The services sector is dominated by tourism (transportation <strong>and</strong> travel services) <strong>and</strong>financial services (banking <strong>and</strong> reinsurance). Financial services accounted for 9 percent <strong>of</strong> GDP in 2005. Theconstruction sector also has grown in recent years as a result <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> public- <strong>and</strong> private-sectorprojects. In addition to national output, the services sector is also the largest source <strong>of</strong> employment in thedomestic economy.Tourism is one <strong>of</strong> the key revenue-earning sectors for Antigua <strong>and</strong> Barbuda <strong>and</strong> is one <strong>of</strong> the most importantareas driving FDI in the country. Tourism accounts for an estimated 28 percent <strong>of</strong> employment, 48 percent<strong>of</strong> export earnings, <strong>and</strong> 51 percent <strong>of</strong> total investments in Antigua <strong>and</strong> Barbuda. Recent improvements in thissector include the 2003 completion <strong>of</strong> a cruise ship complex at St. John’s Harbor <strong>and</strong> the 2006 establishment<strong>of</strong> the Antigua <strong>and</strong> Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute to supply trained personnel to service this sector.Antigua also is host to a world-class alcohol <strong>and</strong> drug addiction treatment center.4-5
