Fostering strong customer loyalty through strong
customer integration is a top priority for Richard
Wolf in times of global economic crisis and regions
beset by uncertainty. The current economic challenges
(financial and economic crisis) mean that all
employees of Richard Wolf and our sales partners
across the world need to intensify their commitment
and impress our global customers with the unparalleled
quality of our products, our unique service,
and our excellent customer focus. This approach is
absolutely essential because successful companies
create an "emotional" link with their customers.
Despite the uncertain forecasts about the willingness
of the public healthcare sector to invest worldwide,
we completed the first quarter of this year with
an extremely gratifying result. This was particularly
the case in the regions of Asia, Latin America, and
with our subsidiaries, where we have been able to
generate significant growth in orders booked.
The remaining three quarters are still burdened with
uncertainty, since the financial and economic crisis
across the world has not generally come to an end
yet.
There’s nothing like success to generate success.
We would like to take this opportunity to express

success and to our employees for the outstanding
first quarter. We hope that intensified and dedicated
commitment of everyone will continue the initial
success of the year 2010. After all, particularly in

AORN
This year, Denver in Colorado hosted the
57th AORN Congress. RWMIC enthused
congress participants with its impressive
new booth concept and also impressed the
competition. The new look communicated
Richard Wolf’s Competence and
Confidence to booth visitors, in line with the
Motto "Yes, We Can". The AORN Congress
was very well attended, with between

4000 and 5000 Nurses registered. We
collected a total of 159 quality leads.
The featured products and services, and
the continuing educational offerings, especially
in the area of reprocessing, represented
another outstanding success. Nurses in
the US have to participate in continuing
education and the AORN Congress offers
the perfect platform for this. Richard Wolf
On 21 January, the new Prima Vista
Richard Wolf Academy hosted its first
hands-on training course featuring
Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM).
Surgeons from around the United States
attended the course, consisting of a lecture
and a hands-on wet lab, to learn about
this revolutionary procedure.
Featuring Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery,
a minimally invasive approach
for the removal of polyps and early stage
rectal cancer, the patient is spared from
undergoing a debilitating low anterior
resection and the long recovery time and
scarring that is characteristic of an open
procedure. The second course held on 27
February featured a lecture and a handson
demonstration of endoscopic discectomy
and endoscopic dorsal ramus rhizoto-

provided additional value to the nurse attendees
with its certified Continuing Education
Classes carried out in the booth, and
this exerts a positive effect on company
interest.
The Steris problems in the US meant that
the focus was on the ASP Sterilization processes
Sterrad NX and Sterrad 100NX.
Currently, these processes are almost the
only sterilization methods in the US for
non-autoclavable instruments, such as
fiberscopes.
The new booth concept and all the booth
staff contributed to the success of the show
and left a positive impression on all potential
customers. The 58th AORN Congress
will be held in Philadelphia, PA, in March
2011.

2nd Hip Arthroscopy Workshop in Leipzig
German orthopedic surgeons train new operating techniques
In cooperation with Dr. Miehlke and Dr.
Sobau (ARCUS Sports Hospital), our 2nd
training course of hip arthroscopy was held
on 5 March in Leipzig. The delegates received
all the theoretical background information
for hip arthroscopy in the first part of the
course. In the afternoon, the theory was then
put into practice at the Institute of Anatomy
The event was oversubscribed with some
160 participants. This was how we came to
enter the arena in rather a triumphalist
mood. However, there were also doubters
who believed that Da Vinci might steal the
show.
But they were very wide of the mark!
Naturally, everyone was rather curious
about the robot. We were quite relaxed and
adopted a policy of live and let live. Yes, the

center in Caceres, Spain, in cooperation with
Dr. Miehlke and Dr. Sobau, ARCUS Sports
Hospital, and Dr. Ribas, University Hospital
Barcelona, from 14 – 15 May.

record the birth of the COBRA and the
success of this workshop.

and successes, as we have just learnt in
Würzburg. Naturally, our thanks go to the
urologists Schön, Schiefelbein and the all
the team at the hospital. The entire Wolf

