Shri Jawaharlal Nehru did not find the book worthyof even discussion and the same Mr Nehru wasgroomed by Gandhiji as his successor. It is said that in1946, when for the Presidentship of Congress, SardarPatel received overwhelming support from the stateunits, but Gandhiji made all efforts to annointMr Nehru as the Congress President...... because after the transformation ofpower, the Congress chief had to playa crucial role and moreover, he has tobecome the Prime Minister of Indiaafter independence.took the revenge of canning Lala Lajpatrai by the Police during a peacefulprotest. The Britons with whom Gandhiji met to muster the supportexpressed deep concern on the `violence` of freedom strugglers. BritishGovernment failed to act against revolutionaries in London due to thefollowing reasons. 1) The global circumstances forced British Governmentto pose itself as law abiding and descent. 2) International laws bound theGovernment to act cautiously. 3) The pressure of awareness in Europeancommunity, which was in favor of humanity and against colonialism. 4)In England itself, the brave Indian revolutionaries were getting massivepublic support. It is to be remembered that Gandhiji had visited London to garner supportand for the purpose, he even cooperated British in South Africa to achievehis ultimate target. When the British forces oppressed innocent boerfarmers, Gandhiji immediately rushed to the service of injured Britishjawans. Why should we forget that Gandhiji was a great political fighterand the rules of political war can not be put to test for general morality. Why this excellent political maneuvering of Gandhiji, which always keptBritish Government on alert should not be learnt by the present politicalworkers. The book has, besides revolutionaries, also found mention of `Bangbhang`agitation against which wide public opinion had generated andthe people stood protesting vigorously against the order following whichthe British Government was forced to withdraw the order. During theagitation, the Hindu Muslim unity remained unstrained and intact. Butin the book `Hind Swaraj`, Gandhiji highlighted the difference in Hinduand Muslim community and underlined it as a major reason for spreadingand strengthening British rule in Bharat. Thus, `Hind Swaraj` has becomestrategic documentation. It is very clear that the book is notrelevant today as for six to seven years, after writing the book, Gandhi ji hadnot come to India and it is also clearthat he does not intend to come toIndia for political work, while writingthe book. When I discussed it withProfessor Rameshwar Prasad Mishra, who had read Gandhi ji deeply, hetold that Gandhi ji himself had neverattached importance to the book `HindSwaraj` because Shri Jawaharlal Nehrudid not consider the book worthy ofeven discussion. Gandhi ji consideredShri Nehru as his successor and duringthe presidential election, when most ofthe regional committees of differentstates were in favor of Sardar Patel in1946, Gandhi ji made sustained effortsto anoint Nehru as the party President. The party President of the Congresshad to play a crucial role during thetransformation of the power and to holdthe post of Prime Minister thereafter.Had Gandhi ji attached importance toHind Swaraj, he would not have goneover-board to support Shri Nehru.Gandhi ji was not incautious or carelessperson. He was not a non-politicalperson too. Shri Mishra told that `HindSwaraj` was given importance in theyear of his 125th birth anniversary. It was during a massive agitation, when a group of Gandhians opposedthe Congress and activated in thefavor of Shri Jaiprakash Narayan. TheGandhian leaders opposed Shri Nehru,Smt Indira Gandhi and the Congressand highlighted that neglect to `HindSwaraj` to prove the point that theCongress has no faith in Gandhi ji.22 & YOGSANDESH & October 2013
And after 1980, Hind Swaraj was givenimportance to reap immediate politicalbenefits. This point raised by ShriMishra was worth considering.Gandhi ji lived a committed lifefor the people and to highlight hispolitical maneuvering, ignoring hiscommitment is not `Gandhi bhakti`.People, with better understanding ofpolitics, if write something on Gandhiji,it would be helpful in establishingswaraj in Hindustan. It is not thatpolitics is easy task though, the personwhom you are fighting is standingright in front of you. The words saidare weapons having deep meaning ofdifferent layers.Had Gandhi ji, who advised Jewish tosurrender before Hitler, not incurredthe wrath of Congress to distributepamphlets encouraging recruitmentsof Indians in the army? This was theservice of Gandhi ji to the countryand his life has become a message toeveryone. It would be unjustified to make effortsto understand the basic objectives andideals of Gandhi ji on the basis of whathe had preached in `Hind Swaraj`. Thetop-most agenda of Gandhi ji was theliberation of the country but there is noclear available opinion regarding, howthe country would run after achievingthis task. Though, he had given manyvaluable suggestions, helpful in goodgovernance. He had never propagatedhimself as messiah or prophet. He alsodid not consider himself as the topmost leader of the country in his era.On the contrary, he said that SwamiShraddhanand was a tall leader ascompared to him. He put Swami Shraddhanand ji at par with Jesus Christ. He had lot of respect for Mahamana Madanmohan Malviya and the biggestpoint is that he had deep faith in the democracy. His concept of democracywas not the present Parliamentary system. His stress was on Panchayatisystem with village and community panchayats in the ascending orderof the representation. He wants to have a national Panchayat in place ofthe present Parliament. He was utterly critical Parliament in the presentsystem but he did not want to thrust upon his opinion on the country. It is also a fact that people, who propagated him as father of the nationmeans a prophet, do not have true admiration and devotion towards him. They just want to exploit his name for their petty political gains. Theydid not follow Gandhian philosophy. Gandhi ji had always said that `theconcept of non-violence he is propagating is his concept. The Indiancivilization and culture did not accept such non-violence philosophy. All the god- goddess in Hindu `dharma` have weapons and bravery isthe characteristic of Hinduism. I want to create a non-violent world infuture and in that context, the philosophy propagated by me could be astrong ground, provided each nation, society and the group accepts it.Gandhi ji himself admitted that even Congress has not accepted his nonviolencephilosophy. The Congress as their strategy only accepted noncooperationmovement. To hold peaceful opposition was the compulsionof the Congress in the given circumstances as British had through IndianArms Act in 1858, held Indians impotent. Presently, Indians does not haveweaponry power but equipped with the moral-courage and will-powerare competent enough to face the armed and demonical power of Britishrule. I want to awaken such bravery in Indians`.Hence, it is clear that Gandhi ji was very practical politician and hismain motive was the liberation of the nation. Friendship with British andtheir opposition, both are strategies to achieve the ultimate goal as thereis no elementary difference in two strategies as friendship was for thecountry and the humanity and opposition was also for the same purpose. On clearly understanding the objective, we could understand the depthof the logic behind amity and strong opposition of the British. People, who consider Gandhi as a `Paigambar` and want to run a sect shouldexperiment it at international level. Transforming the nation as impotent(said by Gandhi ji himself), coward, soft, lack of moral firmness, modestand pathetic in the name of Gandhi ji is betrayal to not only him but withthe country as well. Hind Swaraj shall be seen in context of the objectives, principles and the nationalism of Gandhi ji. To consider `Hind Swaraj` asBible is a foolish effort. It is an important political document but not anapocalyptical book. §October 2013 & YOGSANDESH & 23
