Classical <strong>India</strong>n music islearned orally and is grounded in a rigorous traditional structure. At the same time it is also highlyimprovised so it is always new, responding to the creative input <strong>of</strong> its players.


The musical portion <strong>of</strong> the program will be enhanced and expanded by a presentation by Allyn Mineron the subject <strong>of</strong> “Classical <strong>India</strong>n <strong>Music</strong>”. And she is superbly prepared to do so with a Ph.D. in <strong>India</strong>n<strong>Music</strong>ology from Banaras Hindu University and a second Ph.D. in Sanskrit from the University <strong>of</strong>Pennsylvania where she is a Senior Lecturer in <strong>India</strong>n <strong>Music</strong> in the Department <strong>of</strong> South Asian Studies.She has studied the sitar under Thakur Bhan Singh in Varanasi and Ali Akbar Khan in California.Sudev Sheth will perform with Allyn on the tabla, <strong>North</strong> <strong>India</strong>’s famous twopiecehand drum which is an essential musical instrument to all classicalconcerts. Its distinctive sound is well known to listeners <strong>of</strong> world music.Beginning his studies at age nine, he is currently a disciple <strong>of</strong> Bombaybased tabla player Dr. Aneesh Pradhan.
