Unknown, daughter of Gerhardt Lange and Margarete Schroeder. She was born 30 Aug 1854 in Hude, Germany, 

and died 05 Oct 1937 in Lenz, Karnes Co., Texas. 

Notes for Hinrich Ohlenbusch: 

Immigrated to the U.S., arriving at the port of Galveston, Texas on or about October 31, 1885. Lived in 

Germany at Hudo, near Oldenburg. In Texas with his wife and three children, they settled near Witting in Lavaca 

County. About 21 years later, in 1906, the moved his family to Karnes County and bought a farm. In 1911 he 

quit the farm business and moved to Knippa, Uvalde County, Texas where lived until his death. 

Hinrich was a faithful reader of the Nachrichten and tried to preserve the German language and heritage. 

Hinrich Ohlenbusch died at home in Knippa, Uvalde Co., Texas. He was first buried at Knippa, then moved to 

Moulton City Cemetery, Moulton, Lavaca Co., Texas. 

Notes for Anna Margarete Lange: 

Heinrich and Anna Ohlenbusch left Germany for America September 30, 1885, landing at Indianola, Texas, and 

settled near Witting, Texas. They had three children at the time, two more daughters were born here. One son, 

George died in Germany. Heinrich was a farmer and trader of animals in Germany, and had $1,000.00 cash 

when he arrived here. 

Anna was Christened October 4, 1851, in the Lutheran Church. Anna started to school at the age of 7 years, 

and had to walk 4 miles in wooden shoes, often with 12 inches of snow on the ground. If the children did not go 

to school, the parents had to pay taxes for the absent days. Ann's teacher was Mr. H. Kleine who had 100

children to teach. He was very strict in work and in religion, having prayer and song each morning. 

Anna's Father was married three times. She had two older half sisters and one sister, Mrs. Meta Lange Wessels 

(Herman Wessel) who also came to America in 1887...settling at Witting and later at Runge, Texas. Anna's dear 

dear Mother died in 1866 (Mrs. Lange in Germany). Anna was 15 then and left home to work for others when 

her mother had been dead one year. Her father remarried after one year. 

Anna worked for the same family 9 years, until she married Heinrich. She worked from early morning till late 

at night...had to milk 10 or 12 cows, raise a garden, spin wool and Flax. She could spin enough yarn to make 12 

yards of material in 1 day for a dress. She also made the school dresses. She walked 5 miles to town to market 

butter, eggs, and berries..then brought back the money in silver. She received $.25 cents for a trip to town. Her 

yearly wages were $28.00, 18 yards of line and material for one dress and a pair of shoes. 

Anna and Heinrich had 3 sons, Hermann, George and Dietrich. George died in Germany at the age of 6 months 

shortly before they left for America. Also there daughters, Mathilda, Martha, and Anna. Anna's mother did 

practical nursing and served as midwife on many occasions. She even delivered her last two babies herself when 

help did not come in time. In relating the events in connection with the births of her babies she said she was not 

worried. She just sat in a big rocking chair near a table where all necessary articles and equipment had been 

placed ahead of time. By the time her husband and help arrived, the baby was bathed and wrapped in a warm 

spun blanket.

Annie was born in Witting, Texas, and she married Henry on Sept 13, 1906 in Bauerville, Texas. She was

She died while in Tucson, Ariz. where she was visiting Hindenberg. Henry died in 1972. Anna was living

Notes for Henry Coldewey: 

Henry had a twin brother who died young. I do not know what his name was. 

One of the first families of German descent to settle in Nolan County were Henry and Anna Coldewey. Both of 

their parents had immigrated from Germany, arriving by boat in Galveston and settling in and near Columbus, 

Texas, and Witting, in Lavaca County, Texas. Henry's parents were Henrich and Helene Coldewey and Anna 

Gesine was the child of Heinrich and Anna Ohlenbusch. 

Just before Christmas, Henry and Anna moved into their new home that had been built by themselves and Herman 

Ohlenbusch. The Coldeweys lived there 10 years (1916), during which children Leonard, Victor (who died when 

6 months old), Harry, and twins Hindenburg and Irmgard were born. 

In 1916, Henry and Anna sold their farm and moved near Loraine, Mitchell Co., Texas. Anna recalls that the 

sandstorms of 1917-1918, were so bad that kerosene lamps had to be lighted in the middle of the afternoons 

because it was so dark. 

