Tanzania 2013
We are excited to announce that another Tanzania project is well underway. We have 20 excited students
who are going to embark on this two- part adventure in 2013.
The first part entails providing water to another primary school in the Karatu area of Tanzania. We
have raised over $8000 this year towards the construction of Rainwater Harvesting Tanks! We’ve
worked Jets games and concerts at the MTS Center, hosted a bbq, sold Sobey’s cards and held coffee
and cinnamon bun sales. We anticipate construction of the tanks to begin this summer.
The second part of our adventure entails students traveling to Karatu, Tanzania to see the Kildonan-
East project in action! We will meet
the students who attend the primary
school, participate in a cultural exchange,
and learn about farming
practices, healthcare and other aspects
of life in a developing country.
We will attend the local markets and
of course participate in a safari!
2012-13 will be a busy and exciting
year as we continue to raise funds
and prepare for our trip. There is
still space for five more students to
participate on what past students
have called “the experience of a
lifetime!”

Message from Administration Counsellors’
We would like to thank students, staff, parents and our community
for a fabulous school year. It seems hard to believe that the school
year is coming to a close when it feels as if it has just begun. The
students at Kildonan-East Collegiate have been true Reiver Believers
throughout the school year as evidenced by the amazing stories
on our divisional webpage, our KEC webpage, our newsletters, the
media and of course all of the wonderful acts of kindness and support
they demonstrate for each other all year long! As we reach the
homestretch it is imperative that we continue to support and encourage
our students to focus on their studies for the final few
weeks so that they can have the success they deserve. Keep up the
hard work and your dreams will become a reality!
Our students have earned many academic and extra-curricular successes
this past year. We are proud of all of the students who competed
in the Skills Canada Competitions and congratulate them on
their success. Our Student Recognition Evening saw over 360
awards being presented to a fabulous group of students. We also
celebrated a Provincial Banner in grade 9 boys’ basketball and have
had many of our teams competing at the Provincial level. Well
done! Thanks to all of our athletes who celebrated their successful
year at our Athletic Banquet!
We have had wonderful participation from our students in the areas
of citizenship, humanitarianism and global awareness activities. We
have sponsored and raised money for over 25 different organizations
and our students have volunteered thousands of hours of their
time to make our community a better place! Our students have been
honoured for their hard work at every turn and they continue to
show us why Kildonan-East Collegiate students are the best in the
province.
We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the staff, students,
parents and community for an excellent year. It takes a community
to build an awesome high school and you have the pleasure
of having the best high school in the province in your backyards!
Thanks for your continued support! We wish you an excellent summer
vacation, safe journeys and a well-deserved rest.
13th Annual Show and Shine Show
On Saturday May 26th Kildonan-East Collegiate held its 13th annual "Show and Shine" car show. It was a great event that featured
good weather, over 80 of the finest restored and custom cars as well as today's latest technology in the auto industry. We were fortunate
to have a fully electric car on display and the owner, Ross Redmond, to speak about its virtues. As well, we had many happy car show
participants drive away with some nice prizes as provided by some of our school's vocational departments. Our suppliers and local businesses
helped immensely. Next year will be our 14th year and we intend to make it even better!
Electric Car at Kildonan-East Auto Tech
Kildonan-East Collegiate’s Automotive Technology students were fortunate to see first hand one of the newest innovations in green
transportation. Mr. Ross Redmond owns the first Mitsubishi i-Miev delivered in Canada. He brought it to the KEC Show and Shine car
show on May 26 where it drew a lot of interest. Electric cars are a passion for him and he has researched and driven almost all electric
and hybrid vehicles available to North America. He graciously agreed to come back to the school where he gave a presentation to the
Grade 11 automotive students and spent over an hour answering questions and taking a few for a virtually silent ride around the KE
parking lot. Thanks, Ross, for sharing your time and passion with our students.
Mr. Dentry is Awarded the CAP Award for Excellence in
Teaching High School Physics
Page 5
The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) is a national
network of physicists working in educational, industrial and
research settings. Each year, CAP presents the Award for
Excellence in Teaching High School Physics. The Award for
Excellence honours physics teachers in Canadian high
schools who have a good understanding of their subject and
who possess an exceptional ability to communicate their
knowledge and understanding in such a way as to motivate
their students to high academic achievement in physics.
