Page 2 HAKOL bnaitikvah.org February 2012 Sh’vat 8 - Adar 6 5772 Volume 33 issue 6A Message From Rabbi Robert WolkoffThe Supreme Court recently issued a ruling that hassweeping implications for questions of religiousfreedom. Keeping a long story short, what theCourt said was that when anti-discriminationlegislation bumps up against religious freedomissues, religious freedom wins.I won’t go into the details, or defend the Court’sdecision. I will point out, though, that the Court’sdecision was unanimous—and how often doesthat happen in these fractious times!! Why theunanimity? Because the Court understood exactlyhow precious the “free exercise” of religion is toboth the American past and the American future. The existence of a realm outside the bounds ofnormal political discourse cannot help but have ahumbling and restraining influence on our society.Simply put, the Court’s perspective goes tounderscore that the experts, the professionalpoliticians, the “authorities,” don’t know it all, despite their elitist pretentions. And, perhaps evenmore important, the Court’s perspective goesto underscore how truly crucial the free exercise ofreligion is. It is assumed to be an endless font ofinspiration that serves our nation well.So….we all know what happens when we don’t doenough exercise—and the exercise of our religionis at least as important as all those sit-ups andaerobics. All too often, we practice our Judaismwithout a sense of vitality and commitment. Ourtradition is treated as a matter of habit, a routinethat at best has some nostalgic resonance. Rarelydo we even acknowledge that the most profoundideas in the world concerning the value ofhumanity and the audacity of morality come fromthe wellspring of Torah. And rarer still do we liveour lives attempting to personally epitomize theTorah’s ideals. It is no coincidence that the Continental Congressdeclared, “… true religion and good morals arethe only solid foundations of public liberty andhappiness.”The founding fathers said it. G-d said it. Who elseneeds to say it before we get the message?Shalom,Rabbi Robert L. Wolkoff

Page 3 HAKOL bnaitikvah.org February 2012 Sh’vat 8 - Adar 6 5772 Volume 33 issue 6Shabbat Shira for All Generations! From the Desk of Cantor Bruce RockmanThe most incredible feeling as a cantor is to hear theresponse of the congregation. More than positivereinforcement for me, it becomes a recognition thatwe are uniting to express ourselves to the heavens, and what a heavenly sound it is when I hear andexperience you singing with me. I first wrote this forShabbat Shira 2004 and you continue to shower mewith joy every time we sing and pray together. This year, our annual Shabbat Shira Lunch and SingAlong following our service on February 4th, wewill honor the music of L’dor Vador. We will singpopular songs that were performed on our bima byour three most prolific guests, Neshama Carlebach,Craig Taubman, and Debbie Friedman z”l.Since her untimely passing early last year, the legacyof Debbie and her music has been growing. Like somany others who had met her and spent time withher in her last year of life, we at B’nai Tikvah heardDebbie sing her last original melody. She neverrecorded it professionally, but it’s a melody that shebelieved would become better known than her healingprayer, Mi Shebairach. The perspective that we arrive at when we mourn theloss of someone close to us or another special personcan become a special gift to the survivors. Generally,it seems to me, we are able to look past theirshortcomings and see their accomplishments aboveall else. This time of deep sadness is tinged withpride, joyous memories, and a sense of clarity.Hopefully when we experience profound loss and askthat the person’s memory be a blessing, we becomeinspired by the legacy of our loved ones good deeds. For the past few months, those of you who have attendedour Friday night Kabbalat Service have joinedme as we softly sing Debbie Friedman’s ShalomAleichem, the hymn traditionally sung to welcomethe Sabbath angels. I am far from the only personplanning to highlight this melody on Shabbat Shira. On January 11 th , Debra Nussbaum Cohen of TheDaily Jewish Forward wrote that Rabbi Joy Levittand Cantor Angela Buchdahl, of Manhattan’s CentralSynagogue, are planning to reach out to every clergymember in the Reform, Conservative, and