AVhen they are withoutdefect, and of sufficient size, their colour amongst gemsis most prized. The garnet of Bohemia is also calledthat of Ceylon.Its colour isso strikingly blood-red, that it is calledred garnet. Its specific weight greater than that ofthe amethystis 4-1888. It is less hard than thegarnet of Syriam, melts with greater facility, butbreaks with difficulty. It exerts a sensible influence onthe magnetic needle ;is of a very vivid blood colour,but, looked at through the light, it has a yellowish-redcolour, more vivid at the edges, and almost like thejacinth.It has the peculiar property of resisting the firewithout losing either colour, weight, or transparency.
