The Moaners play rock. Not
alt.country (whatever that
is), not punk, not screamo,
not hardcore, slowcore, sadcore,
noisecore, twee pop, not art-rock or
neo-prog; just rock. This is appropriate
because the two women that make
up The Moaners, guitarist and vocalist
Melissa Swingle and drummer/
guitar/vocalist Laura King, also rock.
Well, okay, it is kind of southern rock,
but it is bad ass southern rock.
Both veterans of the Chapel Hill
music scene, Melissa Swingle, with
her guitar, saw and fantastically deadpan
Mississippi drawl, has fronted
Trailer Bride through five albums and
a handful of singles, all drenched in
moody, southern macabre and country
twang. Meanwhile Laura King
has pounded the drums for Grand
National. It is one of many examples
of the good fortune that we have living
in the Triangle that they are now
bringing the best of both their musi-
Melissa Swingle has maintained the
clever and depressing lyrical imagery
and deceptively simple songwriting
she honed with Trailer Bride and
added it to the distorted, sludgy slide
guitar from that band’s most rocking
moments, while also, as the new band
name implies, retaining the lonesome
wail of her voice. She has also,
it seems, acquired a loop pedal she
uses to good effect to occasionally fill
out the duo’s sound. Along with King,
who is one hell of a drummer, supertight
and not afraid to hit things hard,
especially her cool red, white and blue
kit, The Moaners are a welcome addition
of talented rock and roll women
to the testosterone fueled southern
rock sound. The Moaners were
kind enough to offer a brief moment
of their time for questions and pleasant
conversation. Plus they didn’t
even make fun of me for asking stupid
questions.