Then in January of 1921, they purchased another farm and moved to Scurry County, south of Hermleigh. It was 

while they lived here that another child, Mildred, was born in 1925. 

During these years, Henry and Anna and their children attended the Lutheran Church in Loraine, Mitchell Co., 

TX. In the early years, a minister traveled to the church every two weeks and conducted the services in the 

afternoon. In 1954, the Coldeweys began attending services in Sweetwater, Nolan Co., TX., at the newly 

organized Peace Lutheran Church. In 1967, they became charter members of the Faith Lutheran Church, in

Sweetwater, Nolan Co., TX., formed by the Peace and Calvary Lutheran churches. 

In 1963, Henry and Anna made the decision to retire and move off the farm. They purchased a home at 806 

Bowie, in Sweetwater, Nolan Co., Texas. One of the attractions to this place was that the house was so nearly 

the same style and arrangement as their farm home. The large garden plot and fruit trees made it seem like a 

"mini-farm." Henry enjoyed life here to the very end, when he died on a Saturday evening, April 22, 1972, while 

mowing grass in the back yard. Anna lived alone in Sweetwater until 1978, when she moved to Brooksmith near 

Brownwood to live with her son, Harry. Anna enjoyed being with and living with her family until she died, 

February 24, 1985.

Funeral for Henry Coldewey, 91, was at 2 P.M., April 24, 1972, Monday in Faith Lutheran Church, with the 

Rev. William Bloom, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Roscoe Cemetery under direction of Cate-Spencer 

Funeral Home. Henry died at 7:15 P.M. Saturday following an apparent heart attack. 

Born January 24, 1881, in Colorado County, he was a retired farmer, and had been a resident of Sweetwater for 

eight years. He was a member of faith Lutheran Church at Sweetwater. He married Anna Ohlenbusch, 

September 13, 1906, in Witting, Texas. The couple moved to Roscoe, then to Loraine, and then to Scurry 

County in 1921, farming near Hermleigh. They moved to Sweetwater, Texas in 1963. 

Marriage Notes for Anna Ohlenbusch and Henry Coldewey: 

Henry and Anna were married on September 13, 1906, in Bauerville, Lavaca Co., Texas. 

As newlyweds (having been married on September 13), Henry and Annie arrived by train in Roscoe, Texas, the 

1st of October, 1906. They were met by a land agent who escorted them to their hotel. The next morning he 

took them out to the farm 3 miles southwest of Roscoe, which had been purchased by Herman Ohlenbusch 

(brother of Annie). The Coldeweys bought part of the farm from Herman and moved into the house that had 

perviously been occupied by the Jess Lagol family. It consisted of two bedrooms, a hall, and a kitchen. Henry 

and Annie purchased some of the furniture that was in the house. Their first tasks was to harvest the crop that 

had already been planted on the farm.

Burell died Jan. 16, 2004, at his residence. 

He was born May 8, 1912, in Uvalde to Albert and Ana Mussman Burell. They preceded him in death. 

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ella Burell. 

He is survived by one daughter, Joyce Evans and husband, Ron, of New Braunfels; two sons, Marcus Burell and 

wife, Barbara, of Uvalde, and Delton Burell and wife, Laura, of Houston; two brothers, Hugo Burell of Gonzales

Herbert "Bert" Frank Krause, CMSGT, USAF Ret., age 85 of Canyon Lake, passed away Thursday March 17, 

2005 in New Braunfels. 

He was born Sept. 30, 1919 at Knippa, Texas to Frank D. and Mathilda (Ohlenbusch) Krause. He married Elvie 

Edmonds May 18, 1945. He retired from the United States Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1967 after 

serving more than 24 years and had lived at Canyon Lake the last 30 years. 

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Elvie (Edmonds) Krause of Canyon Lake; three daughters, Jane Ann 

Farley and husband James of Hondo, Barbara Jean Durbin of Canyon Lake and Sandra Lee Sadler and husband 

Ray of San Antonio; a step-daughter, Ramona Scott of Oakdale, Louisiana; a sister, Margaret Swope of Houston; 

seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren. 

Visitation is scheduled at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Braunfels on Monday from 5 P.M. until 9 P.M. 

