Anna's Father was married three times. She had two older half sisters and one sister, Mrs. Meta Lange Wessels
(Herman Wessel) who also came to America in 1887...settling at Witting and later at Runge, Texas. Anna's dear
dear Mother died in 1866 (Mrs. Lange in Germany). Anna was 15 then and left home to work for others when
her mother had been dead one year. Her father remarried after one year.
Anna worked for the same family 9 years, until she married Heinrich. She worked from early morning till late
at night...had to milk 10 or 12 cows, raise a garden, spin wool and Flax. She could spin enough yarn to make 12
yards of material in 1 day for a dress. She also made the school dresses. She walked 5 miles to town to market
butter, eggs, and berries..then brought back the money in silver. She received $.25 cents for a trip to town. Her
yearly wages were $28.00, 18 yards of line and material for one dress and a pair of shoes.
Anna and Heinrich had 3 sons, Hermann, George and Dietrich. George died in Germany at the age of 6 months
shortly before they left for America. Also there daughters, Mathilda, Martha, and Anna. Anna's mother did
practical nursing and served as midwife on many occasions. She even delivered her last two babies herself when
help did not come in time. In relating the events in connection with the births of her babies she said she was not
worried. She just sat in a big rocking chair near a table where all necessary articles and equipment had been
placed ahead of time. By the time her husband and help arrived, the baby was bathed and wrapped in a warm
spun blanket.
