In addition, the outgoing Dean’s Club Board of Trustees
President, Dr. Patricia Rothwell (’84), received a plaque of
appreciation from the incoming President, Dr. Doug Walsh
(’78), while the outgoing Dental Alumni Association President,
Dr. Mike Kern (’93), was similarly recognized by the
incoming alumni President, Dr. Bryan Edgar (’76).
Dr. Tim DeRouen, Interim Dean of the
School of Dentistry, delivered brief remarks at
the dinner and introduced Dr. Joel Berg, who
became permanent Dean on Aug. 15. Dr. Berg
and Dr. Rothwell surprised Dr. DeRouen with
a glass plaque of appreciation for his accomplishments
and efforts as Interim Dean.
Dr. Shapiro was honored for more than
30 years of distinguished service to the
School of Dentistry as a faculty member, researcher
and fund-raiser. The former Chair
of the Department of Orthodontics raised
more than $1 million to establish that department’s
Moore/Riedel Professorship. He also helped
raise funds for a $1.3 million renovation of the Orthodontics
clinic that was completed in the summer of 2011. He
and Dr. Vincent G. Kokich (’71, ’74 Ortho) established the
Kokich/Shapiro Endowed Scholar Fund, which supports

an annual visit by scholars in orthodontics or related disciplines.
Dr. Kokich, himself a Distinguished Alumnus, presented
the Honorary Lifetime Award to Dr. Shapiro.
Dr. Spear, the founder and director of Spear Education,
is regarded as one of the top figures in continuing dental
education and is a former president of the
American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry.
As a founding member of the Northwest
Network for Dental Excellence, he was one
of the early advocates of interdisciplinary
dentistry. Together with Dr. David Mathews
(’74 Perio), who helped present his award,
and Dr. Kokich, he has lectured around the
world for more than a quarter-century to
teach dentists this practice model.
Featured entertainment at the dinner was
provided by Seattle tenor Anthony Kalil.
Guests also enjoyed piano music by Chris
Vincent and harp music by Susan McLain.
Next year’s event will be held on April 27 at the newly
remodeled Husky Union Building on the UW campus. The
HUB has been closed for nearly two years for extensive
renovations.
