In addition, <strong>the</strong> outgo<strong>in</strong>g Dean’s Club Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees<br />

President, Dr. Patricia Rothwell (’84), received a plaque <strong>of</strong><br />

appreciation from <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g President, Dr. Doug Walsh<br />

(’78), while <strong>the</strong> outgo<strong>in</strong>g Dental Alumni Association President,<br />

Dr. Mike Kern (’93), was similarly recognized by <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>alumni</strong> President, Dr. Bryan Edgar (’76).<br />

Dr. Tim DeRouen, Interim Dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>, delivered brief remarks at<br />

<strong>the</strong> d<strong>in</strong>ner and <strong>in</strong>troduced Dr. Joel Berg, who<br />

became permanent Dean on Aug. 15. Dr. Berg<br />

and Dr. Rothwell surprised Dr. DeRouen with<br />

a glass plaque <strong>of</strong> appreciation for his accomplishments<br />

and efforts as Interim Dean.<br />

Dr. Shapiro was honored for more than<br />

30 years <strong>of</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>guished service to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong> as a faculty member, researcher<br />

and <strong>fun</strong>d-raiser. The former Chair<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Orthodontics raised<br />

more than $1 million to establish that department’s<br />

Moore/Riedel Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship. He also helped<br />

raise <strong>fun</strong>ds for a $1.3 million renovation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Orthodontics<br />

cl<strong>in</strong>ic that was completed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>of</strong> 2011. He<br />

and Dr. V<strong>in</strong>cent G. Kokich (’71, ’74 Ortho) established <strong>the</strong><br />

Kokich/Shapiro Endowed Scholar Fund, which supports<br />

Dr. Kokich, himself a Dist<strong>in</strong>guished Alumnus, presented<br />

<strong>the</strong> Honorary Lifetime Award to Dr. Shapiro.<br />

Dr. Spear, <strong>the</strong> founder and director <strong>of</strong> Spear Education,<br />

is regarded as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> top figures <strong>in</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g <strong>dental</strong><br />

education and is a former president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

American Academy <strong>of</strong> Es<strong>the</strong>tic <strong>Dentistry</strong>.<br />

As a found<strong>in</strong>g member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Northwest<br />

Network for Dental Excellence, he was one<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early advocates <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

dentistry. Toge<strong>the</strong>r with Dr. David Ma<strong>the</strong>ws<br />

(’74 Perio), who helped present his award,<br />

and Dr. Kokich, he has lectured around <strong>the</strong><br />

world for more than a quarter-century to<br />

teach dentists this practice model.<br />

Featured enterta<strong>in</strong>ment at <strong>the</strong> d<strong>in</strong>ner was<br />

provided by Seattle tenor Anthony Kalil.<br />

Guests also enjoyed piano music by Chris<br />

V<strong>in</strong>cent and harp music by Susan McLa<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Next year’s event will be held on April 27 at <strong>the</strong> newly<br />

remodeled Husky Union Build<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> UW campus. The<br />

HUB has been closed for nearly two years for extensive<br />

renovations.<br />