The Funeral Service will be conducted at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Braunfels at noon on Tuesday,

Othell was born in Carlton and married Leonard, Sept. 29th, 1929, in Tahoka. In 1932 they moved from Tahoka 

to Meadow and to Inadale the next year. In 1942 they moved to Mitchell County on a farm 6 miles north of 

Loraine, Texas. They lived there until moving to Loraine, on Main Street, just north of the Methodist Church, in 

1968. This house was once the Methodist Pastors home. At her death she was survived by her husband, 

Leonard; three sons, Maurice of Midland, Joe Edd of Colorado City and Raymond of Abilene; one daughter, Mrs 

Bob Reddin of Ft. Worth; four brothers, R.B. Nowlin of Comanche, Noble Nowlin of Hot Springs, Ark., C.B. 

Nowlin of Meadow and her twin brother Odell Nowlin of Snyder; one sister, Mrs. Bartie Renfro of Watsonville, 

Calif.; and eleven grandchildren. 

Othell went to school at Prairie View, between Lake View and Meadow, Texas. She went through the 9th or 10th 

grade there.

Leonard and Othell met while Leonard was farming a 160 acre farm near Lakeview, Texas. At this time Leonard 

was living with a family named Schoppa. Cleburne Nowlin (Othell's brother) was a friend of Leonard's and this 

is how Leonard met Othell. During Leonard & Othell's courting days, Leonard had an old car and they would 

park behind the old Lakeview school. Leonard and Othell were married right after midnight in the front yard of a 

Judges house. They used car headlights to see. This was in Tahoka, Texas. After they were married they went 

to Big Spring, Texas to attend the confirmation of Hindenburg & Irmgard, Leonards twin brother and sister, and 

spent some time with Grandpa & Grandma, Leonards parents near Inadale, Texas.

Funeral services for Oscar Harry Coldewey, 93, of Brookesmith will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, October 19, at 

the Grace Lutheran Church in Brownwood with Pastor Philip Graf officiating. Burial will follow in the Eastlawn 

Memorial Park in Early. Davis-Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood is in charge of arrangements. 

Visitation will be held from 6 until 8pm, Monday, October 18, at the funeral home. 

Mr. Coldewey died Wednesday, October 13, 2004 at a Brownwood Nursing Home. 

He was born on July 27, 1911, in Roscoe, Texas, the son of Henry and Anna Ohlenbusch Coldewey. He married 

Thekla Louise Lieke on December 26, 1934 in Karnes City, Texas. They were married 68 years. She preceded 

him in death on June 15, 2003. 

He had been a resident of Brookesmith since 1943. 

He was a very active member of the Grace Lutheran Church and served many years on the Brookesmith School 

Board and participated in many other community activities. He operated his own farm and ranch for more than 

70 years. In his early years, he worked at a cotton gin. As a rancher he raised cattle, sheep and goats. As a 

farmer he raised maise, wheat, oats and cotton. He owned the first cotton stripper in Brown County. During the 

drought years in the 1950s, he supplemented income by combining grain, stripping cotton, welding and hauling 

cattle for other farmers and ranchers. 

He was and avid hunter and fisherman, hosting many such events on his ranch. He was affectional "adopted" as 

father and grandfather by many young people in his community and church. 

Survivors include: Three daughters, Gladys Ruth Reich and her husband, Edward, of Charlotte, N.C., Dorothy 

Jane Ebel and her husband, William, of Deerwood, Minn. and Marilyn Delores Comotto and her husband Don, of 

Hendersonville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren 

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters..

FOND MEMORIES: 

My Only Recipe from Mamo Charles Reich 

One morning after "working cattle" as Papo called it, (making steers out of bulls and giving vaccinations) I 

brought into the kitchen the former parts of the former bulls. I figured Mamo could cook just about anything. I 

figured right. Mamo knew exactly what to do. "Get out the skillet, some cornmeal, cooking oil and a little 

pepper," she said, "and if you want to eat those things go right ahead and fix them yourself"

Morning Devotions Charles Reich 

I remember well the morning "Portals of Prayer" devotions each day. Between themselves they would divide out 

the devotion part, the Scripture reading, the prayer for the day of the week and the Psalm. The Psalm was the wild 

card, sometimes it was a short one and sometimes it was a long one - and Mamo would read the whole thing! 

occasionally, something would come up during the day that was very fitting for the devotion and Mamo and Papo 

would take the time to point it out to me. Their faith in Christ was alive to me. 

