Dr. Blake Barney named 2012 Wands Fellow<br />
Dr. Blake Barney, now enter<strong>in</strong>g his<br />
second year <strong>of</strong> post-doctoral study<br />
at our <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>, has been<br />
named <strong>the</strong> 2012 David H. Wands Endowment<br />
Fellow <strong>in</strong> Graduate Prosthodontics.<br />
He is <strong>the</strong> 12th recipient <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> $10,000 award.<br />
Dr. Barney, a native <strong>of</strong> Idaho, received<br />
his DDS <strong>in</strong> 2011 from The<br />
Ohio State University and his undergraduate<br />
degree <strong>in</strong> biology <strong>in</strong> 2007<br />
from Brigham Young University -<br />
Idaho. His earlier awards <strong>in</strong>clude an<br />
Achievement Award<br />
from <strong>the</strong> American<br />
Academy <strong>of</strong> Oral and<br />
Maxill<strong>of</strong>acial Radiology<br />
<strong>in</strong> 2011 and a<br />
Barlow Fellowship for<br />
outstand<strong>in</strong>g academic<br />
research participation<br />
<strong>in</strong> 2010, both at Ohio<br />
State.<br />
“I’m grateful and<br />
excited,” Dr. Barney<br />
said, add<strong>in</strong>g that he<br />
chose <strong>the</strong> UW Graduate<br />
Prosthodontics<br />
program <strong>in</strong> part because<br />
<strong>of</strong> its close work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
relationship with<br />
Graduate Periodontics.<br />
“There’s an awesome understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>of</strong> how <strong>the</strong>y go toge<strong>the</strong>r, and <strong>the</strong><br />
treatment plann<strong>in</strong>g is really comprehensive,”<br />
he said.<br />
Dr. Barney said he grew <strong>in</strong>terested<br />
<strong>in</strong> dentistry while on a church mission<br />
<strong>in</strong> Eastern Canada. He met a family<br />
that <strong>in</strong>cluded a <strong>dental</strong> student, and<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir conversations piqued his fasc<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />
In <strong>dental</strong> school, he <strong>in</strong>itially had<br />
no <strong>in</strong>tention <strong>of</strong> specializ<strong>in</strong>g, but that<br />
changed.<br />
“I really enjoyed denture class<br />
– wax<strong>in</strong>g, mak<strong>in</strong>g everyth<strong>in</strong>g look<br />

nice. … I wanted to learn how th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
work, and try everyth<strong>in</strong>g for myself,”<br />
he said. He also took close note<br />
<strong>of</strong> school activities related to <strong>the</strong><br />
American College <strong>of</strong> Prosthodontists’<br />
Awareness Week.<br />
Dr. Barney and his wife, L<strong>in</strong>dsey,<br />
have three young children. The couple,<br />
who are avid runners, have completed<br />
two full and four half-marathons. Dr.<br />
Barney performed missionary service<br />
<strong>in</strong> Canada for The Church <strong>of</strong> Jesus<br />
Christ <strong>of</strong> Latter-day Sa<strong>in</strong>ts from 2001<br />

to 2003, and for two years taught a<br />
sem<strong>in</strong>ary class for high school students.<br />
He said that his career plans<br />
<strong>in</strong>clude a mix <strong>of</strong> private practice and<br />
teach<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Dr. Wands (Pros ’72), who was<br />
a UW <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong> faculty<br />
member <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Prosthodontics<br />
for 22 years, launched <strong>the</strong><br />
fellowship <strong>in</strong> recognition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shortage<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>dental</strong> school educators and to<br />
<strong>of</strong>fer f<strong>in</strong>ancial assistance to those <strong>in</strong>terested<br />
<strong>in</strong> academic dentistry.<br />
He made a $500,000 commitment<br />
for <strong>the</strong> fellowship to <strong>the</strong> UW <strong>in</strong> 1998.<br />
In addition, he made a major gift to<br />
<strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Maryland <strong>in</strong> 1994 to<br />
establish <strong>the</strong> fellowship <strong>the</strong>re, and has<br />
also made a bequest for $250,000 to<br />
<strong>the</strong> Academy <strong>of</strong> Prosthodontics Foundation<br />
to fur<strong>the</strong>r encourage careers <strong>in</strong><br />
prosthodontics education.<br />
In 1967, Dr. Wands graduated<br />
with honors from <strong>the</strong> Baltimore College<br />
<strong>of</strong> Dental Surgery, University<br />
<strong>of</strong> Maryland, and afterward served<br />
for seven years with <strong>the</strong> U.S. Public<br />
Health Service. He <strong>the</strong>n<br />
returned to <strong>the</strong> University<br />
<strong>of</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton as a halftime<br />
faculty member and<br />
taught both undergraduate<br />
and graduate Prosthodontics,<br />
achiev<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rank <strong>of</strong><br />
Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Pr<strong>of</strong>essor.<br />
In addition to endow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> fellowship, Dr. Wands<br />
is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UW<br />
<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong> Dean’s<br />
Club Board <strong>of</strong> Directors<br />
and was <strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong><br />
form<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> UW Graduate<br />
Prosthodontic Alumni As-<br />
sociation. In May 1999, he<br />
was honored by <strong>the</strong> Dean’s<br />
Club with its highest award,<br />
Honorary Lifetime Member. He is<br />
a Life Member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pacific Coast<br />
Society for Prosthodontics and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Academy <strong>of</strong> Prosthodontics, which<br />
this year bestowed on him its Dist<strong>in</strong>guished<br />
Service Award, its highest<br />

“If we don’t have teachers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>dental</strong> school, <strong>the</strong>n we don’t have<br />
graduates. It’s that simple,” Dr. Wands<br />
has said. Now retired from private<br />
practice <strong>in</strong> Olympia, Wash., he is an<br />
avid saltwater and freshwater fisherman<br />
as well as a master gardener.
