69 I dare say that important ancient texts may yet be
discovered among palm-leaf manuscripts in Tamil
Nadu or Kerala (many of which are being mindlessly
lost or destroyed for want of active interest). For
instance, I was once shown in Kerala, among many
ancient texts, a thick palm-leaf manuscript of
a Ramayana by Vyasa. (Some traditions do mention
it, but it has been regarded as lost.) Post-
Independence India has been prodigiously careless
in preserving its cultural heritage.