Only five teachers are honoured across the country annually,
and only one in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the
Northwest Territories. This year CAP honoured and recognized
the excellence of Brian Dentry of Kildonan-East Collegiate.
CAP’s press release announcing the recipients of the 2012
Awards for Excellence referred to Mr. Dentry’s longstanding
accomplishment of propelling students to excellence.
The announcement read: “In addition to regularly
producing winners of high school CAP prize exams, having a
very high percentage of his students enter graduate work in physics, and giving a large number of teaching workshops in physics over the years, Mr.
Dentry has had a special concern in encouraging members of under-represented groups to enter physics.”
The Award for Excellence was formally presented to Mr. Dentry on May 30 at KEC’s Student Recognition Evening by Dr. Gabor Kunstatter, vicepresident
of CAP and Professor of Physics, University of Winnipeg. The award highlights Mr. Dentry’s long career as an educator and adviser to
generations of students. He is a deserving recipient of this prestigious award, and the KEC community is proud of his past accomplishments and his
continuing commitment to his students’ success.
Mrs. Ramsay is Awarded the University of Manitoba Student Teachers’ Recognition
Award
Congratulations to Mrs. C. Ramsay for being honoured by the University of Manitoba Student
Teachers’ Recognition Award.
This award gives outstanding graduating students the opportunity to honour those teachers who
have made important contributions to their education. Recognizing that academic growth and development
occurs over many years, the outstanding student is asked to recognize two teachers; one
from Kindergarten to Grade 12 years and one from their years at The University of Manitoba. The
students speak about the impact their honoured teachers have made on their lives.
Congratulations Mrs. Ramsay!

MUSIC NEWS…..
Spring Music Concert
May 23rd was our annual concert for the Band and Choral programs at KEC. There
were performances from the Choral group, Resonance, Band, Jazz Band and a Saxophone
Quartet. The concert was a huge success. Students played very well and had a
great time presenting their music that they’ve worked so hard on all year. We would like
to say thank you to our two student candidates from the U of M who have helped out in
the music programs this year: Ms. Kristi Hardman and Mr. Brendan Burnell. Great work
to Mrs. Isaac-Martens, the choir and the bands sounded amazing, and to our accompanist
Katie Erickson for a job well done. Congratulations to Madison Wery for winning a
scholarship to International Music Camp this summer, funded by the Music Fundraising
group at KEC. It was an all-around great evening of entertainment.
KEC Students Perform at the Roger Waters Concert
“We Don’t Need No Education”:
not exactly the
message that teachers usually
want to send out to students,
but when Mrs. Isaac-
Martens was asked to prepare
a group of students to
perform at “The Wall Live”
concert with 15 of our local
students, she asked “when
& where?” Students from
B.E. Glavin Elementary,
Valley Gardens Middle
School and Kildonan-East
Collegiate’s choir programs
were prepared in three rehearsals
to sing and dance
to the popular song. Students
were excited to meet
Roger Waters in person at the Sound Check and were treated to a pizza party backstage before the show where they got to meet
the guitarist/vocalist Jon Carin. It was definitely the experience of a lifetime for our students: Shifa Mohideen, Rhael McGregor,
Madison Wery, Duncan Cox and Jung-Soo Moon. Thanks to Mrs. Ridd, our Divisional Music/Arts Co-ordinator, for arranging
the opportunity for us!
Page 8
This year has been a year of celebrations in the Life Skills
program. In second semester, some of the Life Skills
students were integrated into various vocational classes
and extra-curricular activities such as: Autobody, Culinary
Arts, Information, Communication Technology and
Guitar Club. Individual academic success continues to
be an important part of the Life Skills program and we
are proud of our students’ accomplishments. This year
the students worked hard in their Math and English classes.
They enjoyed learning about and creating musical
instruments in Science and are still hard at work researching
countries and comparing them to Canada to present
at their Geography fair this month.
This year, our graduates spent much of their time out in
the community doing work experience. This gave them
the opportunity to experience different work placements
that they may consider working in once they graduate.
