City Celebration, Inc., nationally known as the producing organization
of the acclaimed San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, has commenced doing
business as WORLD ARTS WEST, A Celebration of Traditional Dance &
Music effective this month. The unanimous decision by the Board of Directors
and staff to undergo the name change and mission statement was done so in
order to more accurately reflect the current and future programming of the 17
year old not-for-profit organization.
The organization's new mission statement reads: World Arts West
presents and promotes world dance and music that reflects America's diversiW
Through performance opportunities, educational activities and cultural
exchange, we seek to inspire innovation and keep alive traditions of the world
around us. ''
World Arts West's (WAW) 1995 producing activities include the
nationally renowned San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, scheduled for nine
performances June 2--18, at the historic Palace of Fine Arts. Thematic
programming for this year's Festival include: "A Celebration of the Pacific
Islands;,, "Strong Men! Strong Women!;" "Passages: Dances From the Life
Cycle;" and "Global Celebration: A 50th Anniversary Salute to the United
Nations." The 17th annual Ethnic Dance Festival is an official participant in
the United Nations 50th Anniversary San Francisco Celebration.
Other World Arts West activities include a new arts education
program for Bay Area children grades K--6 entitled People Like Me, to be
presented at the Ft. Mason Center Cowell Theater March 28--31. In the fall,
World Arts West will inaugurate the Encounter Series, an adult program of
three different internationally acclaimed dance and music companies (Uganda,
Brazil and Indonesia) scheduled for the Cowell Theater. During the year,
World Arts West will present educational lectures on trends in world dance and
music; outreach performances into select Bay Area communities; costume
exhibits; and guest artist residencies at local colleges.
Please note: World Arts West receives funding for its activities from
a variety of sources including the Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax
Fund, the California Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
However, federal and state support of the arts & humanities is currently under
threat of being eliminated by members of the new U.S. Congress. Please
consider making a generous donation to World Arts West by using the enclosed
envelope, and help us to maintain quality arts programming for you and your
families.
PRE-CON REPORT
First things first, thanks for supporting Syndi-CON with your membership. We appreciate your support.
Since our emphasis this year is Highlander, it is a given that many of you will have and/or buy swords. The
Cathedral Hill is to be considered holy ground- if you draw your sword we own it (at least for the duration of
the convention). If, as some of you have requested, you want your sword autographed by any of the guest,
you must be escorted by security and the sword must be given to the guest with in its scabbard. If you ignore
these requests you will be barred from the convention.
Second, for those of you coming into the bay area a bit of necessary information.
WEATHER
Remember Mark Twain's comment on San Francisco- ... the coldest winter ojmy life was a summer I spellt in
San Francisco... It can be true, especially if the fog really rolls in from the bay. Unlike other locales the fog
here is wet and cold. For those of you from more northern climes- a sweater should be enough, those from
warmer southern climes might want to bring a coat- especially if you plan to do any sightseeing or go out to
any of the nearby restaurants after dark.
HOTEL
The hotel is located on Van Ness Avenue between Geary and Post. The parking garage ($12.00/day for hotel
guest, $6.00 for 1-Day convention guest) is located under the hotel.
If you are driving to the convention you'll want to get to Van Ness Ave. if you have AAA they will provide
great directions. If you need more help give us a call.
Airport Shuttles
For those of you flying in- there are several ways to the hotel from the airport. A cab costs approximately
$30.00 (ouch) and we recommend using one of the many shuttle services which are readily available- just
follow the signs at the airport to find them. These cost from $10 to $12 per person. If you want to arrange
for a SuperShuttle before you leave home their San Francisco phone number for trips from SFO is (415) 871-
7800.
BART
For all of you local folks whc. plan on taking BART you can either get off at the Embarcadero stop and take a
cable car up to Van Ness (4 blocks from the hotel), or go to the Van Ness stop and catch a bus or hike up Van
Ness to the hotel (I 0 blocks).