A Classic Papo Remark Charles Reich 

One of my favorite stories of a classic remark from Papo came one day at the feed store. Papo pulled the pickup 

around to be loaded up with "beef cake. " It was a young man at the loading dock and Papo asked him, "What's 

the price today?" The young man said, "Sir, the more you buy the cheaper they get." 

To which Papo remarked, "Well, if that's the case, just keep loading me up 'til I don't owe you a thing!" 

Evening CardsCharles Reich 

After a hard day's work on the ranch for a little boy, I sure looked forward to the evenings - cards and dominoes! 

Mamo was the best at both cards and dominoes. She would beat Papo and myself night in and night out. She 

would consistently win six of seven games in a row. Papo would get so frustrated he would quit and call it a night, 

as if he never wanted to play again. The next evening - he would be begging Mamo to play cards again. 

Shooting Sparrows at Nap TimeCharles Reich 

After lunch was naptime. I was supposed to lie down or at least do something quiet in the house. As the afternoon 

heat blistered, Mamo and Papo would sit in their easy chairs with a lap pad to play solitaire. Somehow I managed 

to convince them that I needed to be outside attending to the cattle pens. (I may have thought that I was in control, 

but that was never the case with Mamo and Papo. They were very experienced and always knew what I was up 

to.) 

A favorite activity of mine while Papo was taking a nap' was shooting sparrows around the house with my B-B 

gun. Papo told me I was doing him a favor shooting those sparrows. One afternoon Papo wanted to join in the fun 

so he got his shot gun out and blew the whole flock of sparrows out of the tree; nests, birds, branches and all! 

After that, shooting birds with my B-B gun wasn't as much fun anymore. 

I'd Love to be RichKaren Weis 

One summer I had the privilege to ride with Mamo and Papo to go visit Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Bill and my 

cousins in Minnesota. We three got to make this trip in their 1960 white Chevrolet sedan. 

As we were driving along we passed a sparkling, black Rolls Royce-the first one I had ever seen. I must have 

been about 8 or 9 years old (the perfect age to begin noticing and drooling over cars). I said, "Oh, how I'd love to 

be rich enough to have a car like that, wouldn't you Papo?" "Nope," he said flatly. 

After fifteen to twenty minutes of no further explanation from him, I continued to wonder, "Do I dare question 

Papo?" More miles went by and with each white stripe on the road, I mustered more courage. 

"Papo", I blurted out, "why wouldn't you want to be rich enough to have a fancy car like that one?" "I am as rich 

or even richer than that man" he pronounced. "You are?' I was certainly puzzled. "A person don't need to be rich 

to be as wealthy as we already are" he explained fully.

Earl J. Critz, 83, of Sweetwater, died Monday, May 3, 2003 at Roscoe Health care Center. 

Services are pending with McCoy Funeral home. Burial is planned at Garden of Memories Cemetery in 

Sweetwater. 

Mr. Critz was born July 27, 1920 in Wastella. He married Wilma I. Hyde on September 3, 1971 in Sweetwater. 

Mr. Critz was a member of Lamar Street Baptist Church. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. 

Marines and was in the automobile business for many years having worked at Modern Pontiac Oldsmobile in 

Sweetwater and his own car lot business. He was a lifelong resident of the Roscoe and Sweetwater area. 

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Critz of Sweetwater; one son, Gerald Ray Critz and wife, Becky of Lubbock;

in Sweetwater, Texas on March 1, 1931, to James Robert and Alma Hefner. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Alma Hefner who died in August, 1995, and his son?s mother, 

Bettie Lindberg Hefner. 

He is survived by his loving son, David Hefner and daughter-in-law, Brenda of Mission; sister, Joyce Phillips and 

brother-in-law, Bob of Houston; nieces, Stephanie Phillips of Houston and Jennifer Sciba and her husband, Jeff,

He was raised in Edinburg, Texas and graduated from Edinburg High School in 1948. He attended Edinburg 

Regional College and Texas Tech University and graduated from Baylor College of Denistry. He served in the 

U.S. Air Forces as a dentist and was stationed in Saudi Abrabia and Germany. He established his dental practice 

in Harlingen upon his discharge from the Air Force. 