During recent years, arthroscopy and
arthroscopic surgery of the hips have
attracted a great deal of attention across
the world. The procedures for knee and
shoulder arthroscopy established over a
period of many years are now being deployed
at specialist centers for visualization
of the hip joint. Cartilage therapies,
joint-capsule surgery and procedures for
bone correction are now part of the standard
tool kit of a hip-joint arthroscopist.
Pain in the hip joint is not only suffered by
athletes. Not all pain experienced in the
area of the hips originates in the hip joint,
but arthroscopy of the hip joint is only indicated
for pain on medical grounds after
appropriate clarification.
The building blocks for establishing a
secure diagnosis include taking a case
history, clinical investigation and X-ray
diagnosis. We also carry out MR arthro-
graphy of the affected hip joint in order to
provide a further diagnostic safeguard and
establish the extent of the injury. Hip arthroscopy
is indicated once the pathology
has been definitively established and if
there is resistance to conservative therapy.
Surgical technique:
Arthroscopy can be carried out in the dorsal
or lateral position. When the dorsal
position favored by us is adopted, the
patient is placed on a standard extension
table. The patient is extended over a well
upholstered counter-traction rod so that an
adequate opening of the joint cavity can
be achieved. A camera and working instruments
can then be introduced into the
hip joint without injury to the interior structures
of the joint under image-converter
control. Specialist instruments are required
for safe positioning of instruments and
implementation of the planned surgical
steps.
Arthroscopic operation:
Joint-capsule surgery and femoro-acetabular
impingement are the most common
indications for hip arthroscopy with hip
conditions across the world. The procedure
is technically demanding and complex.
From an arthroscopic perspective, the hip
joint is comprised of two parts: a central
and a peripheral compartment. They are
divided by the acetabular labrum (joint
capsule), which like the labrum of the
shoulder surrounds the edge of the acetabulum
like a protective wall and delimits
February in 2008. More than 250 surgeons
come to ESTC/TUMS every year to make the
most of our unique training courses. Every
year many surgeons and gynecologists
from various cities in Iran practice different
aspects of laparoscopy at the center. This
centre is also able to accept surgeons from
other countries for training under the supervision
of expert laparoscopic surgeons. It is
well equipped with the most advanced and
up-to-date technology and facilities.
ESTC/TUMS offers twenty-two workstations
for dry lab and six workstations in wet lab.

The Endoscopic Surgery Training Center of
Tehran University of Medical Science
(ESTC/TUMS) is very beneficial for general
surgeons, gynecologists, urologists, etc.,
because of the rigorous scientific and technical
qualities applied here. The new building
for the ESTC/TUMS was built in
January 2007. The center was created from
the combined synergy of the Tehran University
of Medical Science, and Aryan
Tandorost Company (the agent of Richard
WOLF in Iran). The modern high-quality
instruments for laparoscopy are installed by
Aryan Tandorost.
The first advanced course working on animals
in the animal lab was held from 7-19
the central compartment with respect to
the peripheral compartment. Cartilage
smoothing, micro-fracturation or abrasion
arthroplasty can also be carried out as
necessary, as can labrum debridement,
partial resection or refixation of the labrum
Bony protuberance (osteophyte) in the peripheral compartment
using thread anchors to stabilize the labrum.
After carrying out these key surgical
steps, the leg is repositioned from the
extension to the flexion position. Creating
new specific accesses allows the peripheral
compartment to be visualized and surgical
interventions to be carried out. The
bony protuberances requiring therapy in
the context of FAI (see Fig.) are generally
found here and they can then be removed
using special microsurgical instruments. A
function check can be immediately carried
out on the remedy for the mechanical
obstacle between surgical interventions
using arthroscopic visualization and X-ray
control.

On Wednesday 14 April 2010, partners
Dr. Ahmed Al Khalid (head of Pan Arabic
Gynecologic Endoscopic Association) and
Mr. Alfons Notheis Richard Wolf / Managing
Director) celebrated the opening ceremony
celebrating the result of their combined
cooperation and investment, the First
Gynecologic Endoscopy training Center In
the Middle East at Dr. Al-Khalid ‘s Hospital
(Al-Ahly Specialist Hospital Damascus /
Syria), under the auspices of the Minster of
Health in Syria.
The celebration was followed by 2 workshops:
1.Advances in Gynecologic Laparoscopic
Surgery (14/5/2010) including live cases