We are happy to announce that all of our graduates have
successfully found a work placement/day program that
they are excited to attend after graduation. We wish to
thank all of the businesses for their support and dedication to our Work Experience program and to the students.
We are very proud of our eight graduates and the work they have accomplished while in the Life Skills program at Kildonan-East Collegiate. On June
14, 2012, we will be holding our annual Grad Tea event in the school’s library, where we will acknowledge all of their accomplishments and bid them
farewell. Congratulations to Stephanie Erb, Aaron Gerbinski, Cole Guderyan, Kyle Loewen, Rikki Robinson, Kirsten Short, Joe Sumner and Daniel
VandenBerg for their dedication and hard work throughout the years. We wish them continued success as they begin a new path into adulthood and
employment.
Music Therapy continues to be an important piece of our Life Skills program. We have been fortunate to be able to provide our students with individualized
and group music therapy sessions throughout the year.
On Thursday May 24, 2012, the Performing Arts Theatre at Kildonan-East was alive with the sound of music. The students of the Life Skills program
were excited to celebrate their musical accomplishments with family and friends. This year we celebrated the students’ growth in their independence.
We had student M.C.s as well as students who chose to sing solos and create their own songs. The highlights of the evening ranged from performances
by the Pen Pal Performers to our good-bye song to Jennalene.
It is with a heavy heart that this year we will be saying good-bye to
Jennalene Brink, our Music Therapist for the past three years.
Jennalene has decided to move back home to Chilliwack, B.C. to
be closer to family. We wish her all the best and thank her for her
commitment and dedication in creating and developing the amazing
music therapy program we have here at Kildonan-East Collegiate
– it is second to none.
Even though Jennalene is leaving, we are excited to announce that
we will be continuing our Music Therapy program in the Life Skills
program for the 2012-2013 school year.
The staff and students in the Life Skills program would like to wish
everyone a safe and restful summer. We have already started planning
for next year and look forward to greeting new students and
parents in the fall.
Summer Edition
Meet Former KE Grad of 1975, Professor Popsicle
as they help people in their lives with water safety and survival techniques.
If you happen to not know who Professor Popsicle is, just
Google it. Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht, aka Professor Popsicle,
graduated from Kildonan-East Collegiate in 1975. He was
in the second graduating class that spent all three years in
the new school when it first opened. Dr. Giesbrecht is a
Professor and Acting Dean at the Faculty of Kinesiology
and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba.
Giesbrecht studies human responses to exercise/work
in extreme environments. He has appeared on David Letterman
as well as Rick Mercer for his over 25 years of
freezing people (well almost) to study human hypothermia
at the University of Manitoba. He has conducted hundreds
of cold water immersion studies that have provided valuable
information about cold stress physiology and prehospital
care for human hypothermia. He also studies
vehicle submersions with people in them to determine
survival strategies from sinking vehicles. He is very happy
with the result of his career and the results of his research
Giesbrecht remembers being very involved in the athletics of the school. He recalls in grade 11 that he was practicing or playing a sport every day of
the school year. He played soccer, basketball, and track that year. As a result, he remembers teacher Adam Lavitt quite well as he was the soccer coach,
the assistant basketball coach, and also the track coach. Giesbrecht also played the clarinet in the band and was additionally involved in the school musicals.
He helped with the make-up for the Wizard of Oz one year and played in the band for the Music Man another year. He also recalls the principal
of KE at the time, Mr. Dann, and how he appreciated his attitude regarding students. Mr. Dann told the students that he would treat them all like
adults unless they proved otherwise.
When he was part way through grade 10, Gordon and two other students decided they would finish high school early. They set a goal of finishing grade
12 five months early. In order to accomplish this, they had to take grade 11 and 12 math on their own. They got their textbooks and had brief tutoring
from the math teacher, Mrs. Heine, but basically taught themselves the course. Although the three of them became very accomplished later in life (two
of them obtained their Ph. D and the other friend is a medical doctor), Giesbrecht regrets rushing his graduation year. Mostly he regrets not playing
basketball in his grade 12 year as KE won the championship that year – to this day he still remembers that and regrets it.
