TheHebrew Ladies Benevolent Societywas formed in 1884 and 20 yearslater took up the challenge of raisingfunds for the construction of apermanent synagogue. Financialsupport for their efforts came fromJewish settlers and others from as faraway as Globe, Bisbee, and Nogales.On June 20, 1910, amidst greatcommunity celebration, the grandlodge of Arizona Masons laid theTemple’s cornerstone; inauguralservices were held on Eriv RoshHashanah, October 3, 1910.The Jewish History Museum(Historic Stone Avenue Temple) wasthe first Jewish house of worshipestablished in the Arizona Territory.It is located in the downtown area at564 South Stone Avenue. TheTemple was an integral part of thereligious corridor that developedalong Stone Avenue between the late1800’s and the early 1900’s.
