member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council on Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Affairs for <strong>the</strong> American<br />

Academy <strong>of</strong> Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong>. She was Graduate<br />

Research Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong> Residency<br />

Program until December 2011.<br />

A search for a new permanent department chair has<br />

begun, with two candidates hav<strong>in</strong>g visited <strong>the</strong> UW for <strong>in</strong>terviews:<br />

Dr. Rebecca Slayton, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong> at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong><br />

Iowa, and Dr. Jessica Lee, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Graduate Program<br />

Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong> at<br />

<strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> North Carol<strong>in</strong>a. No timetable has been<br />

set for <strong>the</strong> announcement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new chair.<br />

Dr. Johan Aps, a pediatric dentist<br />

and radiologist, has jo<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong> as Cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />

Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor. He and his<br />

family recently moved to Seattle<br />

from Belgium, where he received<br />

his DDS, MS <strong>in</strong> Pediatric<br />

<strong>Dentistry</strong> and PhD from Ghent<br />

University. He earned his MS <strong>in</strong><br />

Dental and Maxill<strong>of</strong>acial Ra-<br />

diology from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong><br />

London.<br />

Dr. Aps was Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Senior Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Consultant at<br />

Ghent University and Ghent University Hospital Dental<br />

<strong>School</strong>. He specialized <strong>in</strong> pediatric <strong>dental</strong> care, <strong>dental</strong> care<br />

for people with disabilities and <strong>dental</strong> and maxill<strong>of</strong>acial radiology,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g sialography. He is an expert on <strong>in</strong>tra-osseous<br />

local anes<strong>the</strong>sia.<br />

Dr. Simon L<strong>in</strong> and Dr. Mariella Garcia have been named codirectors<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong> predoctoral<br />

program. Dr. Daniel Cook, Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong>, has been named Cl<strong>in</strong>ic Chief at The<br />

Center for Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong>.<br />

Dr. Richard Darveau, Chair <strong>of</strong> Periodontics, was a co-author<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> paper “A Low-Abundance Bi<strong>of</strong>ilm Species Orchestrates<br />

Inflammatory Disease through <strong>the</strong> Commensal Microbiota,”<br />

which was published <strong>in</strong> November by <strong>the</strong> journal<br />

Cell Host & Microbe.<br />

An article by Dr. Peter Milgrom <strong>of</strong> Oral Health Sciences and<br />

Megan Kloetzel and Dr. Colleen Huebner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UW <strong>School</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Public Health received <strong>the</strong> Best Review Article award<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Journal <strong>of</strong> Midwifery & Women’s Health. The article,<br />

“Referrals for Dental Care Dur<strong>in</strong>g Pregnancy,” first<br />
