THE COMING OF THE CAVALIERS. 231663, has the same motto, the effect of which wasto rank Virginia by the side of his Majesty's otherfour dominions, England, Scotkmd, " France,"and Ireland. We are told by the younger RichardHenry Lee that in these circumstances originatedthe famous epithet " Old Dominion." In1702, among several alterations in the seal, theword quintum was changed to quintam, to agreewith the unexpressed noun coronam ; " Behold,Virginia gives the fifth [crown]." After thelegislative union of England with Scotland in1707, another seal, adopted in 1714, substitutedquartam for quijitam}Just how many members of the royalist partycame to Virginia while their young king was offupon his travels, it would be difficult to say. Butthere were unquestionably a great many. Wehave already remarked upon the very rapid increaseof white population, from about 15,000 iu1649 to 38,000 in 1670. Along with thisthere was a marked increase in the size. . , Increase in.the size ofland grants.of the land grants, both the average sizeand the maximum ; and in this coupling of factsthere isgreat significance, for they show that theincrease of population was predominantly an increasein the numbers of the upper class, of thepeople who could afford to have large estates.these respects the year 1650 marks an abruptchange,^ which may best be shown by a tabularview of the figures —:In^ See the able paper by Dr. L.
