CHAPTER III.INDIAAND CHIXA.*'I HAVE seen," says Apollonius <strong>of</strong> Tyana, "the Bralimius <strong>of</strong> Indiadwelling on the earth, <strong>and</strong> not on the earth, living forlilied withoutfortifications, possessing nothing, <strong>and</strong> yet everything." The" dwelling on the earth, <strong>and</strong> not on the earth " alludes to theirbeing frequently levitated.Apollonius had journeyed into Hindostanto seek admittance to the treasury <strong>of</strong> Indian wisdom. Thesupermundane attainments <strong>of</strong> the Brahmins were displayed to himimmediately that the object <strong>of</strong> his mission became known. Hewas brought into the presence <strong>of</strong> the chief sage <strong>of</strong> the caste, whoaddressed him in the following words :— " It is the custom <strong>of</strong>others to inquire <strong>of</strong> those who visit them who they are, <strong>and</strong> forwhat purpose they come ; but with us the fii'st evidence <strong>of</strong> wisdomis that we are not ignorant <strong>of</strong> those who come to us."Thereuponthis clairvoyant recounted to Apollonius the most notable events <strong>of</strong>his life ;named the families both <strong>of</strong> his father <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> his mother ;related what the philosopher had done at iEgae ; described bjwhatmeans Damis had become the companion <strong>of</strong> his journey, <strong>and</strong>repeated all that they had heard <strong>and</strong> talked <strong>of</strong> by the way. Awed<strong>and</strong> humbled by knowledge so unearthly, the astonished Greekearnestly besought to be admitted to its secrets. After the usuallength <strong>of</strong> waiting he became duly illuminated, <strong>and</strong> returning,astonished Europe with his piercing clairvoyance <strong>and</strong> wondrouspowers <strong>of</strong> healing.Lecturing at Ephesus the words suddenly diedupon his tongue. He bent forward amazedly, <strong>and</strong>, gazing intospace, exclaimed, " Strike ! atrikc the tyrant !" Then, turning tothe bewildered audience, he continued, " Domitian is no more ;