Reconstructionistmovements — urging us to sing Debbie’sversion of “Shalom Aleichem” on February 3 and 4.I am excited and not surprised about this effort. As Istated, we have been getting to know this melodyfor some tine. In addition, Jerry Silver of The Sonsof Tikvah Band has written a hauntingly beautifularrangement that we were honored to perform at ourInterfaith Service this past November. As we have demonstrated with our Rejoice Festivalsand The L’dor Vador concerts, our goal is to helpB’nai Tikvah build bridges and strengthen both ourJewish and our community connections. WhenCraig Taubman asked us all to sing with him, wejoined him without hesitation, just as we did withDebbie Friedman and Neshama Carlebach. Now,WE know the songs. When you come to our events, the community joins us, brothers and sisters, singingand dancing with joy.Once again, invite your friends to join us onShabbat Shira for one of our most lively anduplifting Shabboses of the year. And the highlight ofthe day may not be the music after all; Stacey andMarci are planning one of their Shabbat Shira LunchExtravaganzas.“Worship the Lord in gladness; come before Godwith joyous song…For Adonai is good and his love is eternal andAdonai’s faithfulness endures for all generations.”Psalm 100B’simcha, with Joy!Cantor Bruce Rockman

Page 6 HAKOL bnaitikvah.org February 2012 Sh’vat 8 - Adar 6 5772 Volume 33 issue 6ANOTHER VIEWPOINTA Father – My FatherSeptember 20, 2010, Father’s Day. By 11AM I hadreceived two phone calls and a card from my kids sofar, and got to thinking of my own father. Mother’sDay was a big deal in the 1930’s of my youth. I’mnot sure Father’s Day had been invented, but I don’tremember any talk of it in my day.Relationships vary between parents and childrenin different cultures. In my experience, European fatherswere sterner with their children than Americanbornfathers. The Papa was the boss. He broughthome the money and he made the rules. His effortsprovided the shelter, food, clothes, medicine, booksand whatever else it took to survive, especiallyduring the Great Depression days. Although myPop (as he was called) was literate in 5 or 6 languages,he and I almost never talked. I mean talk asin dialogue. It wasn’t until I was in my later HighSchool years that we had anything that could becalled a conversation.Sometimes Pop would make a suggestion and othertimes a statement. If my brothers or I had a request, itwas answered with a yes or no. Don’t get me wrong,my father was a kind and thoughtful person. He waswell liked by the extended family on both sides andvery popular with his friends and landsmen. He justdidn’t know how to relate to children, other than tosmile and pinch their cheeks, which could makesome little ones avoid him. Each of us has a memory gate. Some larger, somesmall and narrow. Some open easily, some slowlyand creaking and reluctantly, will swing open to letothers in or out. Papa would tell stories of his life inthe shtetel, of before he came to America after WorldWar I. Almost always, it would be at night, especiallyon Friday night after lights out. Then he wouldtell us stories about his experiences in the RussianArmy during World War I. The sounds of shellswhistling overhead during a barrage, or the rat-a-tatof machine gun fire. He told about the time that hespent as a German prisoner of war at a coal mine andwas promoted to be clerk when they found out thathe was literate.Pop also told stories about growing up as a boy inthe little shtetel of Russia/Poland (the flexibleborder moved according to who was in power atthe moment). One of his funniest stories was aboutthe time that the Rabbi had to leave his class to goout unexpectedly. The classroom was in the Rabbi’shome. He warned the eight and nine year old boysthat they were expected to study and be on their bestbehavior while he was out.No sooner was the Rabbi out, when the boys, sounused to being on their own, reverted to being boys. There were no schoolyards to play in. In those daysand so they began to look for ways to amuse themselvesoutside the classroom. The end result? Whenthe Rabbi’s wife opened her flour bin, imagine hersurprise when out jumped a mouse.Boys will be boys, won’t they?Aaron RosloffBT DaytimersBoard meetingTuesday, February 7at 1:00 pmRegular MeetingTuesday, February 21at 1:00 pmThere is no charge for this eventAll adults are welcomeAt B’nai TikvahCOME AND JOIN US

