Studentswill create dramatic and sculptural works of art based ontheir keen observation of light and shadow while executingpaintings entirely in tones of gray. Subjects will include still-lifeand portraiture; the class is open to both new and experiencedstudents who wish to practice this classic painting technique.The final classes will introduce glazing techniques to addluminous color to the completed greyscale painting.CONTEMPORARY COLOR FIELD PAINTINGCOURSE ID: FA0234Instructor: Donna CusanoSIX SESSIONSWednesday, June 6 – July 11; 6 PM – 9:15 PMNON-CREDIT Tuition: $230; 2 CEUSExplore color in its purest sense! Through discussion,demonstration and studio work, students will learn to simplifythe picture plane in order to create expansive and expressivepaintings based on their exploration of color. Color, shape andline become the forms and subject while students apply colortheory and design principles to their compositions. Emphasiswill be placed on developing sensitivity to the abstractelements of rhythm, movement, balance, unit and surfacetexture. Students may work in the medium which best suitsthem (oil, pastel, acrylic or watercolor) and should have someprior painting or drawing experience.DRAWING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAINCourse ID: FA0170Instructor: Linda Jo RussellTHREE SESSIONSFriday – Sunday, August 17, 18 & 19; 9:30 AM – 5 PMNON-CREDIT Tuition: $275In this hands-on workshop, students learn to draw withtechniques based on the work of Betty Edwards, authorof the renowned book Drawing on the Right Side of theBrain. The course begins with an introduction to the theoryand follows a step-by-step process specifically designed forindividuals who have never drawn before. The fundamentalpremise is that anyone can learn to draw with properguidance. Students develop their perceptual skills (ability tosee) through exercises focusing on contour lines, positive/negative space, sighting and light/shadow relationships. Thisworkshop combines lecture and studio exercises in a nurturingenvironment. Lunch breaks will be scheduled; students maybring their lunch to class.SILKSCREEN WORKSHOPCOURSE ID: FA0003Instructor: Celina MancurtiONE SESSIONSaturday, June 23; 10 AM – 1 PMNON-CREDIT Tuition: $95 (includes all materials and suppliesto make and take 4 placemats)This is a special opportunity for crafters of all levels to gethands-on experience learning silk-screen printing withoutspecial or expensive equipment. On muslin fabric, you willexplore Celina’s assortment of screens, colors and techniquesfor printing. While Celina shares tips for successful screenprinting, you will print four linen placemats stitched withtiny pockets to hold handwritten messages. Vintage andrescued buttons, sewed on by hand, will provide the finaldetails to your project. You will leave the class with a finishedproject, plus many pieces of printed muslin (perfect for smallprojects) that you will make during the class.