• Uterine Myomectomy

Norwegian Laryngology Meeting
The Norwegian Laryngology Association
held its annual meeting from 22 – 25
March at Harahorn. The Harahorn Hotel is
situated 1100 m above sea level with a
wonderful view over the valley. The hotel is
located in Hemsedal, one of Norway’s largest
ski resorts in the Scandinavian Alps.
DIDR. MEHN-ANDERSEN AS was a part of
this event, and we were privileged to get Dr.
Roland Rydell from the University Hospital
in Lund, Sweden to join us for some lectures
on phoniatry and laryngology.
Dr. Rydell has been working with the HRES
for some years now and uses it on a daily
basis in his work with patients and famous
singers in Sweden.
After Dr. Rydell gave his lectures, we got
some hands-on demonstrations with HRES
and the stroboscope.
We brought one HRES and two stroboscopes
to the meeting to provide hands-on
experience and this enabled the physicians
to get to know a little bit more about the
system and its use. The Norwegian Laryngology
association aims to have these
meetings once a year and the meeting
always take place at this wonderful location.
The delegates at the meeting are physicians
specializing in laryngology, with most of
them coming from various hospitals in
and transfer of advances between Europe,
the USA, and the Middle East, as well as
providing appropriate training courses for
Endoscopic Gynecology. A full range of
activities is being planned and the program
will be announced in the near future.

This is the meeting where all the major
laryngologists from Norway gather for 2
days to gather new academic inputs and to
mix socially.
I would thank Dr. Rydell on behalf of WOLF
and DIDR. MEHN-ANDERSEN AS for his
insights and participation at the event. Our
thanks also to KeboMed, Denmark, for helping
out during this event. It was a great
meeting with a lot of interesting lectures. We
are already looking forward to the next meeting.

A big, loyal fan of the Richard Wolf "Piezolith
Product Range" has come forward in
Indonesia. Professor Doddy M. Soebadi,
MD, PhD from Darmo Hospital Surabaya in
Indonesia has been working with Richard
Wolf PiezoLith Systems since they were first
installed in 1989. He initially worked with
the PiezoLith 2300, before going on to
work with each of the follow-up systems,
which have proved to be reliable, effective
and extremely successful in clinical use for
treating and disintegrating stones to this
day.
The latest configuration of the Richard Wolf
Piezolith 3000 is currently being used very

From 18 – 20 February, Richard Wolf Medical
Instruments Corporation (RWMIC)
exhibited the WellWave ESWT (extra-corporeal
shockwave therapy) device for the
first time in the United States at the American
Physical Therapist Association (APTA)
convention. This convention was attended
Ed Troike & Ron Haselhorst, San Diego, APTA Convention
by over 6,000 physical therapists, PT assistants,
academics and students. Many
of the delegates to the convention had
their first exposure to Richard Wolf and
our products.
The convention provided Director of Marketing,

Schmidt, and Quality Assurance / Regulatory
Affairs Manager, Ron Haselhorst,
with an opportunity to demonstrate the
WellWave and promote its many benefits
to this professional group. Physical
Therapists are often closely associated
with hospitals and orthopedic surgeons.
They work closely with patients recovering
successfully in the Darmo Hospital Surabaya.
The PiezoLith 3000 from Richard
Wolf is being used extremely effectively and
efficiently in clinical settings to destroy kidney
and ureteral stones.
The three-way focus permits the PiezoLith
3000 to be individually switchable for successful
stone fragmentation with minimal
effect on surrounding tissue.
The objective of Professor Doddy M. Soebadi
is to pass on his extremely positive
experiences with the "PiezoLith" to his colleagues
in the country.
There are approximately 30 lithotriptors in
clinical use in Indonesia. 15 of these sys-

often see patients that are suffering
from chronic and repetitive stress injuries.
The WellWave is a proprietary Richard
Wolf product that uses piezo-electric ge-
nerated acoustic shockwaves to simulate
the action of a focused manual massage
or a deep tissue massage. The obvious
advantage that the WellWave provides to
this convention group is an effective alternative
to the physical effort necessary to
treat their patient group and the ability to
treat more patients during a normal work
day.
Many of the attendees stopped to ask
questions on how the WellWave might be
used in their practice. Mr. Troike and Mr.
Haselhorst took time to demonstrate the
simplicity of WellWave operation and

encouraging this important group of customers
to consider the WellWave ESWT
device as they start or expand their practice.
Overall, the APTA convention provided
RWMIC with a template to effectively
display and demonstrate the WellWave at
future shows and exposed the participants
to the Richard Wolf brand and the
WellWave unit.
