Dr. Ana Lucia Seminario has been
named Interim Chair of Pediatric
Dentistry, replacing Dr. Joel
Berg as he became Dean on Aug.
15. In her new capacity, she will
direct The Center for Pediatric
Dentistry.
Dr. Seminario, trained as both
a pediatric dentist and epidemi-

of Pediatric Dentistry, as well as a
member of the Council on Clinical Affairs for the American
Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She was Graduate
Research Director of the Pediatric Dentistry Residency
Program until December 2011.
A search for a new permanent department chair has
begun, with two candidates having visited the UW for interviews:
Dr. Rebecca Slayton, Professor and Chair of the
Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of
Iowa, and Dr. Jessica Lee, Professor and Graduate Program
Director of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at
the University of North Carolina. No timetable has been
set for the announcement of the new chair.

Dr. Johan Aps, a pediatric dentist
and radiologist, has joined
Pediatric Dentistry as Clinical
Associate Professor. He and his
family recently moved to Seattle
from Belgium, where he received
his DDS, MS in Pediatric
Dentistry and PhD from Ghent
University. He earned his MS in
Dental and Maxillofacial Ra-

diology from the University of
London.
Dr. Aps was Professor and Senior Clinical Consultant at
Ghent University and Ghent University Hospital Dental
School. He specialized in pediatric dental care, dental care
for people with disabilities and dental and maxillofacial radiology,
including sialography. He is an expert on intra-osseous
local anesthesia.

Dr. Simon Lin and Dr. Mariella Garcia have been named codirectors
of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry predoctoral
program. Dr. Daniel Cook, Clinical Professor of
Pediatric Dentistry, has been named Clinic Chief at The
Center for Pediatric Dentistry.

Dr. Marcio da Fonseca, Law-Lewis
Professor and Director of the
Pediatric Dentistry Graduate
Program, is co-associate editor
of the newly published Clinical
Cases in Pediatric Dentistry (Wiley-
Blackwell, 380 pages, paperback,
$99.99).
The book, edited by Dr. Amr
Dr. Marcio da Fonseca M. Moursi, Chairman of the
Department of Pediatric Dentistry
at New York University’s College of Dentistry, applies
theory and practice to real-life pediatric dentistry
cases in a clinically relevant format, supporting the new
trend in case-based and problem-based learning. Topics
range from infant oral health to complex pulp therapy.
Dr. Amy L. Truesdale, Clinical Assistant Professor of
Pediatric Dentistry at NYU’s College of Dentistry, is coassociate
editor.

Dr. Richard Darveau, Chair of Periodontics, was a co-author
of the paper “A Low-Abundance Biofilm Species Orchestrates
Inflammatory Disease through the Commensal Microbiota,”
which was published in November by the journal
Cell Host & Microbe.

An article by Dr. Peter Milgrom of Oral Health Sciences and
Megan Kloetzel and Dr. Colleen Huebner of the UW School
of Public Health received the Best Review Article award
from the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health. The article,
“Referrals for Dental Care During Pregnancy,” first
appeared online in February 2011.
