OneEastchurch ^^ them, by name Eastchurch, had beenand Miller,gpeakcr of the assembly ; and so anxiouswere the lordsproprietors to have their intentionscarried out without irritating the people, that inthe autumn of 1676 they appointed him governorof Albemarle. The other was a person namedMiller, who had been illegally carried to Virginiaand tried by Governor Berkeley for making aseditious speech in Carolina. In England hefound it profitable to pose as a martyr. The proprietorsmade him secretary of Albemarle, andthe king's commissioners of customs made himcollector of the revenues of that colony. Earlyin 1677 the new governor and secretary sailed forAmerica, and made a stop at the little island ofNevis, famous in later years as the birthplace ofAlexander Hamilton. For Eastchurch it provedto be an isle of Calypso. He fell in love witha fair Creole and staid to press his suit, whilehe appointed Miller president of the council, andsent him on in that capacity to govern Albemarle.That little commonwealth of less than 3,000souls had in the mean time been enjoying thesweets of uncurbed liberty, when there was noking in Israel, and every man did what was rightin his own eyes.