Work Outs
If you are one of the m2ny of us who are into sweating -unfortunately the hotel doesn't have a weight/workout
room. However they do have an agreement with the 24-hour Nautilus located one block away. With your
room key you c2n g"·' ;n :0r $5.00 24 hours a day. ·
Scottish Country Dancers
Welcome to world of science fiction media con! It is nice
to return the welcome I received at Mountain View Class.
Let me thank you for particjpating at Syndi-Con 95. The
stage performance will be on the mezzanine level, while the
audience participation will be upstairs on the 4th floor in
the hotel's Japanese Pavilion--aka Scottish Heritage Hall or
Clan Hall. The stage will be at least 28' x 42'. Two small
conference roams on the mezzanine level will be changing roams.
They will not be closely secured. There should be a separate
guest/participate registration line. Your badges will be done
with group name-you can add your own. They will be necessary
to get into other areas of the con. We hope you will come and
enjoy the con and bring friends to help us raise money for the
AIDS charities. The badges are good for all three days.
Please do not transfer them.
The Red Thistle is now scheduled For 2:30 pm Saturday with
audience dancing afterwards. On Sunday with the Dunsmuir, we
had to reverse the order to avoid the draw oF actor Q/A session.
The audience participation will be at noon and stage performance
at 1pm. Jo Hamilton and Friends will have audience dancing on
Friday evening 7 to 8 pm, before the mixer. Dan Otis and Carolyn
Cummings will be the Hall problem solvers during the con. They
will have a table in the Hall.
The St Bridget's Guild and the 77th Regiment will also be
at the con. The guild has taken over the Hall area, but has
been instructed to leave room for the audience dancing. We
do not know how many members will be interested in the audience
dancing versus tl1e other con acti1ities. It has not been
scheduled against what we know would be a big draw, but there
is enough going on that some things are scheduled at same time.
It is better than the usual 4 to 8 tracks of programming at
a con or Highland games.
The casino night is in need of dealers, as some of planned
ones have dropped out. Dan Otis will be doing dealer training
Saturday afternoon, if any of you are interested. Alex Wong is
the one in charge, he can be reached at the con voice mail
510-888-2414. Heather Alexander will be performaning at both
the mixer Friday evening and at the casino night.
My first job and main one during the con is as staff
photographer. It is to provide a scrapebook for the participates
and workers, since they do not get a chance to see the whole
con. I would like to take some posed group pictures, before
or after your performance. I enjoy sharing the pictures and
would be willing to arrange a visit to your meeting so you can
see the pictures if interested. I do take reprint requests.

"Flatfoot and Buck
Dancing,"' ""Big Circle"'
and "Freestyle"
Artistic Director and
Choreographer: Dana
DeSimone
These dances have their roots in Irish step dance, English clogging and Native
American and African American steps. Buck dancing is a predecessor to modern tap
dancing and was done at parties, corn shuckings and molasses makings. They are a
capella and rely only on hands and feet for instrumentation. Big circle dancing involves
more people and freestyle encourages individual style and expression of movement to
the music.
These dances came from the people of North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, West
Virginia, Alabama and Georgia. Costuming is very simple and reflects the poverty of
immigrant Appalachia.
The music is a mixture of Scaijish, Irish and English melodies influenced by African
American rhythms. The dancing is very syncopated and has a heavy down beat.
Cornmashers of San Francisco are a local favorite and have performed numerous times
in the Ethnic Dance Festival.
Dancers: Joe Costa, Dana DeSimone, Holly Earl, Usa Framiglo, J.P. Huka, Leslie Jackson, Kalia Kliban,
Nicole Martinovich, Patti Whitehurst
Musicians: Kathy Hirsch, guitar; Marty )ara, fiddle; Susan Sullivan, fiddle; Undo Wilson, banjo
The older Highland dances of Scotland are traditionally performed with bagpipes.
