Through discussion,demonstration <strong>and</strong> studio work, students will learn to simplifythe picture plane in order to create expansive <strong>and</strong> expressivepaintings based on their exploration <strong>of</strong> color. Color, shape <strong>and</strong>line become the forms <strong>and</strong> subject while students apply colortheory <strong>and</strong> design principles to their compositions. Emphasiswill be placed on developing sensitivity to the abstractelements <strong>of</strong> rhythm, movement, balance, unit <strong>and</strong> surfacetexture. Students may work in the medium which best suitsthem (oil, pastel, acrylic or watercolor) <strong>and</strong> should have someprior painting or drawing experience.DRAWING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAINCourse ID: FA0170Instructor: Linda Jo RussellTHREE SESSIONSFriday – Sunday, August 17, 18 & 19; 9:30 AM – 5 PMNON-CREDIT Tuition: $275In this h<strong>and</strong>s-on workshop, students learn to draw withtechniques based on the work <strong>of</strong> Betty Edwards, author<strong>of</strong> the renowned book Drawing on the Right Side <strong>of</strong> theBrain. The course begins with an introduction to the theory<strong>and</strong> follows a step-by-step process specifically designed forindividuals who have never drawn before. The fundamentalpremise is that anyone can learn to draw with properguidance. Students develop their perceptual skills (ability tosee) through exercises focusing on contour lines, positive/negative space, sighting <strong>and</strong> light/shadow relationships. Thisworkshop combines lecture <strong>and</strong> studio exercises in a nurturingenvironment. Lunch breaks will be scheduled; students maybring their lunch to class.SILKSCREEN WORKSHOPCOURSE ID: FA0003Instructor: Celina MancurtiONE SESSIONSaturday, June 23; 10 AM – 1 PMNON-CREDIT Tuition: $95 (includes all materials <strong>and</strong> suppliesto make <strong>and</strong> take 4 placemats)This is a special opportunity for crafters <strong>of</strong> all levels to geth<strong>and</strong>s-on experience learning silk-screen printing withoutspecial or expensive equipment. On muslin fabric, you willexplore Celina’s assortment <strong>of</strong> screens, colors <strong>and</strong> techniquesfor printing. While Celina shares tips for successful screenprinting, you will print four linen placemats stitched withtiny pockets to hold h<strong>and</strong>written messages. Vintage <strong>and</strong>rescued buttons, sewed on by h<strong>and</strong>, will provide the finaldetails to your project. You will leave the class with a finishedproject, plus many pieces <strong>of</strong> printed muslin (perfect for smallprojects) that you will make during the class. All printing <strong>and</strong>sewing supplies, <strong>and</strong> blank recycled paper note cards, will beprovided.
