<strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s direction<br />
Dr. Berg beg<strong>in</strong>s his deanship with a clear sense <strong>of</strong> how he believes<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong> must evolve to thrive. He frames<br />
this with three important elements: vision, process and culture.<br />
The vision, he says, is to produce a dentist for <strong>the</strong> year 2025.<br />
In large part, this is dictated by <strong>the</strong> changes <strong>in</strong> <strong>dental</strong> and medical<br />
education and <strong>in</strong> <strong>dental</strong> accreditation standards. There is a<br />
trend toward <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong>terpr<strong>of</strong>essional education (<strong>the</strong> UW<br />
<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e has already begun add<strong>in</strong>g oral health to its<br />
curriculum), plus even more emphasis on evidence-based dentistry<br />
and ethical standards.<br />
Dean Berg also believes that while restorative dentistry will<br />
rema<strong>in</strong> a cornerstone <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession, dentistry will <strong>in</strong>corporate<br />
more elements <strong>of</strong> medical management, prevention and<br />
<strong>in</strong>novation.<br />
“If we design a curriculum around <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dentist <strong>of</strong><br />
2025, students must be culturally sensitive and understand technology.<br />
They’ll need a strong sense <strong>of</strong> medical management and<br />
strong ethics,” he says. “In <strong>the</strong> past, we’ve been more focused<br />
on <strong>dental</strong> health. Now we need to be more focused on overall<br />
health, with <strong>dental</strong> health as a component.” He also believes <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>School</strong> must improve pre-doctoral students’ general dentistry<br />
skill set, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g pediatric dentistry, so <strong>the</strong>y’re better equipped<br />
to practice <strong>in</strong> remote areas.<br />
Curriculum revision will be a top priority, Dean Berg says,<br />
with little time to lose. The <strong>School</strong> must complete its accreditation<br />
self-review <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next three years, with a CODA site review<br />
visit scheduled for 2016.<br />
At <strong>the</strong> same time, <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> must address a lack <strong>of</strong> clearly<br />
def<strong>in</strong>ed processes <strong>in</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istration and operations, he says, especially<br />
<strong>in</strong> regard to cost efficiency.<br />
“We need to look at every aspect <strong>of</strong> how we do bus<strong>in</strong>ess,” he<br />
says. “I believe very strongly <strong>in</strong> structure and process.”<br />
While <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> needs to be more centralized <strong>in</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istrative<br />
<strong>fun</strong>ctions such as purchas<strong>in</strong>g and human resources, he<br />
also says, “People need to realize that I have no <strong>in</strong>tention to<br />
destroy departmental structures. We still need <strong>the</strong> separation<br />
<strong>of</strong> academic expertise <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> way we teach our students and<br />
our <strong>in</strong>teraction with pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>dental</strong> organizations. But we<br />
should always look at how we can be more efficient and work<br />
as a unified team <strong>of</strong> faculty.”<br />
In a new era <strong>of</strong> reduced state <strong>fun</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g, Dean Berg says he<br />
would like <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> to make better use <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r resources and<br />
potential partnerships, start<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> UW itself.<br />
The UW, as he po<strong>in</strong>ts out, is a $1 billion-a-year research<br />
operation, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong> should tap <strong>in</strong>to that<br />
expertise. He also sees a need to create more bus<strong>in</strong>ess partnerships,<br />
especially <strong>in</strong> technology-rich Seattle. “I’d like <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />
to be more <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> product development research, more<br />
Sonicares. It shouldn’t be by happenstance,” he says.<br />
Dean Berg also wants to renew and streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s<br />
Gett<strong>in</strong>g Down to Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
ties to its <strong>alumni</strong>, who he says <strong>in</strong>clude some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world’s f<strong>in</strong>est<br />
cl<strong>in</strong>icians and researchers. “We have one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most loyal,<br />
passionate groups around. … They love <strong>the</strong> school, <strong>the</strong>ir education,<br />
what it’s done for <strong>the</strong>ir lives.<br />
“I <strong>in</strong>tend to <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong>m, and I want <strong>the</strong>ir voice <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />
They’re a tremendous asset. … They’re go<strong>in</strong>g to help me and<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs we want to do, because <strong>the</strong>y want<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> to get better.”<br />
He also wants to make sure that students know how important<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are to <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s success. “I’ve talked to a lot <strong>of</strong><br />
students, especially s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> deanship announcement. They’re<br />
concerned that <strong>the</strong>y’re not <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conversation. We<br />
have several ‘customers,’ and students are our most important.<br />
… It’s all about creat<strong>in</strong>g a good dentist. That’s our prime objective.”<br />
The task forces he creates to tackle top issues such as<br />
Dr. Berg plans to devote a day every o<strong>the</strong>r week to practice at The<br />
Center for Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong>.<br />
curriculum will have student representation, he says.<br />
Dean Berg also wants to keep his hand <strong>in</strong> practice, as he did<br />
while lead<strong>in</strong>g Pedo. It won’t be easy, but he plans to spend a day<br />
every o<strong>the</strong>r week chairside at The Center for Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong>.<br />
Those who have seen Dean Berg’s management style at close<br />
hand have a good idea <strong>of</strong> what to expect from his deanship. “The<br />
emphasis will be on outcomes,” says Dr. Nelson. “With <strong>in</strong>put<br />
from key players, Joel will develop a set <strong>of</strong> objectives. He will<br />
<strong>the</strong>n put <strong>in</strong> place milestones and methods <strong>of</strong> measur<strong>in</strong>g performance.<br />
I envision that he will focus on <strong>the</strong> customers, [which<br />
are] <strong>the</strong> <strong>dental</strong> student and <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton.”<br />
Says Sara Paul, Dean Berg’s former program manager at The<br />
Center: “He’s <strong>the</strong> total package, and just what <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Dentistry</strong> needs to move forward <strong>in</strong>to excit<strong>in</strong>g times ahead.”<br />
