It involvesthe application of an electric field to a samplewhilst simultaneously recording spectroscopicabsorption features, and has particularapplication for monitoring redox-coupledreactions to allow in-situ spectroscopic analysisof electro-generated intermediatesand/orproducts.The Specac Spectroelectrochemical transmissioncell is an FTIR accessory encompassing athin-layer optically-transparent electrodestructure to facilitate electrochemicalspectroscopicmeasurements.The cell comprises two CaF2 windows separatedby a 100 or 200 micron sample layer, where goldgrid working and counter electrodes, and asilver reference electrode, are photolithographicallyimprinted on the surface of the front windowin contact with the sample. Grid structures with aperiod of 20 lines/mm are available as standard.Perfluoroelastomer seals are used to ensurechemical compatibility with a range of organicsolvents, and the demountable cell design allowsfor ease of cleaning. The cell is air-tight, has asmall sample volume (ca 0.3 – 0.6 ml), and canbe used in an evacuated environment.Specac’s Spectroelectrochemical transmissioncell follows a modular design concept to fit with arange of Specac sample holders.
