ecosystem services into spatial planning plays an essential role in creating sustainable communities and cities.Michael Sondermann/City of Bonn35
