Principal’s Message
January 2009 Provincial Exam
results are outstanding!
Over the past few years, it has been very gratifying to recognize student achievement in many
areas of our school. This academic achievement is particularly noticeable in standard testing at
both district and provincial levels. The Graduation Program requires all students to write five
provincial exams through Grade 10 to 12, and we are pleased to report the following results
from those who wrote January 2009 Provincial Exams:

Recognizing Students
Congratulations to Carter Glass for reaching the ‘top 18’ in the CanWest Spelling Bee a few
weeks ago. This is an outstanding result considering it was his first experience at this event.
Also, congratulations to Mitch Villebrun for winning the Carpentry GOLD award at the Regional
Skills Canada Competition.
HVAC and other Capital Projects
A few years ago, the District began a systematic upgrade of HVAC systems in many Langley
schools. Reasons for the upgrades included WorkSafe requirements, equipment age, and
energy conservation. REMSS will be receiving an upgrade of its HVAC system over this next
year and work on this project will commence later in the spring. Presently, the school is
undergoing an upgrade of lighting. The upper floor was completed last year and the main floor
will be completed within the next few months. The school will also be receiving capital funds to
upgrade washrooms and other areas in the school.
School Growth Plan
We are presently preparing the School Growth Plan for 2009/10. The School Planning Council
has agreed that we will continue to work on two areas: Transition from Grade to Grade and
Transitions to Post-Secondary.
Please don’t hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions or concerns. We always
look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely yours,
Dave Michel
This group of students will be trained as multicultural peer counselors and they will mentor
grade 9-12 new students who are coming to our school next year. They will help us establish a
positive and respectful school culture.

TRACK & FIELD
Mountain’s Track and Field team is off and running! There are a number of new faces who are
taking advantage of the training provided by coaches at the LSS track facility. Training days are
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:00 – 4:30 pm. The athletes are training hard in all events in
preparation for their first local meet on April 16 th . If there are any students who would still like to
join, it is not too late! See Ms. McKinnon or Mr. Vanderhoek.
SCHOOL LIAISON OFFICER
Cst. Vonna Fitzgerald is our School Liaison Officer. She is available to parents, staff
and students on a drop-in or appointment basis.
STUDENT ABSENCE
Parents can now take advantage of our ‘absence line’. You can call in any time and leave the
information on the absence line. Please call if your child is going to be away for the day, part of
the day or tardy. 604-888-3033. Choose option 1. Please leave the date, name of student and
reason for being absent.
LIBRARY
From the Library: HELP! HELP! Parents, please remind students to bring back library
books and texts once they're finished with them. We have other students waiting to read the
library books and we are sometimes short of texts if students finish the semester and don't
return them. The books are often buried in lockers or under beds at home.
The end of the year has consequences for those with lost books and outstanding office fees-
the yearbook is withheld, transcripts are withheld for moving students, grade 12 graduation
celebration is withheld, and next year's texts are withheld for returning students. If this seems
rather drastic come in sometime and see our lists of students with missing library books and text
books - it will cost the school thousands of dollars if we don't get them back!
This is especially a problem when students are leaving the school for another school outside of
our district. Parents/home-stay parents - you have the final responsibility for making sure texts
that are in your home are returned to the school if your student has left the house. Believe it or
not, parents have thrown texts away or taken them to thrift stores. Some of our texts are worth
$160 each. PLEASE WORK WITH US!!
Many thanks to the parents who come in here with arms full of books - it is appreciated!

GRADUATION TRANSITIONS 12
All components of GT 12 are due this month. Ms Larsen has been scheduling exit interviews
(the final component of GT 12) with students.
Melanie Charlton was the 10th REMSS student to complete GT 12.

Ms. Larsen – was awarded the Premier’s Award for Teaching
Excellence in the Skills Training and Career Preparation category.
There are moments when a whole lot of personal history coalesces
into one symbolic act, forcing you to think back over an eventful
career with a sense of pride and humility. For Ms. Larsen accepting
the Premier’s Award for Teaching Excellence in the Skills Training
and Career Preparation category was one of those defining
moments. “It is like a lifetime achievement award, it validates
everything I have done over the years.” Ms. Larsen is quick to add that she recognizes the
support and collaborative energy of her colleagues. Teaching in the 21 st century to a generation
of kids who have grown up with computer games, iPods and cell phones, offers a different set of
rewards and challenges, compared to teaching in the early ‘80’s. School Board Chair Joan
Bech said “Over the years Ms. Larsen has arranged, monitored and evaluated hundreds of
students on work experience placements throughout the province. They, their parents and this
Board are grateful for teachers with Ms. Larsen’s dedication, skill and enthusiasm. Thank you
Ms. Larsen for your devotion to students.”
"Parent Connect" is R.E. Mountain's web service that allows parents direct access to the information
about their children's course work, assignments, attendance and other information. If you are
interested in accessing your child's school information on-line please contact Mr. Frank Flanagan by
REMINDER TO PARENTS
When you drop off items or lunches for your student at the office, please make sure the
student’s name is on them. Items get lost easily when there is no name on a
lunch or item left at the office.
Do you need to take your student out of class some days? Please make sure your son or
daughter has a note to show the teacher in order to get out of the classroom and also call the
office to ensure we update the attendance to show an excused absence.
SCHOOL DANCES
Dances are a wonderful opportunity to assist in developing a positive sense of community at a
school. With that in mind, we have guidelines for behaviour at Mountain Secondary so that
everyone is able to enjoy a comfortable and safe environment. There will be both staff and
parental supervision at the dance and the expectation is that students will behave in manner
that is appropriate to any school event. Please review the guidelines of the dance with your
son/daughter. Please also ensure that students are picked up right at 9:30 p.m. We want to
ensure all students get home safely. Students should not be walking home from school at night.
YEARBOOK
If you missed out on ordering a yearbook before Christmas, you can have your name put on a
waiting list at the office. If there are any extra yearbooks available in June you will receive one
and pay for it then - $50.00
A Message from you R.E. Mountain PAC regarding R.E. Mountain Secondary
SchoolExpansion.
Did you know that:
• Despite declining provincial enrolment, R.E. Mountain enrolment has been growing
steadily and will continue to grow?
• The Langley School District has received assurances from the Ministry of Education that
facility needs in the rapidly growing Willoughby area will be given priority in coming
rounds of the Ministry’s capital grants approval process?
• R.E. Mountain is built for 725 students, but currently has more than 900?
• In the last two years, 500 students have been added to the Willoughby community?
• There are no spaces in other schools for Mountain students?
• Mountain currently has eight portables, with additional portables planned to meet preexpansion
growth needs?

