ABOUT THE GROUPS Ambiente Espanol is a multicultural dance and music performing company with a focus on the arts influenced by the cultures of the Iberian Peninsula. Their repertoire includes flamenco, Spanish regional and popular dances, Spanish-style ballet and classical, Philippine dances, Peruvian dances, and fusion dances set to music of Soutl:l American composers. They perform all over the Bay Area, including an annual concert, benefit performances, and recently were dancers/choreographers for Opera San Jose's "Carmen" They bridge together diverse cultures with roots in Spanish music and dance by preserving, teaching, and performing all Spanish dance forms and related dance mediums, and make this knowledge available to both children and adults. Their Director is Juana Christiano. • (408) 241-1193 Ensemble International performs international folk dance, mostly from Western Europe and North America. They began in 1966 and are fully co-sponsored by the City of Swu1yvale. Over the years they have performed for many commwtity events, schools, churches, in concerts, have made three performing tours to Europe, and have hosted eight dance groups from Austria, Italy, and Scandinavia. They have benefited from instruction by master teachers from numerous countries and have acquired an extensive collection of ethnic costumes and music. They do dances from Switzerland, France, Austria, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia, Poland, America and French Canada, as well as mid -19th Century ballroom dances in period costumes, and they are in demand to perform at Oktoberfests each fall. The Directors/Choreographers/Teachers are Marian & Ned Gault • (408) 395-8026 Kun Shin Dancers began in 1985 with the goal of reinforcing in children their Chinese heritage of dance and music and to share this culture with others. Classes were to adults and include teachers from Mainland China and Taiwan, with a repertoire which rw1s from classical and traditional folk dances to ballet, with dancers who range in age from 4 to 74. They have performed for many community functions and in concerts, and enthusiastically display their beautifully costumed dances and music wherever possible. Fei-o Lee, their Director /Choreographer, has dedicated her life to dance and music and also serves as Teacher. • (408) 867-3769 The Red Thistle Dancers perform throughout the Bay Area and beyond for a variety of audiences. They appear at Scottish Highland Games, community events, in concerts, for schools, and cultural affairs. They present Scottish country and highland dances in traditional dress and usually with live music, often featuring the bagpipes. Their aim is to present high-quality Scottish dance to promote an awareness of cultural identity, to e.ducate and entertain. They have danced many times for the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival and have produced a Scottish dance teaching video, aided by a Community Art Fund grant.
