IZWQ U_VW1--Fostex D-20A technical report by Sam Wise on a new DAT cassetteplayer with professional level facilitiesThe Fostex D -20 is the first DAT machineto provide the features that professionaltape machine users have beenaccustomed to, including SMPTEtimecode, varispeed, playback off tape whilerecording and drop -in (punch in) capability.First impressionsAt first glance, the D -20 gives the appearance ofone of the top line Revox or Studer table -topproducts, such as their CD or cassette players.Surely this must be intentional, giving the D -20 aManufacturer's specificationRecord replay characteristics and encodingto DAT standardsQuantisation: 16 bit linearDynamic Range: >90 dB (emphasis on, 1 kHz)Frequency Response: 20 Hz to 20 kHzTotal Harmonic Distortion: 80 dB (20 Hz to 20 kHz)Emphasis: switchableInput/OutputLine in: XLR x 2. The livery is inshades of beige and grey, with red and green LEDindicators and a fluorescent -type meter and tapetime indicator. The unit has a professional feel toit and is obviously intended to reflect its title ofDigital Master Recorder visually. The unit issupplied as standard with rackmount ears andtakes up three rack units once the rubber feet areremoved.Internally the unit is well made in the typicalJapanese fashion of multiple PCBs interconnectedwith flying leads. The unit is relatively easy todisassemble as later experience was to prove. An IEC power connector is used. InternalTimecode in/out: XLR. Nominal level: +4dBm. Input Imp: 20 kf1. TheUS appears to have a separate model with 110 Voperation. The operating manual received was a photocopied draft but contained adequate informationfor proper machine operation. A full manualshould be available by the time this review ispublished.OperationThe tape cassette is loaded much like a VHSvideo cassette, just shove it in and the transportswallows the cassette and loads it. A warninglight tells you that LOAD is in operation. Theadjacent EJECT button does just that. Basicoperation is not a problem using the standardRECORD. STOP, and PLAY controls. The FFWD andREWIND controls are multi- function. First pushcauses the transport to wind at 5x normal speed.A second push shifts to 100x normal speed.Thereafter the buttons toggle between thesespeeds; very handy with DAT, which tends to golike a rocket when winding. Near the centre ofthe front panel, there is a RECORD READY selectionto be made before the machine can be placed onrecord. There are separate RECORD READY selectorsfor timecode and audio, though the two audiotracks must always be recorded together. To the right of the READY controls are themonitor selectors, which are affected in theirD