He was a long-time active member of the Harlingen Kiwanis Club and was devoted to the work of the Gideon 

Society. He was also a faithful participant in the prison ministry in Brownsville. He was a strong Christian who 

touched many lives by sharing the Word of God and by his example of reverence, generosity and gentleness. His 

love for family, music, good health, and photography also permeated his life. 

He grew up in the First Christian Church in Edinburg. He was currently a member of North Way Bible Church in 

Harlingen and led the Wednesday night Bible Study worship services. 

Visitation hours will be held from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., 

Thursday, October 9, 2003, at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen. 

Funeral services will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home at 10 a.m., Friday, October 10, 2003 with the Rev. 

kelly Rumfield officiating.

CENTERVILLE — Services for Karl C. “Butch” Ohlenbusch, 57, of Centerville are set for 2 p.m. Friday at the 

North Creek Baptist Church in north east Leon County. 

The Rev. Richard Ray of North Creek Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in North Creek Cemetery. 

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Walters Funeral Home in Centerville and from 9 a.m. to the time 

of the services Friday at the church. 

Mr. Ohlenbusch died Monday in a Palestine, Texas, hospital. 

He was born in Knippa, Texas, and had lived in Leon County since 1982. He worked as a machinist in a metal 

shop and was a member of North Creek Baptist Church, where he worked with the church’s prison ministry. 

Survivors include his mother, Louise Ohlenbusch of Centerville; a son, Michael Ohlenbusch of Japan; five 

daughters, Karleen Gilliam of Wilmer, Texas, Middy Ohlenbusch of Dallas, Christine Ohlenbusch of Port 

Lavaca, Texas, Rachel Ohlenbusch and Steffani Ohlenbusch, both of Houston; two sisters, Linda Ohlenbusch- 

Phillips of Katy, Texas, and Melba Carter of Wagoner, Okla.; and four grandchildren.

Notes for James Maurice Coldewey: 

These notes were provided by Maurice, May 19, 1997. 

Maurice was born on a farm close to Meadow, Texas. After about one year, Maurice and his parents, moved to a 

farm outside of Inadale, Scurry Co.,Texas. Some time later, a year or two they moved to a farm near China Grove 

in Scurry Co., Texas, south of Hermleigh, Scurry Co., Texas. This was a farm that Uncle Harry had rented. 

Uncle Harry was not married and not living on the farm. He let my dad, Leonard, farm a hundred acres of that 

farm. I think it was the next year that we moved again to a farm about one mile west. This farm was about a 

quarter mile south of my grandparents, Henry & Annie Coldewey's farm. We lived there until December 1941. 

I think it was the first of January 1942, that we moved to a farm owned by Mrs. Edie Pierce. This farm was six

miles north of Loraine, Mitchell Co., Texas. I lived there until after graduation from high school and then I lived 

in Sweetwater, Nolan Co., Texas, for about one year. I worked for U.S. Gipson, Texas Electric and May 

Brothers Lumber Yard during this time. 

On December 28, 1950, I enlisted in the U.S. Air force. I took basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, 

Bexar Co., Texas. After basic training I was assigned to Patrick AFB, in Florida, near Coco Beach and 

Melbourne. In June of 1953, I was transferred to Tokyo, Japan. I soon found out that I could go to Korea for a 

year and would get out of the service four months sooner. I really planned to go back in the service after six 

months, but a fair haired lady named Helen Richard, took my eye and that was the end of my military career. 

I worked for Higginbotham Lumber yard after my discharge until February 1955. By this time I was engaged 

and knew I could not make a living at what I was doing, so I moved to Midland, Midland Co., Texas and looked 

for a better paying job. I found a job with Eddins-Walcher Oil and Butane Co., as a bookkeeper. In 1958 I 

bought one half interest in an Automobile Repair Shop. As of this writing, January 12, 1997, I am still in this 

business. 

Other information: 

Schooling: first thru fifth grade at Pyron, a country school near Inadale, Scurry Co., Texas. 

Sixth thru twelfth at Loraine, Mitchell Co., Texas 

Became a member of the Church of Christ in December 1954. Served as a Deacon of the Main Street 

Church of Christ in Midland from about 1980 until October 1995.