Setting goals even early on became a mission for Giesbrecht. He now talks to students
about goal setting. One extremely high goal he set for himself was to be the
first North American to do a solo expedition to the North Pole. He trained many
years through a series of expeditions on Lake Winnipeg in the winter. It is here
where he researched the physiology of exercise in the cold elements. He ended up
hurting his knee in a skateboard accident which killed the idea. Although his dream
of doing the expedition to the North Pole couldn’t be fulfilled, he didn’t let that
stop him. This set in motion one of his life highlights of completing the Marathon
on Ice (named after the 26 days of the expedition). The 400 km trek on Lake Winnipeg
began to be a fundraiser for the Arthritis Society of Manitoba. The Marathon on
Ice Expedition rose over $11,000 for the foundation.
Gordon Giesbrecht has spent all of his life in education and gives the following
advice to students: set goals high but recognize that the higher the goals you set, the
harder the work it will take to achieve them. Make your career not only about you, but remember to do some good in the community at large. We are
privileged to have free education in Canada that gives you all kinds of options for the future. Try not to think of grade 12 as the end, but the beginning
of your learning experience. Continuing your education will make a huge impact on preparing you for the rest of your life.
The athletics, music, and drama activities that Giesbrecht was involved in during his time at KE got him really into the spirit of the school. He had a
very positive experience and is proud to be alumni of KE. He recalls the rivalry with River East Collegiate and Miles Mac Collegiate. When he finds out
that one of the students in one of his university classes is from one of the rivalry schools from the past, he is always proud to say he is from Kildonan-
East Collegiate.
KEC Canoe Trip 2012
May 22-24 the KEC canoe trip spent three days
in Lac du Bonnet paddling the brisk waters of
Bird River and Lac du Bonnet. Our original plan
to go to Crowduck Lake was changed due to
forest fires and a ban on travel into the back
country. Mr. Juer graciously offered a spot at his
cabin so we weren’t exactly roughing it- but got
to enjoy a little of the great outdoors! The fishing
was decent and we toured the Old Pinawa Dam
for a few hours one afternoon. There were plenty
of garder snakes!! We spotted some deer, a bear
on the side of the road and one crazy beaver!!
Nights were spent by the fire roasting wieners
and making marshmallow (peanut butter) banana
boats. It was a great wilderness experience!
Congratulations to Beryn Ladu who was awarded the Tallman Foundation Scholarship
at a special awards evening May 23 rd, 2012. This scholarship is awarded to a
student of outstanding character who enriches others by his/her presence.
Beryn has been a student at Kildonan-East Collegiate for the past 4 years. During
her time at KEC, she greatly impacted younger students in the community and
peers her own age. While maintaining excellent grades, Beryn has been volunteering
in many different ways both in the school and community. At Kildonan-East
Collegiate, she is a member of the Human Rights club. She has participated and
been a leader in the MARLY Youth conference, collected donations and worked
in the soup kitchen with Siloam Mission, served breakfast to students at the Salisbury
Morse Place school breakfast program and created games and crafts for an
after-school kids’ club at Valley Gardens Middle School. Over the years, she was
also an avid member of the school’s Green Team, Ambassadors and Key Club.
To maintain a healthy lifestyle, Beryn is involved with the badminton and track
teams at Kildonan-East Collegiate and also finds time to play the African drums .
She plans on attending the University of Winnipeg to pursue a career in Pharmacy.
Beryn is an amazing role model and a truly genuine young lady.
Congratulations to Damaris McClinton
The role of Arts Education is linking young people with their culture and an entry
point to raise consciousness and communication with art as a universal language.
Cultural diversity and personal competencies are nurtured through arts
and education, such as the capacity for imagination, expression, originality and
adaptability. Through the integration of the skate board project students can
undergo a research process into community experiences.
On Tuesday, May 1st Kildonan-East Collegiate student and artist, Damaris
McClinton curated a DECKed out exhibit under the bridge gallery at the Forks
which launched National Youth Arts Week. Minister of Culture, Heritage and
Tourism, Flor Marcelino presented a wonderful message of inspiration and accomplishment
to Damaris. Damaris is enjoying the creative experience and process.
She adds, "It makes me feel proud to see what I've done and to see what
other people have done." To view the entire CBC News article, please click
Summer Edition
Greetings from the Library….
