Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People<strong>Evaluation</strong> <strong>of</strong> a <strong>RIGHT</strong> <strong>blether</strong>promoted dialogue in the classroom about human rights in othercountries:“a <strong>RIGHT</strong> <strong>blether</strong> did extend their understanding that rights area global issue and that what is seen as the norm in somecountries has to be hard fought for in others” (Primary schoolteacher);children and young people felt their views were being listened to andcould be used to shape future policy: in addition to the views <strong>of</strong>children and young people from focus groups, three-quarters (75%) <strong>of</strong>survey respondents agreed as a result <strong>of</strong> a <strong>RIGHT</strong> <strong>blether</strong> children andyoung people felt their views were being listened to, and 69% agreedthat children and young people feel a <strong>RIGHT</strong> <strong>blether</strong> has enabled themto tell the Commissioner how to shape future policy concerning them(Table 11);increase in knowledge <strong>of</strong> and engagement in decision-makingprocesses amongst children and young people: 70% <strong>of</strong> surveyrespondents agreed that a <strong>RIGHT</strong> <strong>blether</strong> developed confidenceamongst children and young people that they have a right to say if theyare not happy with something (Table 11). Other qualitative responsesincluded:“The young people now use the ballot boxes to make decisionsabout their café and they abide by the results” (Youth worker);“It has helped lay the foundations for other citizenshipactivities later in school life e.g. the nominations for theScottish Youth Parliament” (Secondary school teacher).30
