City Celebration, Inc., nationally known as the producing organization<br />

of the acclaimed San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, has commenced doing<br />

business as WORLD ARTS WEST, A Celebration of Traditional Dance &<br />

Music effective this month. The unanimous decision by the Board of Directors<br />

and staff to undergo the name change and mission statement was done so in<br />

order to more accurately reflect the current and future programming of the 17<br />

year old not-for-profit organization.<br />

The organization's new mission statement reads: World Arts West<br />

presents and promotes world dance and music that reflects America's<br />

Through performance opportunities, educational activities and cultural<br />

exchange, we seek to inspire innovation and keep alive traditions of the world<br />

around us. 11<br />

World Arts West's (WA W) <strong>1995</strong> producing activities include the<br />

nationally renowned San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, scheduled for nine<br />

performances June 2--18, at the historic Palace of Fine Arts. Thematic<br />

programming for this year's Festival include: "A Celebration of the Pacific<br />

islands;" "Strong Men/ Strong Women/;" "Passages: Dances From the J.ife<br />

Cycle;" and "Global Celebration: A 50th Anniversary Salute to the United<br />

Nations." The 17th annual Ethnic Dance Festival is an official participant in<br />

the United Nations 50th Anniversary San Francisco Celebration.<br />

Other World Arts West activities include a new arts education<br />

program for Bay Area children grades K --6 entitled People Like Me, to be<br />

presented at the Ft. Mason Center Cowell Theater March 28--31. In the fall,<br />

World Arts West will inaugurate the Encounter Series, an adult program of<br />

three different internationally acclaimed dance and music companies (Uganda,<br />

Brazil and Indonesia) scheduled for the Cowell Theater. During the year,<br />

World Arts West will present educational lectures on trends in world dance and<br />

music: outreach performances into select Bay Area communities: costume<br />

exhibits: and guest artist residencies at local colleges.<br />

Please note: World Arts West receives funding for its activities from<br />

a variety of sources including the Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax<br />

Fund, the California Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.<br />

However, federal and state support of the arts & humanities is currently under<br />

threat of being eliminated by members of the new U.S. Congress. Please<br />