Page 10 HAKOL bnaitikvah.org February 2012 Sh’vat 8 - Adar 6 5772 Volume 33 issue 6YOU’RE INVITED TO DINNER!by Eve CukorHello, my name is Eve Cukor, I'm 12 yearsold, and I’m working on a new program thatbesides being my Bat Mitzvah project, isalso something I hope will become a longstandingtradition at Congregation B'NaiTikvah. This new program is called, "BeOur Guest" and the idea is to create a databasethat pairs families and/or individualsfrom our community who would like to attenda Friday night shabbos dinner, or aholiday event such as a Passover Seder, thatis being held in the home of a CBT congregant. My goal is that this program will helppeople in our community who may be newto the area or to CBT, or do not have friendsor family nearby, to get to know each otherbetter, see different customs, try differentfoods, and also enable everyone to meetnew people and have a good time. Whetheryou (and your family) would like to attend adinner or whether you want to invite a "newfriend" to attend a dinner at your home --(and you are welcome to sign up for both) --you can easily add your name to our databaseby visiting my website. To kick off theprogram, we'll be signing up people forwould like to attend a PASSOVER SEDERat one of our congregant's homes. To signup to attend a seder or to invite a family orindividual to your own seder, please contactme and I will get in touch with you. Youcan contact me at:www.beourguestcbt.weebly.com, or youcan email me directly atbeouguestcbt@gmail.com (that's: be ourguest cbt at gmail.comThank you, Eve.Trying to find the wordsAs I sit here thinking about what I want to say, many words are running through my mind. Here are a few: compassionate, selfless, dependable, helpful, patient, kind, available. Allof these words define the same thing, theBikur Cholim committee of congregationB’nai Tikvah.I broke my leg in May of 2011. Since then Ihave received help with whatever I haveneeded by the amazing people who make upthis committee. They have cooked for me,shopped for me, taken me to and from physicaltherapy, and so much more. As it turns out myfracture has not healed and now requires surgery.I have been told by members of BikurCholim not to worry, they will be there forwhatever I need.If you have never been in the position I was in,which was mostly helpless, you do not knowwhat a gift it is to know there are people whoare ready to do whatever you need. Thatknowledge is so comforting. I can not expressmy gratitude. There is one other person I would like to mention. She has taken me to every Dr. appointmentand showed me how to get in and out ofmy condo, where there is a step. She has shownme how to deal with situations that felt overwhelmingto me. Her name is Rachel Ruchlinand most of you know her.Between her and the committee, I have made itthis far. Knowing they will be there for whatcomes next has given me peace of mind. Itmakes the idea of surgery just a little less scary.I thank each and every person who has helped,I could not have gotten this far without you.Although the committee’s primary purpose isto visit the sick and injured, I urge you tocontact them if you, or anyone you know,is in need of help while healing. Hopefullyyou will never need them but, rememberthey are ready to help if you do.Thank you for taking the time to read this.Jeryl Roller

Because of our efforts, a total of 32 peoplewill enter the new year with basic things we all takefor granted: winter coats, boots, clothing, blankets, pillows, dishes, silverware--and the list goes on andon. On December 21, six vans and a pick-up truck cameto my home and loaded their vehicles with all thepurchased goods. One of the social workers toldme, as she was looking at all the gifts for a particularfamily, that at the beginning of the school year, shebought a pair of uniform pants for one of the boysbecause he was sharing one pair with his brother! She emphasized that our gifts will make a significantdifference in this family’s daily life. This year the Needy Family Program became a synagogue-wideevent. The nursery school donated theTzedakah they collect weekly and the religiousschool collected personal hygiene items for the sponsoredfamilies as well as for other families in need inthe New Brunswick area.