Notes for Helen Marie Richard: 

These notes were provided to me by Helen, May 19, 1997. 

I started to school in Roscoe, Nolan Co., Texas where my dad ran a service station. We moved to the farm and I 

started second grade in Loraine, Mitchell Co., Texas. We moved to Midland, Midland Co., Texas for the last 

half of the 6th grade and the first half of the 7th grade where daddy farmed Max Bermans place and this is where 

Gail was born. We lived 15 miles out in the country along with the rattlesnakes! I was Baptized into My Lord 

in the summer of 1949 at Stanton, Martin Co., Texas. Midland is where I first learned the joys of volleyball. I 

played all through school and on one team or another until 1993. I broke my finger playing and my hands got 

arthritis and it hurt to bad to hit a ball. I played basketball all through Junior High and High school. 

Music was, and is another love of mine. I sang in one group or another from age 12 until...... My brother, 

Donald, and friends Joy Graham Scarbrough and Jimmy Smith, who lived in Roscoe, Nolan Co., Texas had a 

quartette for several years. We traveled around our area singing at different events. There was never a time 

when we all got together, that someone didn't start a song and then we were off and running. 

We moved back to Loraine, Mitchell Co., Texas in 1950 and that is where I graduated from High school in 1955. 

I met Maurice at a football game where I was a cheerleader. He was giving me a hard time and I told hem he had 

to buy me a coke at the Victory Pep Ralley. He said he would if I would go the the Cokers Cafe in Colorado 

City, Mitchell Co., Texas. He said my friend could go too, so I asked my dad and he said, "I don't want you 

riding with him. I know how he drives!" He let me go, however, and we were engaged by the end of November 

1954 and had not missed a night seeing each other. 

I stayed at home and raised our children. I went back to work part time when Lisa was in the 4th grade. i 

worked for Camp Fire Girls as secretary and later Acting Executive Director until May 1978. They were located 

just 2 blocks from Lisa's school. 

In the fall of 1978, I went to work for San Jacinto JHS where Lisa attended 7th and 8th grades and I am still there

as secretary to the principal at the time of these notes.

Joyce grew up on a farm, 6 miles north of Loraine, Mitchell Co. Texas, where she lived until her marriage to Bob. 

She attended Loraine High School, in Loraine, Texas, and graduated in May 1955. While in high school, she 

played Basketball, was in the band, and was a majorette. 

After her marriage, Joyce and Bob lived in Midland, Texas, where she worked for J. Henry Wilkerson, Jr. , 

Attorney and Pat M. Baskin, Attorney from 1955 to 1957, as a secretary. Later, after the kids were born and had 

grown up she worked for the Midland Ind School District as a Library Assistant. This was where she was 

working until they moved to Orange, Texas, in 1995. 

Notes for Bobby Gene Reddin: 

Bob grew up in Loraine, Mitchell Co., Texas. He graduated from Loraine High School in Loraine. He was 

involved in Basketball, Tennis and Baseball while in high school. This is where he met Joyce. 

After high school Bob moved to Midland, Texas. 

Bob worked for The Western Co. from May 1955 to June 1959 in Midland, Texas. His job took him to Ft. Worth 

in June of 1959, and they lived there until Dec. 1978 when the moved back to Midland, Texas. During the time 

they lived in Ft. Worth, Bob worked for The Western Co. and after leaving The Western Co. worked for 

Centeco, Inc.

While back in Midland, Bob had an insurance agency, Myers-Reddin Agency, and worked there and with Grand 

Banks Energy until Jan 1995, when the moved to Orange, Texas, where he worked for E.W. Brown, Jr.

Notes for Raymond Earl Coldewey: 

Raymond was born in Scurry County, in a small community called China Grove. China Grove was located south, 

southeast of Snyder. When he was four years old the family moved to a farm 6 1/2 miles north of Loraine, Texas 

in Mitchell County. This is where he lived until he graduated from Loraine High School in May 1957. 

During Raymond's school years he was active in basketball and tennis. Raymond was also active in the band 

from the 6th grade until he graduated. For 2 years he was the Drum Major of the Marching band. He was part of 

the Junior Play and the Senior Play. These were activities that his class did to help raise money for their Senior 

trip. 