Summer is here and it’s that time of year when the library is busy
preparing to close for the school year. Our circulation is now
closed for the year as we prepare to begin the yearly inventory
and we’re requesting your help with returning all outstanding
library items by June 8 th, 2012. Any outstanding items after that
date will be applied to accounts as outstanding fines. To clear
these fines, please return your item ASAP or stop by the library
to satisfy your fines. Remember, if you pay for a “lost” item and
find it later, the library will reimburse you your fine, so why not
clear your account for the upcoming school year?
We want to thank you all for a great year, and look forward to
the fall with many new and exciting new arrivals! Scholastic book
orders are still available from the library. Come pick up some
great summer reads! Orders are due by June 15 th.
Have a happy, sunny summer and see you in the fall. Happy
reading!
June 7th was our annual Guitar Showcase. There were
performances from our Guitar classes and ensembles. It
was a wonderful concert and a big thank you to Mr.
Chalmers for a very successful concert and a great year!
PANORMA SKI TRIP
Kildonan-East Collegiate offered its fourth annual
Panorama Ski Trip this year. The five-day trip was a
complete success.
Our tricked-out bus departed Kildonan-East
Collegiate on Sunday, March 11, at 9:00 p.m.
and returned five days later on Friday, March
16. While staying at the luxurious Toby Creek
Properties at Panorama Mountain Village, our
students skied and snowboarded for three sunfilled
days in beautiful weather. After coming
off the slopes, our students relaxed in the massive
outdoor hot tub overlooking the majestic
Rocky Mountains while they regaled each other
with tales of heroic conquests of green, blue,
and black diamond runs. Plans are already
started for another excellent adventure next
year.
Ski trip supervisors Ms. Park, Ms. Blais, Ms.
Lachowich, Mr. Denysiuk, and Mr. Kutka
would like to thank all forty students who
came on the trip for making the week a truly
enjoyable and memorable event.
EXCITING UPCOMING PROJECTS
We are very excited to announce that we have received funding once
again from the Manitoba Arts Council through the Artists In the
Schools Program and the ArtsSmarts program to have two artists in
residence to work with our students next year. We are fortunate to
look forward to working with Cam Forbes who has been the executive
director of Winnipeg’s inner city art centre, Art City. Art students
will be working with Cam to create a mural in our school.
As well, we will be working with Alejandra Dias Roman who is a
Mexican artist and designer. Alejandra will be working with art
students to create a Mexican papier mache sculpture called Alebrije.
Congratulations to KEC Authors Congratulations to KEC Athletes
Noah Carson and Randi Joe
Plourde participated in the
Fiction Writing Youth Mentorship
Program through Arts
and Cultural Industries Manitoba.
They were selected from
applicants across Winnipeg
because they are dedicated
writers with strong writing
portfolios.
Noah and Randi-Joe both
found the program to be beneficial
and rewarding. They
met with other participants in the program and the facilitator, writer
Anita Daher, every second week for four months. The Youth Mentorship
program introduced participants to the writing process,
storytelling and communication. They were also introduced to a
variety of professional writers who came to speak to them about
their craft. Students had the opportunity to workshop their own
writing and gain valuable feedback. The program culminated with a
public reading at the Millennium Library; an anthology was published
containing all of the participants’ work.
Kildonan-East Collegiate is very proud to have had these talented
writers represent our school in this program and we wish them continued
success with their writing!
Congratulations go out to the following basketball players on being
chosen for this summer's provincial teams. Christina Posthumus was
chosen for the 17U team with the nationals held in New Brunswick
in August.. Abu Conteh and Ayob Ayob were selected for the 17U
men's team with nationals held in Sherbrook, Quebec in August and
Jeremy Martin will serve as the Assistant Coach. Meanwhile
Dharmjit Dhillon will play on the 15U team that will also travel to
Sherbrook in August.

Summer Edition
Exams
Page 17
Here we are approaching the end of a great year in the English Department. Students are preparing for exams, final projects are being created and grade
twelve students have completed the Provincial Exam!
Grade nine, ten and eleven students should check with their teachers to see when and where their exam is.
Classroom updates
Mr. Still’s 20AP class just finished making their own music videos! This awesome project enabled them to combine all the senses to produce an individual
expression of sound, sight, emotion and storytelling.