Outdoor games were held to find the best musicians, dancers and athletes. Country or
ballroom dance was performed indoors, usually accompanied by solo fiddle or small
group. With larger spaces this century, the piano was added.
"Robert the Bruce" is a sprightly jig named for one of Scotland's early kings. "Western
Stars" demonstrates grace, style and strength using traditional figures that make full use
of the stage. "The Moulin Dhu" is a running dance from the Western Islands depicting
the mill and its wheel. It remains a legacy of Scandinavian invaders who conquered
parts of the west in the tenth century. In "The Double Foursome Reel," the dancers
weave in and out using the traveling step to create an endless braid. "Reel of the Black
Cocks" is a dance of sheer exuberance based on a children's game.
The kilt is the ancient everyday wear of the Scot. The woven tartan patterns represent
the clan, or extended family, of the wearer.
Detailed demonstrations of basic steps, 13 figures, and 9 full
Order in PAL or NTSC from TACSOUND per their current price list. Also
available directly from Red Thistle Dancers, c/o Fred Sommer, 360 Bowfin
Street, Foster City, CA, USA 94404. Price is US $25.95 PAL or US $21.95
NTSC, plus shipping and handling of US $3.50 surface or US $6.50 air.
Please include payment in US$ or, at current exchange rates, in ¥, £,A$,
NZ$, French, Swiss, or Belgian Francs with your order.
Within the USA we are charging, $22.95, which includes sales tax. We had been
charging $1.50 for shipping and handling. This does not cover our costs. Mailing
single tapes, averages $3.00. Adding packing materials (padded envelopes or small
boxes) adds another $.30 to $.50. We should therefore add $3.50 to cover our costs.
To be consistent, if asked what the price of a Red Thistle Video is, please respond:
$22.95 plus $3.50 for shipping and handling within the USA, or $26.45 total.
Thank you.
Fred Sommer
PS: Sales of the NTSC version have been brisk. We will have to think about
reordering another 100 tapes in the beginning October time period.

12:30-1:30 Lunch Break. You might plan for your group to bring their own lunch, as there is a nice,
small park area just outside the theater, and of course Plaza Park is just across the
street.
Stage
Reminder- The stage dancing area is 26 feet wide, and 18 feet deep (plus the 8 foot extension on the front).
Plan ahead.
Program
Concert begins at 2:00pm, and we need to start on time. The Red Thistle musicians will provide music
before the concert, and their piper will probably play just outside the theater.
Curtain
We plan to use the main curtain at the beginning and again at the end of each half of the concert. ln
between the groups, we wiH use blackout to make transitions.
I would like to have a short finale, which might go like this:
• The Red Thistle Dancers come in from stage left; make a line; take their bows; move back.
• Ambiente Espaii.ol come in from stage right; make a line; take their bows; move back.
• Their musicians and singer come in from stage right and take bow.
• Ensemble International from stage left; make a line; take their bows; move back.
• Stilt dancers come in from stage right; bow and keep moving across the stage.
• Kw1 Shin from stage right; make a line; take their bows; move back.
• Group Directors please come in with your group and take your own bow, after the group's.
• Everybody come forward and wave.
• Curtain
Being in the finale means your dancers would have to stay in costume until the end. I don't think we'd
need a finale rehearsal, if we keep it simple.
If some or all of your dancers would like to go around to the lobby to greet the departing audience, that
would be nice, but remember that we have to be out of the theater as soon as possible.
- Tickets and Money
As nearly as J can tell, ticket sales are going fairly well. In order for me to know where we stand, and get
box office set up for September 10, I need to have money for the tickets you have sold AND the unsold
to by 6. People wanting tickets can still call me through September 9 to put
hckets m W1ll Call to be piCked up at the box office no later than 1:45 on September lOth.

American composers. They perform all over the Bay Area, including an annual concert,
benefit performances, and recently were dancers/choreographers for Opera San Jose's
