The adventof Germans and Scotch-Irish will be treatedin a future chapter.Having thus considered the composition of societyin its different strata, as connected withwholesale tobacco culture, let us observe one ofthe most conspicuous results of this industryas influenced by the physical geography of thecountry. One might suppose that the necessityfor exporting the enormous crops of tobacco wouldhave called into existence a large class of thrivingmerchants, who would naturally congregate atpoints favourable for shipping, and thus give riseto towns.
