We are told by the younger RichardHenry Lee that in these circumstances originatedthe famous epithet " <strong>Old</strong> Dominion." In1702, among several alterations in the seal, theword quintum was changed to quintam, to agreewith the unexpressed noun coronam ; " Behold,<strong>Virginia</strong> gives the fifth [crown]." After thelegislative union of Engl<strong>and</strong> with Scotl<strong>and</strong> in1707, anot<strong>her</strong> seal, adopted in 1714, substitutedquartam for quijitam}Just how many members of the royalist partycame to <strong>Virginia</strong> while their young king was offupon his travels, it would be difficult to say. Butt<strong>her</strong>e were unquestionably a great many. Wehave already remarked upon the very rapid increaseof white population, from about 15,000 iu1649 to 38,000 in 1670.