Raymond moved to Midland after graduation from high school and lived with his brother, while trying to find a 

job. His first job was with an auto parts company, Eubanks Auto Parts. He also worked a short time for a 

plumbing and air conditioning company as a plumbers helper. Finding it difficult to get ahead and find a job he 

liked in Midland, Raymond moved back to Loraine and helped his dad on farm. He also got a job with the Texas 

Highway Dept on a survey crew. He did this for about a year, and then decided he would try college on his own. 

Taking the money he had saved, he enrolled in Howard County Jr. College for the fall term of 1958. His money 

lasted only about 6 weeks, having lots of fun and not saving his money or finding a part time job, Raymond had to 

go back to work. He moved back to Midland where he got a job with Southwestern Bell on January 19, 1959. 

This is where he met his wife, Fern. She was working for Shell Oil Company in Midland. They married, 

November 24, 1960 at the First Baptist Church in Midland, Texas. They lived in Midland until Raymond joined 

the Air Force in October 1961. As it turned out, Raymond & Fern spent 37 weeks in Wichita Falls, Texas, while 

Raymond was learning how to repair teletype machines. Other training he received in the Air Force, was Cable 

Splicing, working on Atlas Missile systems cable to the various missile silos around Altus, Oklahoma. Dianne 

was born while they were in Altus, Oklahoma. 

After being discharged from the Air Force in 1965, Raymond went back to work for Southwestern Bell, in 

Abilene, Texas. Cynthia was born in Abilene. While in Abilene, Raymond pursued his desire of going to college 

and begin going to night school. They lived in Abilene, until they moved to Austin, Texas. 

In Austin, Raymond continued to going to college at night, while working during the day. Up to this point 

Raymond had worked in the Sales/Marketing Dept of Southwestern Bell. One of the things he liked best while in 

Austin, was working on the State of Texas Telecommunications. During the legislative sessions he and his team 

worked in the State Capital Building, taking care of the State's Telephone requirements. 

In 1979, Raymond's job took them to San Antonio, Texas, where he worked in the assessment of new hires for the

Marketing Dept. After two years of this, he went back to the Marketing Dept. In 1983, Raymond was selected 

as one of the employees to go to American Bell even though he had wanted to stay with Southwestern Bell. This 

was the breakup of AT&T and the Bell Systems. Raymond continued to work in Marketing until 1989, when he 

got a job in the Network Services Dept. He continued to work in this area until 1993, when the took a job 

working with International services, providing satellite and cable private line service to the Latin America 

Countries 

Raymond retired in June 1998 from AT&T and he and Fern are living in San Antonio, Texas. Raymond stays 

active working as an Usher at the AT&T Center (where the SA Spurs play), playing tennis and working around 

the house 

Notes for Ola Fern Roberts: 

Ola Fern Roberts was born November 18, 1940, Monday at 1:40 A.M. at Grandmother Teaff's, Post, Texas. Her 

weight was 7 1/4 lbs. 

Fern grew up in many places, but finished high school in Abilene, Texas. She completed high school at Abilene 

High School. 

Her dad worked in the insurance business, and they lived in many places while she was growing up. 

After the girls grew up, Fern went to college and earned her Associate Degree in Nursing, becoming an LVN.

I was born in Midland, TX on September 19, 1956. I spent my whole childhood in Midland. When I was about 4 

years old, my family moved to the country south of Midland. My brother and I had a lot of fun growing up there. 

We learned many things and had free access to many acres of land to explore. We grew up going to the Church 

of Christ. I learned to sing in the church and found that I had some ability in this area. 

I attended Midland High School where I was most active in the choir program there. Music became my main 

interest in high school. I made the region choir 3 years and the Texas All-State Choir twice. 

After high school, I went to Eastern New Mexico University and majored in music education. I graduated in 

1979. I began working that fall in Monahan s, Texas in the choir program there. I worked in Monahan s up to the 

present (1997) except for the two years that I sold life insurance for The Franklin. This adventure taught me that 

teaching music was where I should be. My attitude about teaching has been healthy ever since. 

I met my wife, Joyce, in 1982. We dated 3 years before getting married on August 10, 1985. It's the best thing I 

have ever done. We went to San Antonio on our honeymoon and took another honeymoon to Disney World in 

the spring 1986.

I enjoy hunting and just shooting in general. I enjoy reloading the ammunition I shoot. I read a lot. I also enjoy
