In 1965, skirt lengths rose several inches above the knee, and that style<br />
became known as the miniskirt. However, it was not until the late 1960s<br />
that short skirts were widely worn by women. The miniskirt reached<br />
beyond a youth-inspired fashion in<strong>to</strong> a major international trend. During<br />
the mid-1970s, women returned <strong>to</strong> wearing longer skirt lengths such as<br />
the midi or maxi. Again in the 1980s and 1990s, short skirts were popular.<br />
How did this revival happen?<br />
In the mid-1970s, pants and pantsuits were acceptable day wear for<br />
women almost anywhere. Just a decade before, however, women were not<br />
allowed admission in<strong>to</strong> famous New York City restaurants wearing pants.<br />
Who paved the way for the widespread acceptance of women wearing<br />
pants outside the home, for business and leisure?<br />