• Mountain is designed to facilitate its expansion and two Langley schools with the same
plan have already been successfully expanded?
Given these facts, your school PAC feels it is important to ensure that the Provincial
Government and the Langley Board of Education remain aware that R.E. Mountain expansion
needs must be considered a high priority in their planning processes.
If you would like to help ensure the Provincial Government and the Langley Board of Education
continue to recognize R.E. Mountain expansion as a high priority, please consider sending a the
attached letters* via email to School Board chair, Joan Bech, and MLA(s) Rich Coleman and/or
Minister Mary Polak. R.E. Mountain is in MLA Coleman’s electoral area, but some of the
school’s catchment area (south of 72 nd ) is in Minister Polak’s area. The letters require only that
you add your signature and identify yourself appropriately as either the “parent” or “guardian” of
an R.E. Mountain student. The email addresses are contained in the letters. If you have any
questions about how to forward the letters, please contact Karen Leach - karenpac@shaw.ca
If you would like your letter to be part of the letter-count your PAC will keep to track interest in
this issue, please copy PAC President Karen Leach at karenpac@shaw.ca when you send your
letter(s).
Mary Polak
Minister of Healthy Living and Sports
mary.polak.mla@leg.bc.ca
Dear Minister Polak:
I am writing to you as the parent of an R.E. Mountain Secondary School student to request the school’s expansion.
The Strategic Context section of The Ministry of Education’s current Service Plan notes that enrolment in the
province’s K-12 education system has declined by approximately 56,000 students. Despite declining provincial
enrolment, R.E. Mountain enrolment has been growing steadily and will continue to grow.
On November 10, 2008, the Langley School District reported that the District “has received assurances from the
Ministry of Education that facility needs in the rapidly growing Willoughby area will be given priority in coming
rounds of the ministry’s capital grants approval process.” Regarding a new elementary school in the Yorkson area
and the expansion of R.E. Mountain Secondary, Deputy Minister of Education James Gorman was quoted as saying:
“While neither request has been ranked as a high priority in the past by the ministry, given new information
provided by the district, it is anticipated that these requests will be rated as high priority by the ministry in the
board’s next capital plan submission.”
I would like to be ensured that this is the case for Mountain Secondary, as the expansion is required.
R.E. Mountain is built for 725 students. Enrolment is currently more than 900 and is continuing to increase.
Langley Township has identified Willoughby, Mountain’s catchment, as a community that will see thousands of
new housing units approved in the coming years. In the last two years, 500 students have been added to Willoughby
community’s enrolment.
As you know, other Langley Schools have recently been reconfigured to optimize their enrolment. During this
reconfiguration, options for redistribution of R.E. Mountain students were considered. With this optimization review
complete, Mountain remains well beyond capacity and growing. There are no spaces in other schools for Mountain
students.
In effort to address some of Mountain’s overcrowding issues, Langley District’s contribution to the new Langley
Events Centre secured opportunities for R.E. Mountain students to use Events Centre facilities. This does not,
however, address the need for classroom space. Mountain currently has eight portables. Additional portables are
planned to meet pre-expansion growth needs. In addition, Mountain continues to reduce the number of international
students at the school to address capacity issues.
Fortunately, Mountain is a school that is designed in a way that will facilitate its expansion. I understand that two
Langley schools with the same plan have already been successfully expanded.
Given these facts, I hope and trust that R.E. Mountain expansion will be identified as a “high priority” as new capital
budgets area developed this year, as suggested by Deputy Minister Gorman. I appreciate your attention to this
matter and look forward to hearing about any progress made toward making R.E. Mountain expansion a high
priority. I understand that though R.E. Mountain school is not in your electoral area, students from your electoral
area are in Mountain’s catchment.
Thank you for your attention to this issue.