Two of Ms. Murray’s grade 9 students attended mini university at the University of Winnipeg and have described their experiences below:
My week at the U of W started by being selected by my teachers to take part in the high school enrichment program in March. This program selects
students from grades 9 to 12 from across Winnipeg to take part in a class of their choice for one week at the end of April. I was able to choose from
approximately 30 classes from a variety of different areas such as history, geography, law and drama. The class I chose to take was called The Smell of
Greasepaint. The class was a drama course geared completely around stage makeup.
During the course I learned different techniques of applying greasepaint makeup by listening to instruction and then applying the makeup to my own
face to create what the teacher was explaining. On the second day we had to turn ourselves into elderly people and used scar wax to change our facial
features. On the third and fourth day we got to turn ourselves into skeletons and animals and then we worked with trauma, burns, scars and bruises.
The last two days were the best because we got to create our own look and had a little more freedom to express ourselves than on the other days. The
final project was creating a concrete mask of our face to take home with us.
Overall, I had a great time and am happy that I got to take part in this excellent opportunity.
By Kailyn Saprowich Grade 9
Last month I was selected for the high school enrichment program at the University of Winnipeg for one week. There were various course options I
could have choose from and they all seemed so interesting and fun. Sadly, I could only choose one. I chose mathematics: Statistics, probability, Odds,
games, and Gambling. I learned something new each day; my favourite was the Game of Nims. It’s a fun game and if you knew the strategy then you
could win every round. Toward the end of the week we had a Nims tournament and then we watched “A Beautiful Mind” movie.
Our instructor was the best. He taught us in a way that anyone could understand. He always did his “magic tricks” whenever we were too quiet. He was
entertaining to watch. Finally the fun days of my experience had come to an end. Friday had come, and I was wishing it hadn’t. I had a really fun and
amazing learning experience. I hope next year whoever chooses this course will have just as much fun and create as many memories as I did during my
experience.
CareerBridge
Page 18
After 18 years of operation the Career Bridge program continues to grow and evolve. As well as placing over 60 students in a number
of various work sites, Career Bridge organized the Grade 9 Take Our Kids to Work Day and the Rotary Career Symposium, facilitated
the Grade 10 Career Cruising Program, connected students with both paid and volunteer work experiences, and delivered resume and
interview skills workshops to Grade 12 students doing work experience through their vocational programs. Each of these new programs
has allowed Career Bridge to enrich and enhance the students’ career selection process.
With the support of the community, Career Bridge was able to arrange work internships for our students at CHVN/Ignite 107, Concordia
Place and Concordia Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, Sobeys, Downtown Watch, Boyd Autobody, Shoppers Drug Mart, Valley
Gardens and Salisbury Morse Place Middle Schools, Bertrun E. Glavin, River Elm, and John DeGraff Elementary Schools, Manitoba
Association of Native Firefighters, various retail outlets, Concordia and Stars of Promise daycares, and many others. These placements
enabled our students to gain experience in a possible future career or area of personal interest in high school that would not normally be
available to them until they completed several years of post-secondary education. We were truly excited for our students for undertaking
this unique training opportunity and career exploration that enhanced their resumes, created powerful and important references for the
future, and, in many cases, resulted in paid employment.
We would like to thank all our community partners for working with our students and making their co-operative experiences education
and enjoyable.

KEC at the Women as Career Mentors Dinner
Page 19
On Tuesday, March 6, twenty four of KEC’s finest attended the fifth-annual Women as Career Mentors Dinner at the Delta Hotel in
downtown Winnipeg. For yet another year, Kildonan-East Collegiate was the top school in the province for attendance at this event!
Designed to bring together young women with experienced professionals from a variety of sectors, this evening was an event of dining
and career information exchange!
Career mentors provided their young female counterparts with information relating to workplace attitudes, skill shortage areas and employment
trends. Opportunities were available to discuss the challenges and barriers faced by women, as well as effective methods to
overcome those obstacles. Young women gained information that will help them to make career choices, and establish networking contacts
in a variety of sectors and industries.
By all accounts, the evening was a tremendous success!
If you are interested in attending this event next year, please see Mr. Kutka in Career Bridge, room 143.
